Please don't infract shit, piss, fuck, cunt, damn, ass, tits if they aren't mere offences directed at anyone. Report and we take care of it.
If you got really high political correct moral standards blattering, go to church. These aren't the bible boards.

From: Rules & Regulations

  • Inappropriate language:
  • Inappropriate language, including swearing or cussing, of any kind is prohibited, except in and only in the BBQ Pit section. Directly swearing or cussing at another member, or insulting another member is prohibited on ALL boards. If this rule is broken, we, the staff, have the right to issue an infraction at our discretion.

Just sayin'.

So that would be an infraction sir.

This thread will only stir things up and create unrest between our members, you do realise..?

YoHoJo

2012-03-04 07:59:54

How will it do that?

By going against the rules set out earlier today/edited rules?

I think we should all still discuss and vote more about the cursing rules an what should be tolerated.

BraK

2012-03-04 08:01:00

So your saying we are getting rid of offensive language and just going to use the Insult other members infraction instead? If it's directed at someone it would then be a different infraction so we should just get rid of that infraction entirely? That's my questions.

YoHoJo

2012-03-04 08:04:20

YoHoJo i think it should be allowed, just don't aim at it anyone, and use it with discretion

How is this even up for discussion? I think we are intelligent enough to have discretion between when offensive language is directed at a user and intended to be offensive or when that type of language is just generally used in the content of a message.

As RM said, staff should issue infractions at their own discretion. If you can't trust them to do such then why are they staff?

This is the internet. Don't forget that.

Indeed, this is a completely pointless topic and I think Markus is actually being offensive by implying we're not intelligent enough to decide what is offensive and what isn't.

SSRL does not have a view on reported posts. I saw quite a few reported posts, discussion was like "hmm ok nothing should happen" then someone from here gives an infraction. Completely over our heads. Ofc they can't do anything about it. That's why I made this thread. I'm not trying to imply you guys can't make intelligent decissions.

So, perhaps SSRL shouldn't have the ability to infract without also knowing if the post has already been reported / discussed? It doesn't seem appropriate to get mad at us for choosing one of our two options when we don't have access to the rest of the story.

-Bam Bam

Edit: and since when are we the moral police? Either allow swearing or don't. There's no gray area regarding swear words imo. If it's a swear, and swears are against the rules then it should be infractable. Otherwise we shouldn't have the rule at all. Either way, there's no way to determine whether or not a word is going to offend someone. I can offend plently of people without swearing one bit.

In all reality, cussing shouldn't be used in any context. Sure, we all slip up, but that doesn't mean it should be allowed.

I can say: "This game is such a faggot, fuck it!" or "Fuck you, faggot!".

They are BOTH bad, even though one is directed toward someone and one isn't. Although, the one directed toward someone is slightly worse.

You know what's also bad? Cheating in a game lots of people would like to enjoy playing legit, and ruining it for them.

I mean currently our word filter is even stricter than Jagex's?! And we should take a good look at why the rules are there.
All the perm bannable ones are clear. here the infracted ones:
  1. Buying and Selling: Clear one, we don't want anything money-related on SRL. Majority of members agree on this one.
  2. Plagiarism: Also clear, no one would like their script to be plagiarized
  3. Returning During a Suspension: Idem dito
  4. Multiple Accounts: No sock-puppets
  5. Leaking: You got here under the assumption you wouldn't leak.
  6. Spam: It's just annoying
  7. Misbehavior: Lol this thread is misbehaviour
  8. Insulting Other Members: Insults are for lil kids bullying in the school yard. We can do better than that
  9. Backseat Moderating: Very annoying at times
  10. Bumping and Grave Digging: Also very annoying because of irrelevant information getting kicked to the top
  11. "Clicks For Cash" Ads and Referrals: If this one isn't there, everyone is going to put his referral link there
  12. Posting Under the Influence: It's fun, but derails entire conversations
  13. Malicious Intent: Weird name for a rule, but who wants their system32 deleted?
  14. All Caps and Multi-Posting: Makes posts unreadable.
  15. Inappropriate language: If it isn't under any of above rules (insulting other members, malicious intent and whatever), maybe some weird moralty issue?
What's the difference between 1-15 and 16? 1-15 got a majority of the public behind them and never get complained at, everyone understand the reasoning behind them. 16 has always been a debated issue, but mostly debated upon in staff section because staff knows what's good for the rest? Like the public can't think/decide for themselves?
As partly voiced here, there is public resent against it. They don't understand why it's there and honestly I can not explain it to them besides "staff decided so", a fallacy.
I propose a public poll to end the discussion once and for all. A good, non-biased poll.

Since everyone is throwing their hat into the ring…

If people are arguing about their ability to use swear words, then they're just stupid. For some reason, they can't understand that, despite having American Free Speech, they can't say whatever they like without consequence. I'm very confident they don't go around school swearing, yet I doubt - just as much - that they're up in arms about it there. I would very much prefer the majority of the forums to have a school-like atmosphere rather than a playground one.

Also, Markus, that thread is about an inability to find the SRL download button, not swearing.

If you think like that, drinking would be allowed in schools and pirating software would be legal. Or when we would get a flood of horny gentlemen, pornography would be allowed. You must keep in mind what this forum is meant for and who we are trying to reach. So in that point of view, yes, the staff knows what's good for the rest.

What do you need curse words for when helping someone with creating a script or posting your progress report? Although I agree with you that making things too strict will only have a counterproductive effect.

That does not defy my argument. Not drinking in schools, pornography over here, it all has a democratic base (in case of not drinking at schools: my faculties basement has a bar and I bet yours does, too). Also I doubt we are trying to reach 10yo kids. I doubt anyone here would want a lot of pornography.

Of course they aren't necessary, but neither are those infractions. They make us look like machines and people will stop respecting us.

Not drinking in schools might have a democratic base, but the ones who may (not) drink do not get to vote. You say you don't think anyone would want pornography here, but what if there was a democratic majority for it? It doesn't have anything to do with a Runescape cheating related website, so we should not allow it. We do not represent the users, we represent the owner.

When have people respected us? Honestly?

I honestly don't understand why cursing should be allowed. Yes, I have a foul mouth at times, but it's all about control. Cursing does nothing to get your point across, and just looks childish.

The rules as they are now still has gray areas, and people will always try to push their limits no matter what the rules say. Why should we just "give in" to that because people can't/don't follow the rules?

I'm fine with a poll, but I doubt it will make much difference.

The point isn't how old the people who are on this site are. The point is looking different from the rest, and being more mature and professional looking than any other rs cheating site out there, no?

Most people respect most of the staff actually. They know staff is what keeps the forums running and prevent it from turning into complete anarchy. There's not a lot of corruption nor power abuse as is common at a lot of other forums so yes, they are respected. Got quite a few PM's thanking me for handling a certain situation.
I never said cursing should be allowed, but that there should be more leniency when it comes to infractions. It won't hurt; people won't leave for that, but it does save a lot of complaining and irritations. You know what's immature? Infracting for every single possibly cursing word you can find in a post, like you can't handle it. If cops would do the same every time, I bet it would ignite some kind of riot.
Also, I really hate making this analogy, but what's wrong with "giving in"? SRL is not some kind of North-Korea were every kind of giving in would mean an increased chance of a revolution. How would it hurt? Are you afraid of some kind of slippery slope? There are still harsh limits on insulting other members, the rule would still be there for the more outrageous cases but that's something different from allowing cursing all the way.
To conclude on your final point: this isn't a competition. Too much trying to be absolutely mature would cause us to be less mature, because honestly, which adult doesn't curse from time to time? ;)

Ah, you meant "us" as in the staff and not as in the community, gotcha :p

I actually let a lot of stuff slide, including language. I've only handed out a few infractions for it, and only because the post was almost nothing but cursing. Even then I hand out warnings 98% of the time.

Since I've joined the community, cursing has never really been allowed. Why should it be changed now? People will abuse it to no end, you would be fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

Like I said before, everyone slips up. The real issue I think is, we are discussing the gray area of this rule, and it's very broad.

Markus I'm getting the message that you would prefer leniency in infractions involving swearing. I didn't like the way you came across as in we weren't "allowed" to infract for swearing but point taken, I'll consider pm'ing or warning. However in defense (because I have a feeling this thread was brought on by my infracting), I do usually check a user's history for infractions, and am more likely (or not) to infract depending on what I see.

Too much trying to be absolutely mature would cause us to be less mature, because honestly, which adult doesn't curse from time to time?

I think we definitely differ in views here however, as I actually do strive to be the best I can be…all the time. Not saying I succeed, but I do try. And I don't "let it slip" online, it's too easy to just proofread your post before posting (as I do with every post I post). I think Fakawi has made it clear what is and isn't acceptable though.

EDIT: also if this offers any clarity on where I'm coming from, I don't actually ever swear
