New Members

I've seen this a bunch with the newer members who are just popping out of no where, many of them will say the same things about the Members section: "it's not that great", "not much there", "no cool scripts". So then what's the real reason you all were so anxious to apply and gain membership?

Being a member means you're standing for SRL and setting an example for the others. You have access to different techniques and forum discussions not everyone should publicly know about; you're part of a community and helped contribute twords that. Having the rank means you've worked hard to get to where you are. Many people would be proud of this as most people cannot achieve this. When you're given Membership it's there for life, you'll always have a seat at the table, so to speak.

It's really a damn shame that so many of you have next to no respect for the rank at all, you just want in for the scripts. If that's the case, then how are you any different from a normal user of any other bot community? How do you think this impacts the outlook of newer users when you say shit like "yeah, the members section isn't that great"? Do you think they'll even have enough encouragement to keep working twords the rank, or are you really putting them down with nothing to look forward to?

I sure feel ashamed that the rank itself has degraded so much in meaning.

I agree, Flight, as we've discussed over PM before. Thank you for posting this.

The way I see it, there's no point in trying to become a SRL member just for the scripts; Because if you can get the rank, it means you could probably make most of the scripts available in the members only section.

The rank is totally worth it because it proves you are skilled at scripting, in my opinion people should get members for the honor of being one rather than for the scripts. Scripts are available as a convinience, not as a right and should never be the main reason for which to apply for membership.

I like honors and titles. I maxed my runescape account not because I wanted to but for the ranks on the runescape highscores. Ranks are things I enjoy and appreciate in others and I think they are worth way more than other things. It is definitely a shame people are trying to get members for the wrong reasons. I personally only tried using one memberscript and it didn't work because it is outdated, I enjoy scripting and I know practice makes perfect, so if I ever come to need a script, I make it myself not only because it makes me a better scripter but because I feel accomplished once I finish it and it works. That feeling of accomplishment is what every scripter should look foward to in my opinion.

^.^~ Ranks and self-realization above all!

EDIT:

To be honest, I vote yes on all applications that have a script made in Simba regardless of how good or bad the script actually is because I know just how much even a little of positive feedback means for new users. If the script is not members worth it, I can count on the other 15 people that always vote no to shift the balance the other way. I just think that 1 vs 10 is way more encouraging than 0 vs 11. There are a few that vote no on apps just for voting no without even looking at what is being posted(Ex. the script) and that treat the applying members in a rude manner. The whole point of posting in a members application is to give back constructive feedback, not to end up discouraging them from applying ever again. There is no reason why someone who at least bothered to apply with a script should be treated the same as those who apply without a script.

I think being positive helps build up a better community spirit.

I joined this community just a month ago! I love the leaders and all the helpful people that have done good to make this what it is. I made 2 scripts already! One was a hunter kit opener before S1n came out with his! And a clay miner and softener! Neither are quite ready to be even seen by anyone because it will probably burn your eyes! But hey they work, I've been looking forward to becoming a member but not for the members scripts but because of the respect and meaning it has. It truly is a shame that some people only work towards a goal if the reward is something they can selfishly abuse.

I think they are ready to be seen by public eyes, I suggest to post them and be proud of what you have accomplished. Nothing is so important to a scripter as the feedback on his/her first script. Don't think because the methods aren't that advanced as other scripts that your script should stay private. I would like to see it. My eyes can't be burned, they will probably melt by the sexiness of someones first script.

Because the high standards we require of someones members application doesn't mean we require the same of someones first script. There aren't much, if any, reasons to keep a first script private. How can we improve someones standards when we don't see there scripts.

We, SRL members+, aren't elite members that were born with a gift and most of us had the same start as you have. I love giving feedback, I love to see someone progress. I've taught people in various other languages, but the special thing about simba and the pascal script language, is that I can learn from it too. Improving is all that maters, I don't even have a rs account at the moment. Just start as much project as you're capable of.

But I don't agree with the main post. I'm one of the SRL members that says that becoming a SRL member is not that great. It shouldn't be your goal to gain access to the srl member section. And if you gained access to this section with rs gold as only motivation, than it isn't that great. We don't got that many special script. We don't got that many privileges above other users. And we don't got that many special features that you don't have. We are community focused on teaching new curious users how to make a basic script, and give them a reason to create there first computer 'program'.

Being an SRL member means you have a bit more than the basic understanding of simba and more important is that we can trust you. I try to test this and give my opinion in every serious SRL members application. I may seem like an hard voter, but I just want to see as many aspirant programmers develop in fully capable programmers. Use simba and the pascal language as the first step up, and explore the world of programming. Become the next Bill gates or mark zuckerberg.

Learn as much as you can. Write as much as you can. Ask everything. Then become an respected SRL member.

I am drunk, but the right kind of drunk.

Personally, I haven't seen many of these things that you speak of, Flight. I have yet to run into a Member stating that, 'there aren't that many cool scripts' and such. I do agree that ever since the bot nuke, that the Member status, or stature let's call it has changed immensely.

When I look at myself and other fellow Members, and Senior Members, all I can think of is how much I actually respect all of you. We're all here as a team, all trying to learn and further our knowledge in the programming realm, or some of us are in it to help others just because we enjoy helping others.

Now, for those of you newer members who actually said what Flight claimed in his first post, you should be ashamed of yourselves. This place is not for gold-farming, nor should it be used for personal gain. If you want to focus on that, then please do yourselves a favour and just leave… of course without harming the work that others have put towards their scripts.

I just want to say to Flight that it's "towards" not twords. I agree with Sin btw, it's nice when people don't call your work garbage, like some people in my application called mine.

Well, Flight. I don't know who piss you off to Think about this, but I am a New Comer and I didn't even think about behind a Member would give me Access to better Script!

I didn't even Read the Forum about How a member Should be That I already understood how this community was about friendship and helping Each other becoming Better Scripters. If some people did manage to become Awesome Scripter just to get access to a rumour saying Member has better script, They are Really ……. Because, since he has the skills to make awesome Script, He should be able to make them himself and Not depend on someone else to Script What he wants!

When I see a Member, I know it is a person that Worked Hard to be where he is, since there is a lot of things to learn before behind able to make effective scripts. Also, it means it is someone that participate in the community and as the willing to learn and Help each other.

As my point of View, Gaining the Member title Mean you are recognize by the community as someone useful and that you have prove that you merit a place in this community .

I agree, it is sad the way that some people see the rank of SRL member. The seem to want to get in really badly (to the point of offering to buy accounts on forums like RiD) as for some reason they believe that the holy grail of scripts is just hiding behind the Members Section of the forums.

One possible way of making SRL Members rank what it is meant to be (something that represents the person dedication to the community and their outstanding ability to script) would be to release an SRL Junior Members section (like we used to have) and allow scripts that are withheld from the public forums due to over-leeching to be posted there, it would make a lot of people less interested in getting Members simply for the scripts (obviously there would still be some scripts in the members section).

Just my thoughts :)

Oh so that one person is you, I always wondered who did that.

Anyway back on topic. SRL members rank is a community rank and will ALWAYS remain a community rank we serve the community. What you will find in the srl members section is not some miracle scripts and crazy black market with everything you have ever desired for dirt cheap instead you will find mature conversations about THIS community and how it functions. You will find topics on improvements, things that may of sparked our interest.

Applying just for scripts is useless, trust me. You should apply to help the community which we serve, become a true valuable asset to the community.

I personally think most posts that say 'well members isn't that great' is in reference to the scripts and people say that to discourage leachers trying to get in only for scripts. I suppose maybe more of this talk is in the actual members section?

I have to say thank you for doing this. I'm glad someone is there to help make the application process not so demeaning. It's really rough to see 10 v 0 on something you worked hard on even if it isn't superior. It's even worse when only one or two people give any feedback. Do people even run the scripts or just read them? Eh I guess a few feelings left over but I'll keep learning until I can write a superior script.

I always say that being a Member is MORE than just the scripts that are in there. Becoming a Member is about the respect of learning how to script and standing out from the pack. So, when I see someone ask about becoming Member for the scripts, it saddens me. Years ago, when I got Membership, it meant a lot more than it did today.

I have to agree with masterBB. I am one of those newer members who think that members privileges other than the rank aren't really great. My argument is that by the time you are able to earn the rank from fellow members, you can make most things you need. I must admit that I very much appreciate the member privileges, e.g. access to black market, goodies and the amazing work by others members/SSRL+, but I consider what I am able to achieve as more meaningful to myself than the tangibles.

To illustrate futher, why are we getting so many appliances that have no scripts/ newcomers that have registered for like <3 weeks? I'm sure the most powerful incentive here is the *promised* members script section the people think we're stashing our goodies in. I just think that for most of the time, wrong incentives drove people to rush for the rank.

I might have phrased my point in a bad way to other members of the community, but I am aware of what the rank means to a scripter and myself. Still, I think there's nothing wrong to think that the actual privileges are not as great compared to what you have achieved by earning the rank. It's only a matter of whether you value the intangibles more than the tangibles.

As for the reason, I just wanted to see if I was members-worthy within 8 weeks of learning and scripting. It was a challenge to prove myself - I am sure there are others among us who got in within 6 weeks.

That's who I was focusing on. I wish I had made a bookmark or something of each thread I've found where a new Member degrades the value of the scripts in the Members section. It would be nice if I had examples to show…

Ah thank you, I've been saying twords for a loooong time, just out of habit I suppose. I'll make a mental note.

Yes there's no reason to down someone's work. For those who really take Membership seriously they'll be very focused to what the Members will write in response to their applications. Who would really want their script called garbage when they worked so hard to make something presentable as an application? There's no need for this, if anything they should give helpful suggestions and atleast point the applicants in the right direction.

There are tons of great and powerful scripts in the members section. The requirements to get into members might be steep but by the time most get to be members they then have the ability to write most any scripts they want. That is where the real value comes from in my eyes. You are no longer asking others "Hey, can you make me this script". First thought should be "Hey, let me see if I can make this script as it's got an epic method." There are great scripts in the section but most are SRL3 and SRL4 and need updating. Some very powerful scripts from higher ups way back when SRL started are probably still floating around still in working condition just needing the colors and SRL procs Updated. Point is nothing is without value.
