I think color based bots CAN be stopped.

Note; This is my opinion and of course you are welcome to disagree as you know much more about this bot than I ever will.. PS. Read the whole post before replying.

So.. I think Jagex can stop color bots in their current form. Simply make RS change colors (slightly, but still) every now and then. If there is a way around that (with color only), please do inform me.

Then we'd have to move towards shape..but if they even change shape every now and then what could we possibly do? =/ (For example like this; Mining; Rocks would change shape and color every 10 minutes)

I guess you could make the client memorize where exactly to click (as in, playing rs blind) but jagex could just randomly change the camera angle.. unless we always click the compass. Hmmh.. Then Jagex removes that ability from the compass…..

Meh. I think Jagex could stop botting, but it requires a lot of effort.

(I have posted this elsewhere, but got no replies, so I though I'd add it here)

Nope, this'll affect legit players WAYYY too muchh.

Tolerance. :) Jagex already changes the colors every time the client loads or reloads.
Changing objects can also be combated easily.
Jagex already changes the compass angle randomly. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying.

Really? Why? I mean lets say an ore changes its shape and color randomly, but still looks like an ore, just different.

Well I guess, but can you imagine how awful it would be for the legit community playing a game that jumps around, has weird changing colours and shape morphing rocks (yes it would have to be a noticeable change for it to escape our bots)…
All in the name of stopping something that is actually the backbone of the rs economy? Think about it, if every bot was shut down, first jagex would be losing a lot of sub money and secondly the prices of raw, gather-able materials would shoot through up.

I really think it's a combination of the fact that making extreme patches would put off legit players and acceptance that the bots do actually help in some way, that is keeping Jagex from trying to shut them all down.

Then color bots can also detect the ore. It's just a little harder. And yeah they already change colors, angle and shape(inventory objects).

Jagex does change colors? <.< I must ask how do you get around this? And they even change the compass angle? D: I had no idea.

And changing objects could as well be handled? How? I mean if the look would be different each time?

Maybe that is true.. it depends on how much does need to be changed for the bots to be confused.

The object would have to change in a major way to escape tolerance and the compass part is easily beaten by something like
  MakeCompass('s');
SetAngle(0);

If the shape was changing every so often then we would just make bots look for key colours, not entire shapes. Which many do at the moment anyway.

They already do, and have done for a long time. That is why we use "tolerance" and inventing the term, "Auto colour".

This could be easily circumvented as-well, by using another form of tolerance. e.g. DTM's AreaSize property is a perfect example :)

Back in 2003-2005 we used to do that. However, that practice has long since been abandoned since it is way too unreliable and has a high potential of getting the user banned.

but jagex could just randomly change the camera angle..

They currently do.

unless we always click the compass.

We sometimes do this too (mainly when we need to walk, etc)
From: NotReligious

They'd have quite a list of angry complaints from legitimate users too :p It is often used, even by legit players.

A very informative post, thanks!

jagex already does most of the stuff referred by you and they all fail :) it has been said quite sometimes that the only way they could definitly stop color bots were to have runescape black and white :D which would be awesome :p

Hmm…Then take a look at this scenario:

You're soloing nex and it's about to die. Then the camera angle changes and you'll lose all your stuff…

Actually, black and white wouldn't stop us at all :p We can do shapes remember? Actually, we could even do %of black to white in a defined area to find an object, which would be fun :p

forgot about the shapes :duh: should be fun playing rs in black and white, they are always trying new methods (litle things) to stop color bots but they always end up failing

their problem is that they are reactive, they react to new methods implemented by botters, we are pro active, always trying to have the upper hand and being 1 step ahead

We don't have to use shape (DTM/BMP) :)

We can set/read compass for RS_CompassAngleDegrees. Its very possible for some one to make a script that has walking and also make it work with any compass angles :)

If Runescape were to stay as a browser game, the only way they could succeed in breaking color bots is if they were to destroy the laws of physics + math.

they do this now with the 'glitches' dtms still work perfectly, tolerance <3

I dont think Jagex can stop colour botting and really i dont think they care to much at all. Not saying you wont get banned for 24/7'ing a sw bot till ur 120cb but they see its not as easy as epicbot or rsbuddy to just throw scripts into the client. However Optimus is causing alot of craze but then again we will see. Colour forever!

They are probably still getting about 1000 people using color bots to gold farm.
thats another 8000 per month gfed.

The Object DTM Include has had rotated-compass support from day 1, but since the functions for grabbing the compass angle have decreased in accuracy, the rotation has been iffy. As for using DTMs for walking, one could easily read the compass angle to modify parameters passed to FindDTMRotated in order to implement rotation support.

Even if it can be stopped, I hope it does not happen.
I think botting will always be around, reguarless.

Oh, I meant with just atpa and maybe little bit of math:)

The thing is can you imagine how many bugs would be involved in this? Jagex always stuffs up something with an update that allows bugs or glitches (take for instance the money pouch a simple update, yet somehow Jagex found a way to f it up).
This would be a major overhaul, objects in runescape would be mega glitchy especially if the colors were random along with the shape.. Its not going to happen not to mention how many players would quit if an ogre looked like an actual ogre but 10 minutes later it turned into a white pancake..

They constantly change graphics, they'll probably piss off bots for 1-2 days but it'll be all good.
How about making Ivy's invisible!!!! owait… they already tried that.

Zaros

2012-02-22 00:51:41

Yeah, they already do most of that stuff. What I'm wondering is if that change from the yellow/red click icon was also to fight off color too… That pisses me off as when I play legit…

User input is another area they probably focus on.
