Okay. So I did a HUGE redesign of the proposed landing page. The current (not yet implemented one) was too muddled and messy. So we brain stormed ideas and this is what I mocked up today.

This represents the simplistic feel we are going for and roughly how we want it to look. I just suck at making images so if you could please have a go, that'd be great :)

Points:
-SRL Logo "mounted" to the back like that in a rough solid kinda look
-3 Buttons
—1 with SRL Cog
—1 with Simba Logo
—1 with some form of representation for forums
Will also need roll over versions for these buttons
And feel free to make your own interpretations. Like if you want to do a depressed outline of the cog, simba head, w/e into the button, or outlines or w/e. Play around with it.

Also open to slight background suggestions, but want to keep it this kind of style.

Overall look, please keep it a matte sort of finish and not shiny.

Its really handy cause you can access your contacts and everything iCloud related on your devices from un-iCloud enabled placed (like a linux laptop). :)

Yes Hobbit, I just tried and was pretty helpfull :)
And also the app 'FindMyiPhone' is really great! Using it on pcm it's very cool!
But I'm having some problems, because some data doesn't appear on the iCloud. But I'll take a deeper look. Thanks again for showing it. Without any more stuff to say, let's return to the topic.

I think that we should take inspiration from other good software sites rather than having a fairly uninformative landing page that links to three different sites. I think that a little text could go a long way towards being more informative. IMO, there should be a download link, that directly starts a download, and can redirect or something to wizzup's site, because that looks fairly informative. The forums link is fine, but unless srl isnt autobundled with simba (which i thought it was), then i don't see much point in it.

Im not saying that it needs to be as wordy as it was during the first round, but i personally find that the first round ones look more professional, and are all around more useful. (i also liked the color coded text buttons better)

I decided to try somethinn.

Here are some examples. They are clean, simple, to the point and have little words.

Reminds me the Oscars aha that gold plate, and those red curtains.
I think that, if it were a greyish ( like aluminum, instead of gold ), it would good :) ( personal opinion )

I agree with Bebe that the SRL mission statement should be included on the landing page.

I like it, but I think the title and buttons should be smaller, much smaller. My girlfriend also think you should have Simba's face in the button instead of just the outline.

I also really like the idea of having a catchy slogan, but I don't think a lot of text should be on the page. I think a nice combination of both can be made.

I like Zills, and maybe when you hover the buttons, they change.
Like Simba outline will turn into picture of his face etc etc.
I say Zills with some tweaks and whatnot.

Like i said, not a lot of text is necessary, but from the point of view of someone without any experience, it would be more helpful to have some text to give real descriptions of what those links do, and what the website is actually for. I dont think a slogan alone would do it.

I agree with you.

The download button should start an actual download of the Simba installer (maybe we can make an installer that already has the necessary extensions enabled), the forum to the forums, obviously (maybe link to an Introduction thread?), and the SRL Repository button probably doesn't need to be there, but I think it would be nice if it was renamed like "SRL Source" to be more defined as I'm sure there are some people that would like to see the source.

IRC is mostly trolls, bad stuff, etc I don't think I'd want brand new users to be seeing what goes on in the IRC channel.

I would agree with DL page, FAQ, Forums, and Source if you definately want it. I would put a link to the irc idea in the FAQ though not on the main page (then you would have people getting on IRC to ask questions without any reading of the actual help pages)

I would say DL page (and i don't see why it Wizzup would be against it opening up a download.) Until there is mutiple os support, where you would need different files for different os's (and even then the browser is able to tell the difference, so it could automatically open a dl OS specifically) then there really is only one DL that new people would want. I think being linked to the DL page itself would make a weird path thing.

EDIT: i lied. all the simba stuff is on one page, i thought it was more separate. No i guess it would be fine if it didnt start a download, though I don't see the problem with it, since they're clicking a button that they will expect to start a download for them.

For the FAQ if it happens, The "what is Simba" part of wizzup's site, i think would be a very good first question.

i would think that a separate FAQ page would be a good substitute to having a fair amount of text on the front page. I would see it as a worthy replacement of the source button, if you decided not to have one, or even worth adding a fourth button for it.

I think you should make the landing page as clean as possible then have a Faq page link with all the messy information.

That's really cool. I'm not sure how much I like the title and other text, though. Seems kind of plain and "less awesome" than the rotating links (no offense). :p

I really really like that. I would have the main picture link to the forums, or have something link directly to the forums, but honestly, other than that, its by far the best one I've seen

For the images, I think either to forward image is too big, or the behind images need to stick out more. At first glance they just look like some sort of strange back drop. Also maybe add some drop shadows? :)

I used a jQuery control for the images, I'll play around with it later and see what I can do :)

Oh woah, yea you already have a link to the forums. I totally didnt realise that you could rotate the links. I would definately have the forums one as the front link then. Even fancier!

One other one for Simba, they are all kind of the same theme.

I love the search button idea. I think it should be added to the landing page as a quick reference to the Simba manual, so that when you press it, something pops up that allows you to type in a search query.

Kyles draft is really cool. I suggest we work out from that with the entries from now on… Different images/fonts/colors.

I did a mockup for MSI. Not sure if it's even something you want on the home page or not. I also couldn't decide what style to use with it… So here are several.


Also someone just pointed out that Simba has a white patch between his legs. Here is a fix for that:

I just have the logo that I kind of fished out of the original logo contest that was in this forum. My version is about the same size. I could never figure out what size/style it was to make my own.

Tracked it down, it was Dervish who made it. But the image he posted is the one we all have. I PM'd him to see if he still has PSD of it.

I really like it now, but the MSI phoenix stands out way too much…

One thing that I noticed, is that if the forum and MSI images were brought above the diagonal lines, it would a lot sharper. Just like the Simba image.

I updated the landing page with the PSD image that Hobbit sent me, however, there's not much I can do since I don't have the font files or anything. Take a look now, it doesn't look too bad, just wish it was bigger.

I gave some alternatives that were avail under my license and this is the one they voted on. All 1 color, no shadows or other crap, should be fairly easy to modify, change colors, etc. If you want :)

@Silent: Make sure you space out (align) the text over the picture. The word SIMBA for instance, is way to far up in relation to the other pictures. Also, keep everywhere little safety marging by resizing the picture just a little, this will give rest to the eye and looks professional. Love it!

This is my fault. Hobbit was asking me for some files to get it finished and I never got them to him. Word from Coh3n is that Wizzup? wanted to wait until Simba and SRL was working. I've packaged up the files for them, so they have everything :)

Issue 1: Kyle's landing page is unfinished. Still havent gotten the altered images (Look back)
Issue 2a: I dont think anyone has the files anymore

Issue 1: All the images are up to date.
Issue 2a: I don't have the graphic PSD's anymore, @Silent Spy; might have them, but I'm not sure.

The images aren't :p Half of the tiles have the focus image (ie: cogs, simba) behind the gradient, the other half are in front. And the drop shadow for the text in all the images come from a different point of view :p I did mean for it to sound like you left it unfinished, it's the images that are still not refined yet :p
I sent the code to Coh3n before leaving in April so he could keep Wizzup on top of it…. lol. I dont have the zip file anymore.

I'm pretty sure I emailed them to Wizzup? and reminded him a couple times. But you know Wizzup?. :p

Honestly, I like how it is now. It's clean, simple, and fits with the forum theme.

Not my fault I can't do graphics xD I agree with Coh3n. Even though I'd love to see this one used, the current one fits the Metro theme.

I would honestly rather see a new forum theme (not too thrilled about bright blue squares) to match kyle's, not that I have any idea how much work that would be or expect anyone to do it. It would just look the best, and be the cooliest.
