I think that method wants me so Sync with itunes I don't want to sync anything with itunes.
I just want to install the thing, without having to go though itunes at all, if that's possible.

METHOD 2 : SSH method aka direct method.
This is a little bit more complicated, but you will need to learn how to do this stuff sometime.
1) Download the cracked game/app and extract the AppName.app folder to your desktop or what ever your comfortable with. Make sure its easy to find.
2) Copy AppName.app into /Applications via SSH and set it’s permissions to 0755 (chmod 0755 AppName.app ).
3) Create a folder called Documents in /var/mobile/ and set permissions to 0777. (only needs to be done once).
4) Reboot your device.
NOTE : just to make sure AppName.app = the name of the app or game you just downloaded and you want to install it into your device.
if i remember it right it's possible to open you iphone directory with totalcommander

I know what I must do is called SShing, but all the guides I find are many years old and I'd like to make sure what I'm following is still current/relevant!

SSH is years old and hasn't really changed much :p.
Download something like WinSCP and then follow his directions. To connect to your iDevice enter the IP of your iDevice (you can find it in settings somewhere) and the password, if I remember correctly, is "alpine".

I downloaded Gigs of games off Piratebay and they were all for IOS 4.31 and i have IOS 5.01 D:
But yeah you have to sync it, it's best if you have 2 apple id's, just incase. You can't just install it, tried..doesn't work.
best results imo? downgrade to IOS 4.31 (or well IOS 4..) and yeah it'll be better

Easiest way is to download DiskAid (search it up!), it lets you access you iphone folders.
Put your .ipa app into your installous download folder, disconnect, and then just go to installous, downloads, click your app, should install.
No need to ssh.
That or you could download the file straight to your iphone, get a file manager from cydia, and move it to installous downloads.

What ios version do you have and why dont you want to sync? Theres a tweak called appsync which works great. With appsync you can still use installous but also download free apps from the app store. If things are crashing right after touching them to launch it, you have to activate your itunes that your idevice is connected to. If apps still crash after that then deactivate then reactivate your itunes. If apps still crash, it might just be your device(maybe an older generation). I recently got an ipho e four and spent like 2 hours getting gta3 from installous, its amazing. An exact pc port. Its crazy to think phones today can produce graphics like the ps2. Im on the second island with 50 hidden packages(maps used).
To transfer over files you can download OpenSSH on your idevice, make sure its on then use a program such as WinSCP to get into the files. Im pretty sure the default info is root/alpine if i remember correctly(user/pass). Good luck.
