In my opinion for the past 3 years, we as a community all suffered. We lost a great amount of users and forum activity until recently.
1. The removal of the wilderness and free trade sucked life right out of SRL. It was such a sad era.
2. Rsbot/iBot/Rsbuddy all began to dominate and what was once the best macro around (SCAR/SRL), turned into a bottom dweller.
3. Reflection became dominant, and color became even more worthless. As a community we all embraced this method of macroing, incorporating it into our scripts and we even created our own section.
4. SCAR and SRL split. I didn't like it, many didn't like it, but it had to be done. Face it, say Jagex updated and messed up the OCR in SCAR, we would then have to wait on Freddy to update. Sometimes it would take him a day, sometimes it would take him a week, and sometimes more than a month. I don't blame him, he's human, and he can't do it all himself.
So our own special users of this forum made a new macro called Simba. Everyone who wanted to, could contribute to this project, and progress and further efficient development could happen at a much faster rate. As of today I firmly believe that Simba has become much more advanced than Scar because it's maintained by a community… Which leads me to my original question:
Shouldn't we become private? What's stopping a person with the capabilities to create a macro from ripping apart our own functions/plugins that we spent so much time developing and using them for his/her own benefit?
Those current leachers that are now flocking to us, haven't they gotten enough from Rsbot/iBot/Rsbuddy. They now all have 99 stats and billions of gp, so why should we feed them even more?
I love being an open community, and I love being open-source, but I hate being taken advantage of.
Tl;dr: To bad you have to read the whole thing.

I kind of agree with this, but i'm not one to talk since i'm one of those "leechers" who flocked here.

No.
This community was not founded on being private, it's main principal is being Open to all. Yes, there will always be those around to take advantage of ANY open-source program, but if we became what we loathed everything anyone ever did would become worthless. Many frown upon other communities for the sake they are not open-source.
I don't really feel like typing up a speech, but I know many would never want to see SRL become private.

I just don't like the fact that we let others who have done nothing take what all our hard working members worked for.

In what way ;D

we are a community, inlight that he/she ever does use our functions and stuff, they can't become any better then us. only the same, even then it would be hard to keep up with this community. the only way i can see around this is changing the copyright?

Exactly, before srl-forums.com if I remember correctly.
Don't want it be private. But we might want to implement a system to get better control of the leechers. Personally I liked the old way with junior members scripts more.

I wouldn't say private, but a way to funnel and control the mass would be better. Say, bringing JR Member section back :)

I support this.
We should have 4 Tiers.
Leechers -
Little to no post count, little to no coding knowledge.
SRL Junior Member -
small amount of scripting knowledge
SRL Member -
Us.
SSRL Member -
Godz.

Why on earth would we go private?? We are a learning community, not a RS gold farming site with super top secret scripts that make us billionaires. Leechers are just a small road bump in the path of learning.

A lot of members don't bot, they just use scripts (or rather study them) for the sake of learning. It's a hobby, no one asks for money, and every script that's released is given knowing it will be leeched the hell out of. As for people ripping stuff out of simba, what can they do really? Everything they could do can be gotten free here, and it wouldn't be worth the time anyway.

This also brings to mind, do we advertise enough?
The last thing I would want is someone stealing everything then saying we are the ones who stole from them, and with a bigger community base they can force feed them anything and they will believe it even if we have substantial proof.

I agree with Sin on the tiers, and scripts would be nested within each tier based upon their complexity and reliability. Otherwise the only solutions would be making SRL a closed community or providing a way to release closed source scripts, and both of those ideas are controversial.

I think that of recent, the general aim of the community has changed…. When I became a member(last year during trade restrictions), I felt that everyone just wanted to learn and nobody cared about profit. This became my hobby, and I love it for just that, a hobby and mind exercises.
I think we should forget about all this dam talk of profit, why should so many fights be sparked over dam pixels. Pardon my language, but since when are so many people THAT materialistic.

That's precisely why I don't hang around this website that much anymore, it was a lot more enjoyable when people did it for the love of algorithms and good code rather than pixel wealth.

We are a learning community yes, but we originated as a Runescape botting community. If it wasn't for Runescape we wouldn't be here.
Okay not private, but new rules need to be implemented.

We emerged as a place where people could contribute to an include therefore ending petty include wars. We were created for the sake of community.
Honestly I don't have a problem with how SRL is doing currently.
Bringing back Jr Membs would be a nice start. More would have to be done though or this increased popularity we're getting will probably be the thing that will bring upon our downfall.

Same here. SRL is doing great! We are at 8k active users now and activity is crazy. But I firmly believe that we need to implement new rules to regulate who could access our great products and who cant.

Sadly people just don't understand things like this and put greed and themselves before community wellbeing.

No comment. If your talking about me then I created this thread because i'm worried we might get abused. But if I was greedy and I was putting myself and Runescape before this community I would've left for Rsbot/Rsbuddy/iBot a long time ago, dontcha think?

And I'm saying their actions don't affect us if all we care about is learning how to program.

I think like this, we are helping users out… Even if they leech, although some changes that should be made are:
- Post Count should be high, in order to Apply for Members or get to access JR Member Scripts (that shall get leechers more involved on the forums).

Nothing. In fact I ripped most of wizzy plugin and the srl include and made a dll so that I could bot on my main :p. I do agree though that anyone with half a brain can rip off the code and use it to farm gold and other stuff :fiery:. But it is too late for us to try and stop it. Maybe if the community was always private we probably wouldn't have this problem.

Going private would cause more harm than good. I believe it's not the program that is the problem, but the scripts released. Personally, I think all scripts should only be visible to members with certain requirements fullfilled. Jrs like suggested or an entirely new rank

My personal opinion is something similar. Im not a model citizen and believe it or not, I'm not one of the best people to respond to this thread as i am one of the people who came here after bot nuke.
Going Private in my opinion doesn't do anyone any good. All it does is hard the very thing this community stands for, Learning. I do however agree with Kyle about trying to bring back JR Members section. Scripting is a hobby of mine. I love to script and find aways around everything. Understanding the fact that we are using Runescape as a base for our scripting teachings we tend to ignore the damage this community is also doing the Runescape. Believe it or not, Leachers are starting to misuse the scripts written by members for the sake of learning. Understand that a lot of the older members of the forum do not play runescape but the newer ones still play. As the older members might not care if their script gets leached but the new member see the difference in the economy.
