What happens when we die?

There are many different perspectives on the afterlife. Heck, there are many different perspectives on life itself. If one can not understand life, then should we question the after life?

In my opinion, life is but a dream. When we die, we wake up; as if our previous life was just a daydream, or a blink of an eye.

What do you guys think about the afterlife? Is there one? Why / why not.

Discuss!

I do believe there is an afterlife, I however do not believe in God/Jesus/any mythical figures. Science has more theories which favor evolutionism, which is what I believe. Creationalism just cannot be justified, no matter how hard anyone tries. After we die, I believe we are all reincarnated in another life - whether it be an animal, insect, or human. Think about it, where were we before our parents gave birth to us? We could've been Abraham Lincoln a few lives prior, we don't know. Truth is we have no remembarance of any of our past, what do we remember before we were born? Absolutely nothing.

One idea I like to entertain is that our "souls" or the essence of ourselves (whatever you wanna call it) are limited by the body and it's 5 senses and that the whole "afterlife" thing is just being free from the body and it's limitations ie. slipping into another dimension. But I also think it's quite possible nothing happens to us at all and it's all been mental acrobratics to make us feel better about death.

When you die, your brain stops sending electrical currents around and your cells will eventually stop dividing themselves.

Which means that when you die, there's nothing. Simple as that.

Although nothing doesn't exist.

You would simply stop existing.

But since we're made up of energy, the law of conservation of energy must be applied. Energy never ceases to exists, it is merely transfered.

Any thoughts on this?

But there is only one very specific form of energy that can be considered "you". After it is transferred into another form, it ceases to be you. So what is the point?

In my opinion, the idea of an afterlife where you are still "you" does not make sense. If you want to broaden the definition of an afterlife, then I would be inclined to agree that there is one. Our bodies are used as a food source when we die, so our chemical composition is used and recycled through the earth by living organisms. Your body's atoms are used to create new life and sustain existing life, and therefore can be considered a part of your "afterlife". But really, there would not be much point calling it "your afterlife" as it is not really "you" as you currently define yourself.

its impossible to conceive the concept of a void after death. you cant imagine it, its impossible to think about directly, so i believe there has to be some sort of extension after this life.

otherwise whats the point? Im catholic but by force of my parents, not by choice. theres so much wrong with organized religion its ridiculous.

I always had this weird feeling that after you die, you are born into a new life as a baby for hatchling of some sort. BUT, you don't remember anything as if your mind has been wiped clean of everything you ever knew and you have to repeat the process of life over and over and over… and over.

Interesting thought though, if you were God (not saying there is one) but if you were God, what kind of people would you like in heaven. How about somebody that's lived every life there was to live so they understand the viewpoint of everyone? You die, you are a soul that remembers all of your past lives, you get put into another life without memory, you die in that life, repeat until complete. Not saying that's what I believe but that would be neat.

Buddhist monks hold a very interesting view; they say that one goes through a phase called Samsara which is essentially an incubation period after death, and ending in a rebirth, which lasts 46 days.

This is quite interesting because you cannot tell the gender of a fetus until 46 days after conception. Which coincidentally is also the same time the pineal gland (the gland that holds the "soul" molecule, DMT) forms from specialized cells that are purposely separated from brain tissue cells, where it eventually comes to rest in the very center of one's brain.

The belief of Samsara has been held for thousands of years and well before we could use science to determine those scientific findings, so I think that the monks must have gotten something right.

I'm fairly certain there is no afterlife. You just die and that's it.

The closest experience (or lack of) I can imagine would be much like when you are made unconcious under a general anaesthetic during a major operation in hospital. You can be out for hours, no dreams, thoughts, nothing, and you wake up like feeling like no time has passed at all.

Although it would be nice to continue to float around as some sort of cognitive sensing ethereal being I'm not getting my hopes up :P.

There are actually stories of people under anaesthetics who watched their surgeries from a 3rd person view and knew things they NEVER would have known unless they were telling the truth. Not sure if I believe it but it's rather intriguing. Seems to only happen to people that are on the verge of death.

If you believe in science I'm assuming you believe in higher dimensions since they are essentially irrefutable based on the proofs of the existence of time and lower dimensions.

You don't think that we are linked to a higher dimension in any way? I find it hard to believe that we can be so firmly rooted in the lower 3 dimensions and not be connected to any higher ones. After all, everything natural is based upon connections and patterns.

But one can make conjectures of what happens after. Being human draws us towards these questions and we all like to throw our ideas and opinions out because I believe talking about "life" and "after life" humbles us.

Now for the OP, I think there are three main possibilities to what may happen.
1. Our entire cognitive being ceases to exists and you become obliterated (What I'm getting at is no life after death).
2. There is a Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory and we become judged on the lives we lived.
3. We reincarnate as another being, unknowing of our previous existence because we have different brain connections that make memories and personalities. We are completely different.

Isn't this fun? I would love to be a philosopher and just ponder questions like these forever.

Oh yea, and I'd like to throw this out there for people who are astutely against there being a god. If there is a god and it created everything, what makes you think you could prove or disprove of its existence? Human logic is ran on making sense, if god is all powerful, we could never comprehend it because it doesn't (make sense). You in a sense are putting yourself on god's level.

And yes, I do believe in God because it is better to believe in it and be wrong and be obliterated than it is to not believe in god and go to Hell for eternal damnation.

Oh, and I'm not telling you to believe in God, I'm just throwing out there my thoughts and ideas on this whole matter so that you can make that decision yourself. I see more often than not, atheists who bash on religious beliefs because they say we are "idiots" "uneducated" and "blindly believe in something that doesn't exists and accept it as truth." That is farthest from the truth. We love to ponder questions about this.

So please, if you are atheist and are about to post something against religion, think about what you are saying because if you are going to bash on a religion 90% of the time you just sound like an arrogant asshole who can't think for himself. What I like to call a band-wagon atheist.

Damn, I kind of veered off course. Hopefully reading this has been at least slightly thought provoking to you (It was fun writing this).

I'm also Catholic.

Actually, I've heard that when you die you see white light because a rush of endorphins go to your brain causing a chemical reaction which makes it seem like we are seeing white light when we die (or near death). I know this doesn't really help my speech on why I believe God exists but I think it is actually quite interesting. I wonder what might be the truth? Only one way to find out.

My belief is that if we are linked to a higher dimension natural selection would have evolved us to interface/sense/conceptualise in that dimension in some way.

Because we can't, I assume that anything that happens in that dimension is of no concequence to our existence.

I can't reason why it would have any more consequence when the physical neuropathways that give structure to our consciousness have begun to decay and dissappear after electrical braindeath (people have been know to revive from close to electrical braindeath).

The problem with this perspective is that most people don't remember when they were 3-4 years old. Obviously you were alive then. I'm not saying this thought is "wrong", just that we could have been alive before we were "born".

I was raised Christian so I believe that Heaven exists. As some have said before, I would rather believe in something that is wrong, than to not believe in something that is right. I've never been to Heaven, so I don't have the evidence to support it, however that is my belief.

There is no way to know what is true and what is not true; Plato. According to Socrates we are just to go on, and this/life was just a mere blimp in our true purpose (Unknown) we are supposed to join with our spirit and become one again.

I don't think ANYONE can make a true statement about what happens after death, maybe we hit up heaven and be with God. Perhaps our spirit depending on our actions during our time at earth, transforms into a new being (Animal/etc.). Who knows, we will all find out one day though.. unfortunately we can't relay it back.

They are very good guessers!! Actually there are numerous explanations for any "miracles" in the Bible. The virgin Mary giving birth to Jesus? Artificial insemination is one. Jesus turning water into wine? We can turn mercury into gold… come on…

God creating Eve from Adam? If God made Adam like the creation story goes, he would have one set of DNA and taking the rib from Adam would give Eve the exact same DNA as Adam. Their offspring (if they were functional at all due to the exact same chromosomes) they would look exactly alike. And so would their offspring. And so on. See there are too many genetic variations to have come from just one set of DNA examples are hair color height eye color and skin colour just to name a few off the top of my head. Also the Bible isn't credible at all really. Anyone can write something and pass it off as the truth. Every read the Bible? Jesus fasted for 40 days. Jonah in the belly of the whale… everything that has to due with a length of time is 40 days, weeks, months, or years! This is the end of my rant. Thanks!

Tbh I grew up in a religious family, but for some reason I don't believe there is a after life, I feel like we get reincarnated (or born into a new family) without remembering anything about our past lives.

Maybe you Re-spawn as a baby once again but without knowing anything about your past. (Runescape Style) lol.

I'd like to believe that we are reincarnated… No one can know for sure what happens, but it seems like staying in heaven would get kinda boring after a few million years… We need a little real life grime. >:)
Also, I have always wondered about the Christian faith… If Satan hates God… And someone who dies also hates God… Why would they be punished in hell? Won't they be kinda chill with Satan?

in Christianity when you die you pick whether to go to heaven or hell
however you look at yourself in the eyes of others not your own

the options are hell, heaven or a place cant remember the name in which you wait until you think you a worthy for heaven
