Asian Parents -.-

Many of you might not know but I am asian. (This will help explain the story, for those of you with asian parents you will understand)

Now the dilemma I have is my parents mostly my dad, I just got my report card mailed home today (he gets the mail before I get home) he checks it… I get home, first thing he tells me "Damn you're an idiot I wish you would just go to "this" college cause you won't succeed anyway" ("This" college refers to a college in the middle of chicago even a kid with a 2.0 could get into)

Now I am like "uhh? why" cause you have PA all over your report card (I have one PA… PA stands for passing does not affect GPA (No actual grade).)

He didn't get it -.-, he signed the paper 6 months ago but doesn't remember and now thinks I am failing/dumb.

My grades for this year so far:
Calc AB : A
AP stats: A
A+ Comp repair: A
AP English 4: A
AP physics : PA (The class is hard as hell, so I am taking it pass/fail)
Strength and conditioning: A
—

Don't really know why I am complaining I should be used to it, but honestly it aggravates me.. show some appreciation to your kid who tries pretty hard.

Haha sorry for the rant, I like sharing with people I will never meet in real life. :P.

So the moral, if you have a kid always tell them you appreciate their hard work if they actually do work hard.

Don't worry about it, my parents are like that too. But one thing I learned from the land of interwebs is the art of trolling.

Well ok, not REALLY trolling, but more or less just don't argue, explain to them and keep your voice calm and if they said anything back to me I just say "Yes I agree, I am a complete idoit, but there is nothing else that can be changed", and if they keep on arguing, i just do

Repeat
Writeln( 'I know I am a complete idoit, but there is nothing that any human being do can make this situation better.');
Until False;

For my parents, that annoyed the shit out of them, and they end up saying "I am never talking to you again", and then they yell at me a bit more and they are done and completely cool the next day. That way its much better than fighting.

Yes, I am asain too and I also have asian parents:). I had to use this "trolling" pretty much each report card period, and it really helps and always keep us from fighting for more than 5 minutes. But do not worry about, Our parents are brough up that way, thinking that using verbal or physical force can make their kids some how get better in their life, which is a good intension but they become too close minded and then the use of force becomes the only thing they know.

As long as you know that your going to a good school, and you know you can suceed in life, then just ignore ANY ONE who is telling you that you can't, if not just do the trolling :)

I am currently in second year uni and doing research for one of the biggest hydrogen fuel cell / alternative energy company in NA. And trust me on this, big companies doesn't give a shit which university you come from, only what you can do and maybe a decent like 80% average in UNI and thats about it. r

The situation is the same with my significant other. But she's going in to architecture and she's really pressured at the moment.

On a positive note, as bad as it sounds fuck what your parents think, they'll catch on what your actually like - if you give them the opportunity to go mad at you. i think what matter's is that you care about what they think of you. other then that all it shows is that they expect something that you cant give them and they should learn to expect only what you can give them. I'm also Asian, but i do what i want with my life. i also used to be like you, i used to try hard for my parent's and not for myself, i guess i just live'd how they wanted me to live life and not my own. right now i'm happy with where i am, i'm doing whatever i want, i study for myself, parent's respect that and expect nothing more then me just putting my effort into what i do. they've lowered their boundaries quite a lot too and they've started to know what i'm like as a person and accepted that. anyone else reading this probably wont understand this but - you know how Asian parents are with girlfriends and drinking etc? well my parents don't seem to mind anymore, my dad gives me money every time i go into to town for drinks and stuff, and they both let me sleep at my girlfriends house/ let her sleep at mine. As long as they know that i put effort into my education they don't mind what i do.

On a shorter note, let your parents go mad at you and let them know you a little more. don't worry about stuff as much and have fun. but always think ahead.

You know what, I had worse. Back in 1 or 2 years ago whenever I got my report card, dad kind of complained that I never got 3.7+ GPA at university. I was always just a little bit below. I know, but I just don't want to work so hard for the extra 0.05 GPA to get there :P

A few year back i got 5A*'s and 5A's at highschool (UK) and when i picked up my results i literally made an apologetic phonecall to my dad saying something like "look i know i did shit and I thought I could get 10A*'s without revision, but i was wronnggggg, soooo sorryyyy!!!!" (btw A* is 90%+ in a subject A 80+ in all exams).

Then a year later i did my AS levels, in the two exams which are 80% of overall AS grade i got 150/150 and 87/90…. Phoned dad and he was like "Probably lost your paper for 150/150 so they gave you random grade" <————— uber troll…

My GPA first quarter was 3.43 and 2nd quarter was only 3.14..
My parents are kinda mad, but they forget it after 10 minutes

Hey they just want you to do good, tell him to talk to the teacher, most foreign Parents are like that because they do not want you to go through whatever they had to go to.
My dad flew from Pakistan to Canada with only 19$ in his pocket, from there got 2 jobs and so on…
It was really tough for our Parents who came out of country and now living in the states.

So, take it in and just always remember they do it for the best for you Mate, even if they are wrong on some parts.

It's not that bad? It's their way of saying they believe in you and they're trying to push you to push yourself.
I'd be more upset if they didn't care what kind of grades you got. Your parents clearly think that you have something going for you and they probably believe that the more pressure you put on the situation the more likely it will be refined and professional.
^The "situation" being you in this metaphor.

I would agree with you here, but honestly the asian parents I know around chicago only want their kids to "super" succeed just to prove their kid is better than another parents kids. Which really isn't the right thing to do, haha.

My parents are like that too, they promised me if I got into a good HS I could play as much as I want and no more tutoring. But guess what, when I did, they told me to work even harder because I was in a higher school now. Seriously, WTF!

Tell them this is the Modern age, Not the Ming Dynasty. Politicians gets voted in, not based on a single test. Therefore in today's world, who you know is more important than what you know. By being an Antisocial book worm you miss out on life AND never meet connections that would help you to a position of power…. proceed to ask them if they can name one Asian Politician in the west, also point out EX-president BUSH of United States Of America was a C averaging student his whole life.
