Inactive Members?

Well I was looking through the forums and I stumbled across the members list… seems there are 471 Members… so I got to thinking… if there are so many members why aren't there new scripts being released everyday or something? I mean with that many people you've got to be at least producing 1 killer script a week and developing more sophisticated methods of scripting.

It was just a thought and I know most people probably don't care but I thought I'd bring up the issue anyways…

Here are some statistics….

[Administrators] - 6
[Moderators] - 9
[SR Helpers] - 21
[SR Testers] - 10
[SRL Developers] - 33
[SRL Masters] - 16
[SRL Members] - 471
[SRL Scripters] - 56
[SRL Tutorial Writers] - 21

Also and shouldn't everyone be considered an SRL Scripter if they're a SRL Member.

I mean come on people I post a snippet of my script and I don't get any form of feedback on it, can one of you 470 people at least take the time to look at it for a few minutes and give me some feedback.

Sorry for those of you who do, do a lot of work and help out people and reply and whatnot. This post really isn't for you unless you agree then post some input.

Here is what I propose we do, first and foremost…

(1) Prune inactive members…
Yes I know some people are on vacation and at war, lost internet, ect… but the people who didn't normally post and just plain haven't come on in a long time should be put back to a normal Registered User. If they come back they can re apply and most likely be re-accepted.

(2)Be More Supportive / Active….
What I mean is when someone posts a script or a snippet and asks you to please just take a look at it for a min and tell me the pros and cons, what needs to be fixed, what can I do better, at least post something. It will make future scripts a lot better and scripters will be more efficient in scripting.

(3)Do Something…
Basically don't just get accepted and do nothing other than use members script to level your char. Chip in help people make better scripts give them some feedback make some more of your own scripts, thats why you joined originally right?

I do realize I haven't been a member long but it doesn't take long to noticed things like this.

You have no idea how many times this has been discussed. Nothing is going to happen any time soon.

Well I think that the SRL members with 0 posts should be shown the door.
Because im pretttyy sure they arent doing the community any good.

Alot of members tend to come and go sometimes months at a time. I am one of them that does this. Sometimes I get to the point where I spend too much time in the virtual enviroment and forget all other things going on.Thats when I take a break.

I dont think they should be deleted. What are they hurting being a member? Sure some may not be contributing and just using scripts but I am sure they post if something goes wrong with a script. And that in itself is very usefull as that is what makes scripts flawess is finding all there errors.

And if they are genuinly just gone then maybe their should be a auto delete for those inactive for a year. Thats reasonable.

I'm not saying delete all the inactive people what I'm saying is people need to do more, I mean cant you see that with almost 500 people in this community it only produces like 1 script a week at the most. I mean with basic logic this community should be cranking out new scripts every day. I mean..

1 - 2 Days to find something to script.
6 - 8 Days to finish framework and basic procedures.
2 - 4 Days to tweak procedures and make it more reliable.
1 - 3 Days to test and fix prominent bugs.

So at max your looking at 17 Days to make a decent script, I mean even if your just casually making a script then it could take longer depending on how often you work on it. I'm just saying it seems a little bit ridiculous to have that many members and still be fooled by things like walking in RS. I know its not a cakewalk but with the collective knowledge you should be able to develop quickly.

You don't really have to write scripts every day to be SRL Member, simply by contributing some other way (Posting useful stuff, helping out newbies, participating in interesting discussions…) you justify your SRL Member status…

I haven't released a script since I first joined in.
I just made few scripts to prove that I know how to script which granted me SRL Member status.

But I don't really have time to script nowadays, not to mention SCAR isn't compatible with Linux, even if I wanted to I couldn't.
And yes, I stopped autoing like 1.5 year ago, so basicly you can't accuse me of leeching, because I haven't downloaded a single script from Member scripts section :-)

So you recommend they should remove people like me, just because we don't script or auto?

Well scripting is not the only way to contribute to community?
If you auto, atleast you can help scripters by testing their scripts and posting progress reports, bugs you found and similar stuff… that doesn't make you leecher.

Releasing a script every day would make scripts suck.
Better have 10 flawless ones, instead of 1000 scripts that can only do 2 loads before they mess up.
It's the quality that matters, not quantity!

Hope you get my point.

Sincerely,
c0de.

Thats what I'm saying not that people need to release a new script every day but do stuff like you, help out newbies ,test, and what not. It just that when I see people posting new scripts or ask for ideas I only see a few people post…

Here I'll look through some recent released and queries and tell you who I see posting, helping nubs, testing, ect.

Here I looked through the SRL Forums and found out who posted in more than 3 threads with something constructive to say…

You should stop trying to find fault in members as a whole then finding some members to make an exception. There is a hell of a lot more people that contribute in some way or another. How would you like it if you left for a while and then came back whilst still retaining knowledge to find yourself unable to see some of the more useful functions or posts in the members section?

I'm not trying to flame the members I'm just giving examples… because you have to see some of my point, 500 members and only a portion doing something, those aren't the only ones who are helping people those are just the ones who stood out as i looked through posts. Also I really wouldn't care if I left for over 6 months and came back and I wasn't a member I could see their point *probably* , the people who are gone aren't really bothering me so much as the people who are here but don't do anything other than use scripts from the members section. I know there are a lot of people who are helping and I know that not everyone can commit the time to make a new script or help someone every day, but I don't know why people can't just post saying something like…

"Hey I looked at your script, looks pretty good but you need to change ___ and maybe you should try using ___ instead of __. But overall I got it to work for ____ and it didn't screw up too bad except when _______."

Like for example I posted my Script Maker
http://www.villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7341?p=77519#post77519
like 5 days ago and I've gotten 2 replies neither of which were particularly helpful. Not just to use me as the only example, but that is what I'm talking about.

I don't like this idea much.. I joined and I released only a few scripts, but I have been learning.. When I became a member my scripting knowledge was very low, i was using things like findcolorspiral, and then uptext.. No fail safes nothing more.. I have spent soo much time on this forum, not leeching scripts, but mostly reading.. I read around the tutorials almost once a day.. Now I actually know how to make a dtm and have it function properly.. I try to make scripts, but there never that good.. because most of the time there is a better version of it.. I made a power chopper, was planning on updating but there is a way better version by starblaster.. I have finally learned radialwalking, and am trying to find a reasonable script to make…

I also have just entered grade 12, and my future depends on this grade. I have to get into a good university, and for that I need good marks.. So lately I have not been active here but that does not mean(sp) I am leeching… I do download scripts, but only use them little.. Most of my srl sig time is from personal experimenting scripts that I made, but are just too garbage to release.. It's because I know the problem and I have never left a script run over night, and hardly let a script run when I am away from comp more than 1/2 hour.. So all my personal scripts require person to check, so I kinda want to make a nice big script.. Problem right now is that grade 12 is coming down hard on me.. Probably harder as days get closer.. Who knows how much time I"ll have to play runescape, and script while in uni.. Might leave runescape when in uni, but no way will I never log in here to read around..

My point is that doing this will boot a lot of readers like me.. I tend to post less (used to do alot before), but I do read alot.. So I think it's a really bad idea.. Maybe kick those that you are 100% sure, but give 'em a chance, so not ban them just take their srl member thing away and let them re earn it..

I don't agree with deleting inactive people. I usually don't post. I hang out in the tutorial area and write a tut once in a while. If you start deleting users they will get angry and might not come back.

I don't agree either, look at me for example.. Im here when i can get online, moved outta my moms house, Cant afford internet! Therefor im gone 6 months at a time, i enjoy this community i have put out lots of work in the past.. Simply just dont have the time to script anymore! I come around to see how the cheating forums have came along since they have started, Also to talk to some of the other legends around here!!!

HISTORY

I do not agree with your idea. I think most of us earnt our rights to this status. I made like 4 scripts with around 5 updates on each. I may have stopped making scripts or being active, but I do occassionaly come and check out the scripting people have made. I don't use the scripts, I just admire them. Lots of people out there that do like me.

A while ago, SRL was public, then it went private (no more registering) and then it went public again. When it when public again, everyone that was on before (when it was private), no matter how nooby, was made automatic member.

2007-03-28 17:40:07

Oh so your saying that a lot of those people might really never go back on… It's not that you "have" to kick these people it was just a thought, because there are 500 or so people on this list… how many of them have been active in the last year?

Serial_KillaZ

2007-03-28 17:44:56

Well also, there is the ppl that get sick of runescape n such, Therefor Quiting and then something sparks and they wanna get back into RS and or Scripting.. Whats more annoying then having to register for a forum that you were a part of in the past.. When you do decide to come back.

Special Ed

2007-03-28 17:52:39

No don't delete their accounts but I was just saying…. maybe someone who doesn't script anymore gave their account to a bunch of friends and all they do it take scripts are run them, thats why we're seeing so many lvl 3s right now auto-ing… and if we do remove them from member and they come back they can re-apply and most likely be re-accepted.

da_professa

2007-03-29 03:19:31

It's really sad if some1 does such a thing.. Also many lvl 3s are from some bot, cuz u can tell from the way they walk and how they do hard randoms automatically.. but yeah I have noticed some lvl 3s that seem to be using scar..

Well, i did that…and said you should add RRW system to your script maker…! I have days when i cant be on computer…so i do other stuff…like be with my friends etc. i might be 1 week of because im in a vacation (is it spelled like that) so i cant post then :D…pretty logic eh?…anyways some members should be kicked…after 1 month not being active…! but thats just my opinion..!
