New Anti-Botting Method - Optimus

2012-01-27 14:49:35

We’re delighted to be able to announce that we’ve finally triumphed in our 2-year legal battle with Impulse Software, the developers of the iBOT RuneScape botting software.

Their statement on their websites sums it up very nicely:

“Farewell,

We (Mark/Eric Snellman t/a Impulse Software) have owned and operated the websites www.rscheata.net, www.impsoft.net and www.oembots.com for several years. We’ve been developing and making money through these websites from botting software called iBOT that works exclusively with RuneScape.

We’ve been involved in a lawsuit with Jagex in the US regarding the legality of this software and our actions for the last two years.

Recently, judgment was entered in Jagex’s favor at Court on every count in the case. We have to pay Jagex a significant sum of money, although we are not allowed to say exactly how much for legal reasons. We are also prevented by injunction from doing a number of things in the future, including developing botting software, helping other people develop or use botting software or talking about Jagex, the lawsuit or RuneScape. If we breach any of the conditions of the injunction (such as by developing new bot software or helping people cheat in RuneScape) we would have to pay Jagex at least $1,000,000.

Throughout the course of this lawsuit, we’ve come to understand the harm that botting does to RuneScape and Jagex. We’d like to apologize to Jagex and to all legitimate RuneScape players for the damage and harm iBOT has done.

In the next few weeks our websites, domains, code and customer details will be passed over to Jagex along with details of all those people who we know have developed scripts for iBOT and sold or re-sold those scripts.

We also won’t be going near Jagex or any Jagex game ever again. In fact, we’re prohibited from playing RuneScape or any other Jagex game ever again as a condition of this case ending.

Shortly, all references to iBOT and Impulse Software will disappear from the internet. We’d encourage all of you who have scripts or iBOT to delete them and certainly not to try and use or develop them. We’ve not been able to fix them anyway following Bot Nuke week, but if you did manage to get them working again, you’d be open to the same claims Jagex has made against us.

Mark and Eric Snellman – trading as Impulse Software”

Obviously, this is a big win for us, but it’s also just one of the latest initiatives in our ongoing offensive to permanently stamp out botting and gold-farming in RuneScape. First and foremost, we’ve remained dedicated to this cause to provide you - our esteemed community - an enduringly great game, and we’ve no intention of stopping here.

We remain committed to our ongoing work to ensure that the successes of Bot Nuke Day are never undone by staying a few steps ahead in the arms race with the remaining bot developers and gold farmers. We’re already well underway with our next generation of anti-botting software called Optimus, which is going to be released shortly, and we’re also currently developing ways to remove the remaining screen-scraper bots from the game. We’ll also be continuing to fight gold-farmers on every front.

The team has been dedicated to eliminating the last of the performance issues experienced by some users since Bot Nuke Day, and we will shortly be releasing an update intended to resolve these problems. We’re also planning further improvements to game accessibility and performance in future updates this year.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Mark Gerhard
CEO & CTO

They aren't ever going to defeat color. It's not possible

shstiger2009

It's just not possible in my eyes to stop color bots…especially Simba. It is a completely separate program, has functions called to read the screen, checks colors/texts/shapes and performs a click based on those things. The only thing I can see them doing to combat it is to drastically change colors/shapes of things daily/weekly, which would piss off a lot of legit players.

All I've seen them do to fight color bots is change the randoms and the colors of things in them. The BeeHive, Coffin, Molly random…etc. I haven't been botting for over 2 weeks, but from what I've seen, developers here have already found ways around this.

You see, this velociraptor appears whenever the game detects you are bot-like or that you are relying on specific pixels to detect something. It also makes a very terrifying roar.

Jagex may not be able to detect color bots as easily as reflection/injection,
But they can still go after the developers of Simba (Wizzup?) and take 'em to court.

So basically their 'new' anti botting method is taking bot developers to court.

I doubt Jagex sees it that way.
It's still a bot - a 'threat' to Runescape,

However, perhaps they can't take legal action since Simba/SRL is non-profit.
I would not know.

As others have stated, it's not a bot, it's a program which can detect colors, shapes, and text on your computer. People use it for Runescape. Sure they can ban you for using an automated program if they have enough proof, but there is no hacking of the client done or looking at the actual game code. In other words, they can't do shit about anyone using Simba but ban they're account.

Not really laughing you just can't take them serious long term.
Reflection bots or whatever injection are back massive scale this was a big improvement for the gold farmers becouse theyre the ones using that.
I personally don't see why they would even consider stopping us like yeah we are not doing anything important right now so we just go charge our members even more and then stop the bots and leave the goldfarmers honestly it woulden't suprise me if those gold selling company's were owned by jagex becouse it seems they are the ones never affected by anything at all.

JLV

2012-01-28 11:36:32

I'm sure many people know this, but I figure I should post it for those who don't.

Breaking the rules of a game is not illegal. Breaking the terms and conditions that you agree to when you sign up for an account is not illegal.

The only reason they could sue iBot is because the company used methods that directly attached to and modified the game coding itself, which is Jagex's property. This is illegal.

"Screen scrapers" are not illegal. They do not edit or deal with the code of Runescape, and are therefore only breaking the rules of the game.

The only possibility of getting rid of SRL would be because SRL previously allowed injection/reflection. So maybe they could sue based on past actions, but never on the current state of SRL.

No offense but I hadn't even heard of this site till last week :s I highly doubt Jagex would go after admins on this site, as it's been said this site is nonprofit, other sites like RiD etc you have to pay to use their bots= more of a threat in jagexs eyes. I hope they don't manage to stop these bots anyways as thanks to Flight the badass I am creeping upto 99 rc :D

EDIT: Although I am not underestimating Jagex, sooooo many people including me thought they couldn't give a damn about rs/weren't bothered about the bots due to the revenue generated and oh look, bot nuke day… Hence why I am powering through zmi :P I suspect it'll be in a week or two =/ Also they have Jacmob from RsBuddy working for them now and he was sure they would be able to stop colour bots also =/ Idk how though >.<

See the reason we can't be stopped legally is because what we do is 100% legal, simba can be used for ANYTHING we just happen to have a forum called runescape scripts. We do NOT alter any in-game code.

Legally they cannot take us down

Technologically they cannot take us down unless of course velociraptor comes to play, then we are screwed. We don't need ID's etc. The only thing I can see Jagex doing is to create objects that change in shape/color dramatically pretty often; but what are the chances of that, no legit player would know what is going on.

This has been discussed many of times.

It is near impossible to stop/detect colour bots. Unless they really went to extreme lengths to stop bots and go as far as turning RS into 'GreyScape' by changing everything in game into a shade of grey. And they are not going to do that, because it will be virtually unplayable.

Simba is not a RS Botting application, Simba is an automation program which does tasks by finding colours and shapes.

Now will you all stop moaning. Until it becomes 'GreyScape' and the Velociraptor comes into play. You are all safe.

well i can think of a way they can decrease the number of bots running but it would mean stopping th use of browser and make a client that has a random string that has to match with the program and acounnt before alowing login such as the wow security keychain but software based.

Optimus, which is going to be released shortly, and we’re also currently developing ways to remove the remaining screen-scraper bots from the game.

Guys I am no legal guru BUT I believe if Jagex went after the site they could create a decent argument and Megaupload would be an angle in on that. It would not be as easy a case as Megaupload but it could theoretically be a case in that because the site HOUSES the scripts and therefore it is culpable in facilitating theft as members use the site to make gains into the game which some people convert into real life cash.

There are some really hard parts in there to nail down BUT it's an angle.

I believe some of the hard part is getting round the fact that the application does not interact with RS but smart lawyers can do amazing things in court. Throw into that having the wrong judge on the bench and it could make for an interesting ruling.

Anyways just saying lets not think we are TOO safe. They could change the way we operate. When Jagex gets enough of this cat and mouse game and is beaten too much they will resort to the next stage of the game.

Remember the saying desparate times calls for desparate measures. Maybe they don't have a real chance but maybe they play their card anyhow to see if they can bluff us.

Just thoughts. I could be wrong. Hell I could be far off but don't ever think YOU HAVE WON. That's when they get you.

Silverfox

2012-04-09 02:47:12

That would be a very flimsy argument to stand up in a u.s. court. The thing with mega upload is that it was "taking money away" from the big businesses by having the movies and what not on their site which is a form of theft and is specifically illegal. There is nothing inherently illegal about using a color bot, the worst anyone here is doing is breaking jagex tos. It would be comparable for them to try to sue someone for impersonating a mod, it is against the tos but no law. They could try to make the case but they would have a hard time finding a smart lawyer willing to risk his reputation to do it, then again if the money was right probably not. I imagine if they ever did seek legal recourse they would soon find out they have no leg to stand on. There are no u.s. laws on the book that this break the worst they could do is ban any of us. I understand where you are coming at with mega upload but the difference is there was illegal products being hosted and downloaded from there. There is nothing illegal about the scripts on here.

Lets be honest though the only reason megaupload got shut down was because of the massive amount of lobbyists the music and movie industries have.

But the thing is, simba is used on many different Programs. Simba could practically do your homework. The scripts may or may NOT be targeted towards runescape. There is really no way of getting under SRL's skin.

GF more bots going down. Simba ftw!

Jagex can't do anything about it either; not only is it colour, it isn't a dedicated bot either. Just a language and client which CAN be used on the side to RS botting, what a coincidence!
Jagex would never go after every single scripter for every single script they write for RS botting. How would they even be able to prove who wrote any script?

OT/
Jagex will never be able to block color bots from playing the game, if they do that, they will also be stopping people who don't use color bots from playing the game. Color bots LOOK at screen, recognise different color patterns, anaylse them to make sure they are correcly shaped and do something. Isn't that the same as what we humans do when we play runescape (although not as methodically as these bots do it)?

Anyways that being said, the only way to stop color bots will be via a lawsuit as they have done with iBOT. Although I can't start imagining their possible arguements
