Current Influx of "Leechers"

Ok guys, i know there has been a lot of talk about the latest influx of applications/leechers since the bot nuke. I as does most people who have had to deal with this stuff before know how annoying it can get. The idea of JR members i believe has recently been discussed in relation to that matter, so hopefully that can help us out soon.

Once thing i felt i really needed to bring up though is our attitude towards them. Scattered throughout the internet are A LOT of runescape cheating communities - some big, some small - and all of them have a different atmosphere and ethos. So it is understandable for users to get used to a way of doing things, and then forced to move, come to a new place, and expect to do things the same way. It is human nature, we are stubborn creatures.

SRL is a growing and thriving community and has been since it's public birth, back in 2006. For this to continue to happen, we need new members coming in and we need them to script and to develop new ideas. The current treatment of non SRL members is not going to achieve this.

When someone asks to leak a script, fix a script, apply without a script, or anything that is not how we do things around here. Simply give them a nudge in the right direction (NOTE: I did not say give them the answer), explain to them how we do it around here, and move on. If you come upon one of these threads, see someone has done that and feel that you have more to add, then do it, otherwise… move on. We do not need multiple people saying the same thing and flaming these users over what could just be a force of habbit, rather than laziness.

We need these users to ensure the continuation of SRL and multiple SRL members "ganging up" or flaming the users, saying the same thing will only encourage bad attitude or for them to leave. Yes, good riddance you might say, but there are plenty of respected users here today who started out the same way, learnt from their mistakes and evolved.

I'm sorry for so much text, but this is an issue we need to resolve together as a community, to help ourselves and the community out.

TL;DR - Stop the mob action on "leecher threads". If one person tells them what they are doing is wrong and explains how to do it/find the answer. Move on, Don't make the situation bigger.

Please feel free to retaliate to this in any way you see fit.

Maybe I haven't read the forums enough, but I feel the majority of members are actually acting in the way you are suggesting.

I have however, seen many new members do exactly the opposite, as though they are defending SRL to gain respect? Just my thoughts.

EDIT: I retract that statement. http://villavu.com/forum/showpost.php?p=907020&postcount=17

This sort of thing is just not on and makes me very sad.

I think this is mainly directed towards new members. But this too has always been the case. People need to be given a little direction, and then they understand how we've managed to stay alive for so long. It is all a matter of common sense really.

Maybe I should write a few lines, would that help?

Perhaps a clear statement of what SRL is, and isn't. Similar to how we had a do and donts for applying for srl member.

But no one will follow that, just look at all the applications with NO script, or too new.

I'm unsure what a new member is really, as most are new to me. While writing up a page of what we are and aren't may help some users, i doubt that the majority will care. New members are always wanting to try and impress those who are have been here longer and will try and post what they think we want to see. This kind of document, might help these guys out.

Really though, i think as a community, we need to be aware of this problem, ignore the fact that they have failed to read any bit of documentation about the forums and try to nudge them into a person that will help the community. Swearing at these people (Yes, it still counts when you censor it), abusing them and name calling only makes this situation worse.

When in a clearly sarcastic way, but I still help them it is okay? :p
I don't tell them they made a clearly stupid post, but it may feel like, so I don't know.
They still get the answer if that counts.
If needed of course I will change my attitude.

You need to be aware that the way things are said, are interpreted differently to different people. This is something that you need to be aware of here and every where. The issue is not in people getting the answer, but the way they get it. We must make sure even the new users are treated with respect and dignity that you would expect people to treat you with, regardless of the situation.

Can we set up an automatic PM to new members?
I feel the majority of frustration members/veterans get with new members is they don't want to read anything unless it is a direct answer.

Perhaps give them a few links in a private message example:

Welcome to SRL!
Congratulations you are on your way to joining one of the best communities.

But first please take a peek at these helpful Q/A's, which should solve most of your problems.

How not to be a leech! (You will be liked a lot more!)

SRL Youtube Channel (Video tuts etc.) ***
http://www.youtube.com/user/SrlVillavu/videos

Also take note, You should NOT apply to SRL members until you created a working script (Doing otherwise, normally leaves a bad stigma for members who will vote you in.)

I think this will help many members who are just thrown into the mix of tons of links/forums they don't really understand just yet.

***The youtube channel isn't done/near done yet but I will continue working on it, if anybody has videos they want to upload feel free to send them to me :) I will also be putting video tutorials such as YoJoHo's via favorites/shown in my videos but he still gets the view count. (It is just a link to his video through the channel)

I like your idea R4nd0m, should give NO excuse to not know how we operate here.

R4nd0m, i think that is a great idea. Hopefully we can get an admins input on this.

http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73573 - This is a great example, he didn't know he needed to make a script, when spoken to nicely, without swearing and other unacceptable conversation, he is willing to try.

Yes there are forum addons all over the internet for every type of software for automated welcome messages, very possible and good idea

I know what you mean, Jagex_Fagex. I think that SRL members are being too harsh with newcomers. It truly is frustrating when 9/10 people just want to come and leach scripts, but sometimes, like you said, they just need a nudge in the right direction instead of getting flamed.

And R4ndom, I like that idea too :)

What if instead of having an "open application process" set it to have minor requirements, like the Black Market? You must have x amount of posts OR x amount of longevity on SRL. Then possibly a short quiz asking how to do certain things that are specific to SRL. Then they have the right to post their script and their 2 cents on why they should be let in. That way the minor requirements and quiz would filter the leeches.

Edit:Possibly a 5-10 question quiz that random puts together that many questions from a database of questions. Questions like : Compiling errors, Meaning of TPAs, DTMs, etc. .

Edit2: Give them access to a time based group. "SRL Applicant". Which could give them the access to the application option and only that. After maybe a week they revert.

I like this, much like how rsbuddy had that small quiz to get into the developmental section.

Im thinking it could show that stuff and if they get it wrong they have to wait 1 week to apply again? (the quiz) rsbuddy did 24 hours

Ok so far we have:
New member PM
Small quiz for application
