I like "Late last year." It happened like 4 days ago…
I think free software has its place, but in some markets I'm not so sure. I would use microsoft office over open office 100% of the time, it just works so much better. The problem with some(I say some, not all!) free software is that it is not as user friendly as paid software is. In markets where user friendliness is a must, paid software will win most of the time because it is better at being user friendly. The reason, I assume, for this, is because the makers of paid software realize this and market specifically too it, while the makers of free software, more often than not, make it for themselves, computer experts, so it works for them, but most certainly doesn't work so well for my grandma.

Just read bits of the article. Kind of crazy as to where authorities want the country to be headed. No more freedom. :(

what's even more saddening is that paid software is usually massively overpriced. for instance, microsoft windows 7 is like £80 pounds something. it's just insane

So glad we have free open source software.
I know, lets start compiling our SRL scripts to bytecode and selling them..

Microsoft changing .doc to .docx and .ppt to .pptx in their latest versions of Office isn't "user friendly" at all. It's the opposite of user friendly.
That's another problem with proprietary software. They make irrational changes driven to protect their own profitability rather than user functionality.

Proprietary software doesn't bother me. I will just use TPB to get what I need. The bills it mentioned though..they scare me.

You can download the free compatibility pack to open .docx in older versions.

Too bad there is no such equivalent of Free Food or Free Rent.

Yep, software is almost unique in this respect that once its written, it can be duplicated very easily and cheaply.
The only way people even manage to sell is it by creating artificial barriers like binary-only distributions, compiling to bytecode, using an auth or a serial key.
In its natural state, software is as free (libre) as the air we breath.
