A Members Chatbox

What i am suggesting is a members chat box or a non members chat box for easy access for people to ask questions or just talk to each other…the reason why this community is so good is because its extremely helpful…Why not extend that help a little by having a chat box..

I like the idea of a shoutbox. Easy discussions without the use of an IRC client and/or using a separate tab/window for chatting the in IRC. Could chat and browse the forums at the same time! :D

The problem is not IRC…its the convenience of having one. Think about it…for a quick question a person has to log on to IRC….Why not just have them just post on the Shoutout box or a small chat box…that way the people can get to know each other a little more…and our community gets closer together…

I use Xchat, so it logs me in automatically to SRL whenever I start it :). I'm not opposed to a chat box though.

Yeah but the shout box can also be spammed the hell out of. I think this was brought up before and I guess it takes quite a bit of server bandwidth. Although SRL does have a much better server now. (Don't quote me just going by memory)

true and that is why i propose that we have chat box moderators or something like the forums mods being chat box mods…its just more convenient….and how much more bandwidth can a chatbox really take?
If anything you can attempt to make the chatbox(if public) require a certain post count to at least show that the person has been posting on the site and then there is solid evidence of them either being a good community member or a bad one(by posting spam etc) or just have one for SRL members/jrs.

It can take a lot.. Constant requests to and from server, but Narcle is right SRL did get a better server. That's why Wizzup? was asking if people wanted him to host a game server on it. Which if it can handle that, I believe it could handle a chatbox.
Mods would also definitely be needed, and maybe even have it locked unless one was presently monitoring.

That way, the newer members will be a little bit motivated to script…think about it…if someone could just be like "Why not try this or that" rather than go search on the forum…or try the IRC channel…

I'd normally say for them to go to IRC, but there are much too many retards who come to #SRL for simple help. 99% of questions asked there can be found searching the forums, and 99% of the active users in #SRL don't even use SRL anymore. ;)

Wizzup dislikes plugins, so IRC is probably best :p Though, I would like to have our own webclient.

I completely understands he hates plugins…but still making it more convenient for the newer members would be hell of a lot of help rather than them making a post about is this correct or where do i find this? or where do i find that…

Why not use an Iframe, and embed an IRC client then?

In the few times I joined the IRC, there's constantly inside jokes and conversations going on, and I feel like a complete stranger. I just kinda awkwardly waited until I felt like I could say something relevant. (which was hardly ever)
I just don't have tons of time on the computer, and I'd not like to spend it waiting at a chat-screen, hoping there's a conversation I can fit into. I'll hop on right now though.
I feel exactly like that.

I think chat box will either be filled by noobs who are asking for help and spamming, or there'll be just as many inside jokes

Well the forums are kind of that way right now in terms of spamming. Wouldn't it be better to have it in one box then in threads all over the forum? If you have chat box mods, this would be reduced somewhat too. I still feel like most of the usual inside jokes would stay in the IRC channel, because like you said the chat box would have mostly newbs asking for help, and a lot of members wouldn't want to have a typical IRC conversation in that environment.

I don't think that a chatbox would help much, people will still make stupid threads and posts and they would just have another way to make stupid comments.
When I was an administrator for a Nexus reseller website, a chatbox was introduced to the website by the owner of the website. When this move was done, all of the staff became very lazy and there was too much drama to handle.
I'm not sure this would be the best way to go.

Yea but honestly, even I'm sick of seeing threads such as My bot won't work? or What x, y? lol at least that way we can manage the clutter and make sure that the forum itself isn't being misused. Its just that IRC is like a nice place but you have those people that come out there and literally ask the most dumbest question…
Chatbox will cause a little bit of drama…but that also gives a chat box mod the authority to handle that drama, it would be that persons responsibility…and implication of that box with a couple of mods would be the best idea to avoid people from making leecher threads or stupid dumb question thread.
