Whatever you do, don't install any firmware higher than 3.55
As for the actual type you should use, depends on the model of your PS3, in the bottom there is a label with the series code for your PS3, should be careful since not all CFW are compatible with certain models and will brick your console if you use an incompatible one.

I've got one of the first PS3. The 60GB model. So, not that recent. I'm sure there won't be any problem.

I also got the Original Launch Model 60GB with CFW
Series code - CEBH1000
This type actually gets brick by 4/5 of the main CFWs, I would not even go with the ones that are not popular.
If you got the same code in the back, and you sure it is the launch model, your PS3 would ONLY be compatible with Kmeaw, specifically Kmeaw 3.55 and you would need to update up to 3.55 OFW in order to install Kmeaw.
Either way you should confirm this with a guide, just google Kmeaw CFW.
As for the PS3, I suggest you upgrade the internal HHD to a 600GB, should not cost more than 60-70 bucks and its 10 times larger since backups usually range from 5-35GB, yes l, one of them was 35GB GoWIII, but eitherway, HHD is require to make giving up Online worth it. Oh and good luck with the cheap screws Sony uses on the harddrive base, I actually stripped 1-2 of them and was total pain to fix ='[ Be very careful with the screws, I suggest installing new better quality screws for easier switch in case your HHD dies.

Series code - CECHC04
Thanks for all the information Bud. I'll search on google Kmeaw CFW.
Also, thanks for the tip of getting a higher Internal HDD :)

you can buy a mod chip with a switch that u can make a case mod for that allows for either running homebrew or playing online with official software.

I was scared when I first did it but bang, done it twice, mainly because you need original fw before you switch hard drive.
Do up to the step where you install 3.55 OFW and stop
Switch HHD first, it will ask for OFW, after it has been switched, install CFW
I had to do
3.45 -> 3.55 OFW -> 3.55 Kmeaw -> 3.55 OFW -> HHD Replace -> 3.55 OFW -> 3.55 Kmeaw.
HHD switch must be done on original firmware, might as well do it when you first get 3.55 OFW instead of risking a reverse
