How do you ground yourself?

While working with computers / opening your computer up / performing surgery on a robot, what do you do to ground yourself? Do you have one of those wristbands or do you simply gently touch the screwdriver you have to the metal case of the computer/robot?

I personally do the screwdriver 'bit and rub it VERY gently on the metallic part of the case. But I was thinking I might invest in a decent wristband for grounding myself and not risk frying up 2.3k USD of a new computer.

It's never really dry here so static isn't that big a problem, I usually just touch the case.

Same thing for me at all the places I've been. One thing I do though is take off any rings I may happen to be wearing at the time. For instance my wedding ring.

if you do not ground yourself there is a change that you can send a static shock through the computer which can damage parts

What does grounding mean, though? Never understood, especially now that people are talking about screwdrivers and wristbands. :p

Read a bit of that page, still couldn't figure out how it was related.

It means to dissipate the electric charge that you accumulate naturally over time by touching most common objects like the carpet or your chair.

Or something like that anyway. Just off the top of my head. :)

Alright, fair enough. I always thought it was meant in the literal sense (as in the current would travel underground, I guess), so I wasn't sure what touching a wrist band had to do with the Earth. :p But fair enough.

These are the wristbands google.com/m/search?client=ms-opera-mini&q=static+wrist+strap&channel=new&site=images&tab=wi&ei=0ErnToiaLsLY8AO8ngE&sa=N&ei=0ErnToiaLsLY8AO8ngE&ved=0CAMQ1wY

Wearing them removes the chance of for example frying you new memory stick when upgrading it acts as the earth wire you get in a plug

Don't forget to take off your pimp rings!

As for me, I skid through the carpet with socks on and touch everything I can inside the computer so I know I'm grounded.

Oh physics, how I hate you. Yeah… The wristband definitely works wonders.

never have static anywhere here, so probably don't even need to do that
