Nominating Gingrich would be the best gift that Republicans could ever give the Democrats. He had to resign from his position as Speaker of the House in disgrace, after paying a $300k fine for breaking ethics rules. In earlier debates he said that anyone who took money from Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac should be jailed. It has since come out that Gingrich's lobbying firm took over $1.6 million from Freddie Mac in the past few years.
Ron Paul is consistent and is willing to stand up for principles of freedom even when it puts him into awkward political discussions. But his flavor of freedom is fundamentally incompatible with our current system of government.
He has called for allowing states to legalize all drugs, including meth and heroin. That's fine in Ron Paul's fantasy world, where people are given personal freedom and must then accept personal responsibility, but that's not the world we live in. In our world, a state would legalize Heroin then the federal government would be handing out disability checks and free health care to all the addicts. It just doesn't work.
To get anywhere near Ron Paul's goal, the first step is to roll back the system of government dependency we have now. Obama is planning to campaign in exactly the opposite direction, with bigger government, more dependency, and less personal freedom and responsibility. So, that puts Ron Paul supporters into a bind. If Ron Paul gets nominated then gets beaten by Obama in a general election, the country will actually lurch much farther AWAY from Ron Paul's principles than if another Republican had beaten Obama.
I think Repubs need to rally around the stronger candidate for the general election. Someone who can start to roll back much of the harm that Obama has done. That paves the way for Ron or Rand Paul to run in the future and actually have a chance to achieve what they have in mind.
Also, following up on my last post, Obama just held a 40 minute speech and press conference on the Iraq withdrawal yesterday. He thanked American soldiers, recognized American casualties, thanked Iraqi soldiers and their casualties, he even thanked the Iraqi people for their "resolve", and gave a "special shout out to" his pal Joe Biden for his work there.
But once again he completely left out Bush, who made withdrawal possible and even put the timeline for withdrawal in place before leaving office. Obama truly is a selfish egotistical creep, which he proves time and time again.
