Bring back the SRL Wiki?

I could set up a new mediawiki in a bit. Do we have any use for it still? I'd really like it to be kept up to date. The huge advantage is that others can easily update tutorials that they didn't make.

Obviously we don't need it for a scripting reference, but we could have pages that explain concepts like RadialWalking, SPS, what SRL is, what Simba is, and so on. It should be an addition to the official documentation, not a copy. So, do we need this?

PS: I don't think it would be useful to restore the old wiki, would it?
PSPS: I'm not sure if I could (or want to) tie it to SRL accounts again.

I'm thinking it'd be better if SRL had a real website, not just a forum.
There could be a section for all that stuff. The wiki template isn't needed, I think.
I mean, you can still have keywords for articles, for searching.

But how would you do collaborative editing? What I really liked about the Wiki is that people would just create an article about things they knew / ran into.

I'm not sure what you mean with a complete website?

Well, I don't think free editing is that important here. There wouldn't be that many articles, and they wouldn't change much over time.

By a whole website I mean we should have a nice, clean page that opens when users open www.villavu.com (I'd really like to get srl-forums.com back). There would a couple big buttons such as "What is SRL?" "What is Simba?" "SRL articles" "Forums". SRL articles would have links to things we would have on a wiki, such as "Radial walk", "SPS", "TPA", "DTM", "Bitmaps" and other major things that people use when scripting. I don't think we need an article for every small thing, they can be learned from the tutorials in forums. Articles would just explain some concepts and ideas of the more complex techniques.

I like what marpis is talking about and it would be a good place to have the links to all the main sources of information. It would give us a better first impression to new users. It'd also make finding infomation easier for the new users. We could have a newcomers note's section on the front page pointing to all the things they should look to for different information.

I personally think that its much easier to make a tutorial look better inside a wiki than it is on a forum, but unless all the tutorials are converted or all future tutorials are made in wiki format, it wouldnt work. Thus no reason for a wiki to exist.

I think a Wiki would be great, but I think we should then get rid of tutorials on the forum. If the Wiki is up to date, we shouldn't need a tutorial section, and if someone wants to write a guide, they can expand on a current Wiki article or create a new one.

Only thing is, it will be a lot of work converting all the useful tutorials to Wiki format. Not sure if I would want to do that with my scripting guide.

I agree with this.
If there are errors or people want to make comments about the guide or tutorial, we can just link them back to the thread? I dont agree with getting rid of the tutorial section. It allows for a different kind of collaborative help. Anyone can jump on a thread and help out, but we would need permissions to edit wikies.

Im siding with noidea here… threads are interactive when need to be..

I think we should have either or, not both.

there is technically a way to comment on wikis, though it is less apparent than it is on the forums. But i think that the effort that would have to go into properly having the tutorials in wiki form (which like i said would imo be the best) would be infeasible. And that is really the only good reason that I could see a wiki being useful in the slightest.

I'd like the Wiki to be re-opened :) It's always useful, and even though we may not be able to think of much use for it now, I'm sure someone down the line would and expand on it. :)

Like I said there are people that would gladly write the wiki for us. I could dedicate some time to the wiki. Like I do the Docs(which I need to start working on again).

E: you could have a Wiki Admin group that has the ability to approve changes to the wiki(ie SSRL+ or Mod+ could have approval rights.) and have just those users on the Wiki database. Then have it set to where anyone can submit an article or a change. Pretty sure this is possible iirc.
