Anti-Gold-Farming Measures
Technical
Anti-Gold-Farming Measures

Today sees the latest in our series of initiatives to stamp out botting, gold farming and dishonest play in RuneScape.

It’s a sad fact that the vast majority of gold farming activity takes place in the free game, where it is possible to create disposable accounts that can be used to generate in-game money and send it on for illicit real-world trade in defiance of our rules. Today’s measures will reduce the effectiveness of this practice by a factor of 100, to show these people once and for all that ruining your game is not only unacceptable, but also a waste of their time.

From today onwards, newly created free to play accounts will be subject to a number of trade limitations, consisting of:

New free-to-play accounts can only give away gold coins or items, or make a trade with an imbalance in the recipient’s favour, to the value of 25000 coins per 24 hours. This limitation also applies to drop trades.
New free-to-play accounts can make Duel Arena bets with no greater imbalance than 25000 coins per 24 hours.
We have also made a change to Wilderness PvP, where noted items will only appear to the original carrier when dropped upon death; not the killer. This affects all accounts – not just ones subject to the limitations above.

The last thing we want is to make trading difficult for our long-standing and bustling free-to-play community, so existing free-to-play accounts will be unaffected. What’s more, there is no limit to the value of gifts that can be received by a new free-to-play account, so there’s nothing to stop a new player from receiving a helping hand from a high-levelled friend. Needless to say, balanced trades between players are not a problem, either.

The limitations will remain in effect until the affected account purchases membership. Subscribing will remove these restrictions permanently, even if the subscription later ends and is not renewed.

These measures are a decisive next blow in our ongoing battle against botting and gold farming. We are fully committed to stamping out this insidious form of cheating to ensure you the fair game experience that you deserve.

Mhm… I'm not impressed, all my accounts have been or are members.. 5€/account for a revenue which is potentially much greater…?

I think Jagex is a bit greedy.

I delayed trading iron and coal to my bots just yesterday : d
Oh, already created accounts can trade.

Well, this is slightly annoying. But seeing as I still have a bunch of accounts that qualify as "existing f2p accounts", this shouldn't bother me too much.

Especially since I don't really do RWTing or anything.

many gold farms have already mule accounts

it will be harder in the future but still this will not stop gold farming

WOW im glad i have over 100+ f2p accounts :D

I can seriously see a business in this now. A year from now people will want my accounts and I can sell them for very good price just because they were created before this update AND the email update.

Just a matter of time.

They are again forcing us to buy members. Can't they just lift the restriction after X time??

The loophole to this (and the intention of jackex) is of course: bot your asses of at f2p, and as soon as the account is valuable enough, buy members :)

And there you have it folks. Is it just me or has Jagex taken a definite swing back towards money hungry lately? For a while it seemed like they were easing up a bit then suddenly off we go in the opposite direction.

question.
does that noted pvp thing affect members?
so if i take out noted items and die i can retrieve them?

anyone test this?

Oh well. I guess the 80 accounts I spent a whole day making 5 years ago will come handy :P

My ~800 accounts just gained some value?

Couldn't you still just take valuable unnoted items to wilderness and die?

I'm glad for this update. Jagex killed two birds with one stone with this update: get more people to buy a membership and injure the profitability of "trashbots" (lvl 3 bots).

I don't really care about them getting more "money hungry", I can afford to pay 5€ a month for my main and the f2p chars I bot with are just for fun, not so that I can someday transfer the goods to some other acc.

Lol, I'd just bot enough to have RS $$ to buy membership, and then tell the gold buyer to use that as payment method. Duuuh. And it only needs to be done once…. jagex really thought this through - well, if they'll abuse our game, at least they'll pay $5 for it!

I have a ton of old accounts I never use anymore. Guess it's time to bring some out of retirement.

Eh you guys don't get too excited. If anything the price of older accounts will go up the price of one month of membership or less. Because it says after you buy membership the limit is permemantly lifted.

Still..? $3-$4 an account just for registering… some people have thousands of accounts in reserve. I know I do :)

Old accounts will need to have run tut isle… Just reserving a name isn't enough. You will need some playtime on these accounts. Nontutted accounts count as "new" accounts :D

That is the standard RS update cycle: Push out an update, then push out a number of fixes without warning/explanation.

There is no tutorial island. You start in lumby.

I thought accounts created before all of the tutorial island updates had to go thru the original tutorial island still?

Has anybody tried logging into one of their many accounts yet?
