The end of Color bots soon?

Failure

2011-11-05 02:20:55

From: Jacmob
Why have you put an end to RSBuddy’s bot client?

Bots have changed the gameplay of RuneScape. With the use of bots becoming increasingly widespread since the introduction of free trade, and the recent announcements by Jagex, it is clear that bots have become flagrantly detrimental to the game. If you’re like any of us and you enjoy playing RuneScape, you’ll have noticed that bots are anti-social and make the time you spend playing feel diminished in worth. At the same time, bots are abused heavily by gold farmers to ruin the game to a significant extent only for their profit. We hope to assist in the selfless movement by Jagex in fixing this problem and hope that you will join us in playing the game with real people.

To some this will seem like a quick change of heart. See my interview with Ability44 on YouTube.

Is this the end of all botting in RuneScape?

Yes. I am confident that you will not see the return of major bot clients to RuneScape, and that the small number of simple 'auto-clickers' and 'screen-scrapers' that remain will be dealt with very soon.

Another bot site says they’ll be up soon; why shouldn’t we believe them?

The other bot sites out there may claim for a bit longer that they will fix their bots within the next few days or weeks: Had I decided to release RSBuddy 1.5 to the public, it would have required another overhaul just a few days later. The fact that no other botting sites had any update ready by the end of last week shows how exceedingly far behind they are. Don’t hold your breath.

I know another huge MMO that hasn’t dealt with bots; what makes RuneScape different?

Removing bots from the game requires both commercial investment and the time of talented developers with other updates to work on. I haven’t seen any other company willing to take that hit; it requires a huge amount of care for the game we’re here for.

I used RSBuddy on my account, am I going to be banned?

The information we have on customers and users is private and won’t be used to ban any accounts. We hope that you have come to understand why botting has no place in the game and take this opportunity to become part of the RuneScape community.

I purchased a premium script, am I entitled to a refund?

If you purchased a script within 7 days of the update last Tuesday we will happily refund your purchase on request. Any purchases made before this time are not eligible for refunds. Information on subscription changes is available on our subscriptions page.

This is the end for bots, not for you!

It’s not only you that doesn’t have a bot client to use. RuneScape is a social game for humans to play. If you feel that there was anything botting did to keep you interested in the game, please join the discussion of what updates would remove any need for them.

F.A.Q.

Were you threatened with a lawsuit?

Nope. RSBuddy is currently taking legal action against another site though.

Did you actually finish RSBuddy v1.5?

Yes (and brought it to RuneFest).

Will screen scraping ('colour') bots be taken down soon?

Yes. It's good to leave the easiest to deal with last.

Why the count-down?

We needed time to prepare for this announcement and couldn't say anything in the mean time.

Did anyone else notice a complete restructure of the way that jacmob forms his sentences? Perhaps this is not even him anymore? I couldn't really see jagex wanting to take on that role but perhaps a partner of theirs or even another community leader?

Also a note of taking out colour based bots… First we had Autorune, then that broke so we had Scar (or simba/srl now), that never truely broke, but there have been countless other bots broken over the years. So if disabling all bots is truely their goal, why wasnt it done before when they claimed that it was their goal?

would it not be as simple as removing safe mode, blending colors and adding graphical details? Not sounding pessimistic, and not saying that would completely destroy color botting or anything, but safe mode is a vital part of our bots success.

They can't do that, yet at least. If they want to make the game fair, they can't force higher CPU graphics to someone who has a crappy computer. I doubt they would force that on their players just to stop us.

I believe I said this many times.. and I really believe it will work.. Day time, night time in runescape.. and all the times inbetween like sunset, etc.. Not only that but they can also remove the black outline on all objects.. then what?

That would screw colour bots for sure.. Imagine having to make DTM's/Bitmaps for every second of a day for a bot to run.. then what? Colour bots would be screwed.

We'd figure out the levels at which they alter their items based on the time of day and then we'd make an algorithm to calculate the time of day and edit our colors and tolerances based on the time of day.

Why would that stop us? We would just make autocoloring functions for stuff. Day/night time would only change the lightness right? Hue and saturation would stay pretty much the same. I don't see the big deal.

Edit: And yea like Yago said we would make algorithms to calculate the lightness..

I suspect we would develop more advanced auto-color functions?

The safe-mode removal is more of a concern for me.. They already stated somewhere that the minimal settings are basically like safe-mode… I think they may remove it soon, but I hope not.

What you need to know is this:

We at SRL play against the rules. Thats all we do. There is no copyrighted material on this forum. We don't decompile and reverse engineer the client either. We just look at the screen, like every normal player does. Nothing special and nothing secret going on @ SRL. We just count colors and wait… We are not illegal, in any way.

Also, there is no script selling/buying @ SRL, so no money comes in. Also, we try to blend in. We do not mass-exploit spots and try to make sure we are not a bother to Jageks. That is, has always been and always will be our philosophy.

Consider us the Masterthieves, the Guild of Robin Hoods. I am sure there is nothing going on here that is really courtworthy. Keep it that way!

Kaitnieks stopped updating AutoRune in 2003 but eventually sold the source to a few people and it was leaked. Some people had a working version as late as 2007 and there are still a few people with it working today though they keep it private. It's just very hard to make a packet/proxy bot for RS2 and even harder to keep it working when Jagex update.

From what I remember SCAR was created before RS2 came out, some time in 2003. AutoRune had just been temporarily broken thanks to an update by Jagex. Kaitnieks said this in the "Little Black Book of RuneScape Cheating":

I made another cheat, a clicker named SCAR (Shite Compared to AutoRune). There are 2 reasons why I made it. First - to keep cheaters busy so they don't want to do scamming and second - to prove Nick Sherlock, the AutoMiner programmer, that writing a clicker is much much easier than something like AutoRune unlike what he writes in his home page.

There you are, you learned some RuneScape cheating history.

I still have AutoRune 4.20 and 2.80's source code lol, sadly they don't work any more. 2.80 doesn't even compile because it depends lots of third-party programs which no longer exist.

Your correct about everything other than people having a working version of the software up until 2007, or currently for that matter. I will believe it when I see a working version in use. The thing about 'private' bots is they are only ever private for a very short term, EVERYTHING gets leaked. Also anyone who has the know how to even attempt to make an older version run has either left the scene completely or moved on to a method that has better results with less work.

Color is here to live, as well as exact item location. You always will have an exact location of stuff in the inventory, unless they start a random inventory shuffle, which would be annoying to the users. I can say I am enjoying being able to cut down trees again, and not have 100+ people in the same location!
