I don't know (Or even talk to) (m)any of y'all anymore. I just figured that I would let some of the newer members of SRL know what this community has meant to me and how it has effected my life.

I came here as many of y'all did, I am sure. My parents had restricted how much time I was allowed to spend on the computer, and more specifically on Runescape, so I needed a way to keep my account up without being on the computer. Well I stumbled upon SCAR from Sythe (Yes, I know), back in the days of Starblaster100's legendary script. I used that for powertraining and stuff for a while. Then I actually quit Runescape, due to actually getting a life and whatnot.

Then I came back (this is a common thing with me), couldn't remember my information for my old account, so I made this one. Well this time around I decided to try out scripting myself. Back then RS had unlimited inventories in stores of certain items, and you could make a ton of money from raw bird meat thanks to summoning, so I made a script for that, and really enjoyed it. I got members. Made a lot of other scripts that I never released, and made a lot of scripts that I never finished (Like a lot of other people I am sure).

Eventually I made RAD, which I thought would be awesome (And I intended on starting something like MSI, though that project went to much more competent and intelligent people), but that was kinda a flop due to me not testing it enough and just generally being kinda crappy. Well at this time, high school was in full-swing, and I had a lot of extra curriculars(I am 6'5" and pretty athletic, I played basketball, football, and had a lot of classes which I was expected to get all A's in), I didn't have much time for SRL, so I kinda left.

Since then I never have really come back and started scripting, but I have always been lurking and occasionally I would put in my input. Despite all of that though, thanks to SRL I knew that I wanted to do something with computers, and probably programming. I had an idea for a website, but I didn't know how to do any of that, but was quite interested in learning, and knew that I would enjoy it because of how much I enjoyed scripting for SCAR.

A guy loosely associated to my basketball team (Who was kinda creepy, I won't get into it), was a web developer and he was looking for some help. So I decided to work for him and learn PHP, MySQL, and all that good stuff. Meanwhile I was thinking about college and what to do for that. I was home-schooled almost my entire life, so I am used to alternative means of education. My mother found a method of college called "Accelerated Distance Learning".

Anyway, basically you take tests for college credits, and transfer all of your credits to an accredited college and graduate, it takes less time and money. So I opted for it. I was unhappy with my current job, so I had been looking around, and the company who coached me through college and that process of getting credit without going to classes, emailed me and told me that there was a job opening, so I emailed back.

Eventually they offered me a payed internship. I am currently making almost $9 an hour, before taxes, and getting a free education, I will have a fully accredited bachelor's degree by the end of 2012. At which time I will be 19 (I am currently 18) I have started learning Ruby and started coding in Ruby On Rails, and now have about a year and a half of programming experience in PHP (We have to support legacy systems that use PHP), and a few months in Rails. All thanks to this community in sparking my interest in programming.

After I have written all of this I realize that most people won't actually read all of this, and it sounds like I am bragging. I just wanted to inform all of you who make this community what it is, of the impact that you have had in my life, and to thank you.

You shouldn't.. too much loli.

But I read all of that, it was a nice read and I am also glad you are doing well. Be careful you are not scammed by these "get educated fast" scenarios!

Cool story. My situation is a lot like yours; though, I never left. :p SRL is what got me interested in programming though.

Bachelors at 19, nice! $9/hr isn't too bad! Just wait till you start making the big bucks. I can see a pretty bright future in front of you, if you have a bachelors at 19 I think companies should be throwing themselves at you!

good luck bud!

Yeah, the best part is my college is payed for. I live with my parents still, so I am saving up a ton of money, so I will have no debt, and quite a good sum saved up actually. I may be moving out with one of my best friends in January though. Thank you very much though.

Mine is a similar story :)

Because of SRL I am getting my BSc with a dual major in applied mathematics and computing science. And because of classes I took at the university before i changed programs and universities I am on the web development team for Hackito Ergo Sum 2012 :D

Depends, I am kind of a slacker, but I try to spend 3 hours or so studying a night and a couple each day on the weekend, so probably around 15-20 hours a week (Though I rarely actually reach that number).

Thanks Zyt3x, I have missed this forum. I'll probably lurk a bit more often.

I'm really new here but I already know what you mean when you are talking about a great community. I actually surprised even myself by reading the whole thing, very well written. And a nice story. You seem like a guy who isn't afraid to work hard for the things you want, bachelors at 19 is pretty awesome. Good luck with your future! :)

What do you mean by this? Like how people from here have been affected in a positive way in their current lives?

Thank you, and you are welcome :)

I know that this community has had a great impact on most, if not all of it's long-term members. This is a great environment to learn, and while it does have a lot of internet-typical stereotypes, most of the people here are good people who at this point don't even care about "getting ahead" in a stupid game, but want to learn about computers and coding and form friendships.
