Hey can you guys help me choose which engineering career path i should take

Its either out of Civil or Computer Engineering.

There are alot jobs for Civil at the moment here in NZ / AUS , i also like computers and thing to do with technology and interests me very much especially the latest graphene discovery and fibreoptics.

This is very hard for me to choose .

Do what you like more.

You have a lot better chances of thriving in the long run in a career you find enjoyable, than in a career that you chose only because statistics told you it was the "wiser" choice.

I am doing computer engineering because that is where my passion is. I enjoy learning about computers and how the work/operator and I find it an always progressing field. Also, I feel as that degree has so many different potential applications (robotics, computers, computer components, programming, etc…) so much can be done with that degree that is more interesting to me.

The coin toss isn't actually to decide what to pick, it's so YOU know what you want.

At the last second you're supposed to have a hope for which one you'd rather show up and that's the one you pick.

You do know that you can change your course after you get into the uni if you don't like it? So its not like you're stuck forever. The hard part is only getting into the Uni you want, after that its easy to change courses(atleast thats true in VIC)

Exactly what KingKong said. If I were you (I get to choose in a year or so ;)) I'd go to some different engineering firms and ask to shadow someone there for a day, both for civil and computer engineering. Have fun!

If you're seriously stuck between the two go with Civil, otherwise if you like the other one more go with it.

Civil > Computer imho

I don't understand why you are asking us. It is your life, do the course you want to do, follow the career you want to do. Do whichever one you will enjoy more.

Civil Engineers get laid off a lot less than computer engineers because of their vitality to society and infrastructure.

But why Civil and not Mechanical, Industrial, Petroleum (ok maybe not Petroleum)…

Originally had the sentence say "Computer Engineers get laid off more" but then decided to change it around because that wasn't exactly correct and forgot to change both.

I just graduated with a civil engineering degree! Hurah! so go civil! lol.

(warning, long boring life story to follow)
But seriously, I wasn't lucky enough to get an internship during school, with the hard economic times every company is looking to hire anyone with experience (so frustrating seeing the retards you went to school with getting jobs when they have half your GPA….just because they lucked out and got an internship early before their stupidity was blatantly apparent). Anyway, I seriously applies for 3-4 jobs a day for about a month after graduation, then I got dead end jobs around town to pass the time. About 2 months after graduation I got a random call from a company that said they found my resume on Monster and wanted to do a skype interview, I said sure, did it in about a week and didn't hear anything back from them (like every other interview, lol).
3 weeks or so after that they called me back and said they'd like to fly me to houston for a better interview. The next week I was on the plane. They hired me and I'm now a Field Engineer workin on oil fields.
They were trying to hire for Electrical Engineers, but I was kinda close to where they were hiring for (North Dakota) so they rang me up. It's not a tough job using any of my fun engineering equations, but it's a good paying job with a stable company. I've got a brand new (2012, 2 miles on it when I got it) truck to drive around in.

Eventually I'd like to get back into Civil engineering, I really love Hydraulics and Hydraulic structures (surface water flow), which is a solid civil engineering skill (some overlap into environmental engineering, but they are very similar)

you never know where you'll end up I guess, lol..sorry for typing so long :(

hey im in electrical engineering and where i am yuo have take computer engineering classes until third year. i can tell you that i had zero interest in those courses and it absolutely sucked. however i have friends in computer engineering who really enjoy it. if you dont have the interest to put in some hard work to learn the stuff take civil. i say that only because (here in canada) civil is known as the easiest form of engineering. (simple civil) lol
