SRL vs the World?

Hey there,

I follow the RS forums quite actively and the General section there has more or less been taken over by "bots are everywhere" threads. That made me wonder:

a) How big of a part do You think SRL plays in these threads and in the reasons people keep making them? Simply put, do you think SRL has a big effect on Runescape?

b) What are the pros and cons of using a smaller/bigger botting program? (Account safety, possibility to get banned, effectiveness etc.) By size I mean how widely the bot is used.

Free discussion and personal opinions, no need for any hard statistics.

I think SRL does not play a big part in the problems botting is causing in runescape, because (to my knowledge) these scripts are used more to level up characters than flood the market with items and selling the gold later on for real money. I also think it's a lot safer to use "smaller" bots whether it be about account safety or trying to stay unbanned.

Discuss. :)

There have only been 25 unique IPs in the past few days that have used a script that uses Reflection in any way. A few of those being in dynamic pools, and a few being web spiders. Not that many people use pure-color scripts. Based on that information I doubt SRL has that large of an impact on Runescape, vs any of the Java bots.

Cool how can you tell?

0.1% contribution, nothing really because Jagex don't give two shits.

Doesn't matter how popular a bot is as long as you take all the precautions.

Nah. Someone posted a thread awhile ago, where powerbot/rsbuddy were down at the moment, and drayor willows were nearly empty, and all worlds had noticablely less people logged in.

That? The numbers are off compared to today, I'm sure. Some worlds (Soul Wars worlds, ZMI worlds, etc.) get down to less than 100 players after updates.. I saw at least half a dozen f2p worlds with less than 100 players for awhile after the ROTM update. It's pretty obvious that there are tens of thousands of bots in RS at any time.

Also after the ROTM update the number of players dropped by about 100k for awhile. That seems pretty extreme, but I would guess there's a pretty close number to that. Maybe 60-80k. Hard to say for sure. When Harry got those numbers there were far less spambots (nearly none, afaik), which account for quite a lot of bots.

Anyway.

SRL doesn't affect anything, really. If RSBuddy and PowerBot and iBot and whatever else people use were all gone, and SRL stayed, there'd probably be about 100-200 people using it at any time, maybe more. Even still, that's only a bot or two per world, which is absolutely nothing. Even if there were 500 people botting at one time that's only three bots per world.

I agree alot with what you're saying, Mr Bottomtooth. You're right about us having an impact on Runescape; we're invisible, even when there wasn't 2 million Java bots out there, we always were invisible.

Also about the scripts, you're right, it seems like the majority of ours are aimed to better our character without affecting others. I try to stay on this basis when coming up with an idea for a script, although I do have a few that compete with other bots for personal gain, that's surely outweighed by the number of scripts I've made that have no impact on legitimate players.

To answer your question about the pros and cons of a smaller community, I would have to say there almost no disadvantages to a small community. Simba is great. Not to mention that SRL/MSI is constantly being maintained. Also, the scripts here are generally less repetitive and more unique. By that I mean that since the amount of users using the scripts at SRL are relatively low compared to that of Nexus or RsBot, we are theoretically at a lesser risk of being banned since our scripts aren't being abused and at the bare minimum, are slightly different. In my opinion, the only 'real disadvantage' to a small community is the lack of leechers using our scripts. In the sense that individual coders do not get as much feedback as they would at other communities. However, they get less spam/useless posts as well :p

tl;dr SRL is invisible and because of that we are quite advantageous.
