"JumpTo" Thread Links

Dgby714 asked me this a few days ago, and I really like the idea. Would be VERY useful for long tutorials/threads. Basically you have a tag that includes a "keyword" that will jump to another part of the same post. So,

Table of Contents:
  • [JumpTo="ScriptingStandards"]Scripting Standards[/JumpTo] (Clicking would jump to the section on scripting standards.

[Keyword="ScriptingStandards"]Scripting Standards[/Keyword]
  • Scripting standards explained here.

I'm not sure on the correct terminology, but I'm sure you get the idea. Thoughts?

In HTML its called an anchor,

<a href="#anyword">Jump to any place</a>

<a name="anyword">Jump to this place</a>

e: you could also do it on different web pages:
<a href="PageB.html#Here">Go to Here on Page B</a>

From: vB forums
Instructions

First, you need to create two new bbcodes. Start by going to:
Admin CP -> Custom BB Codes -> Add New BB Code

Then fill in the relevant fields using these settings and parameters:

Title: Anchor link
Tag: jumpto
Replacement: <a href="#{option}">{param}</a>
Example: [jumpto=aname]This takes you to a new location within a post[/jumpto]
Description: The [jumpto] tag allows you to jump to another location within a post, usually used for long posts with headings and/or sections of interest. This tag <b>must</b> be used in conjunction with the [aname] tag. One is not functional without the other.
Use {option}: Yes
Click Save

Create another bbcode using these settings and parameters:

Title: Named anchor link
Tag: aname
Replacement: <a name="{option}">{param}</a>
Example: [aname=aname]This is where you jump to[/aname]
Description: The [aname] tag is used in conjunction with the <a href="#jumpto">[jumpto]</a> tag. One is not functional without the other.
Use {option}: Yes
Click Save

There seems to be an anchor tag in vB, but I'm not sure how it works..

We need the GARS plugin!!! *cough*Wizzup?*cough*

Ive been asking (begging) wizzup to get it for years! We used to have it back at the old srl-forums site. It had anchors aswell as the ability to do pages which was super awesome for long multi section tutorials.

;) I'm sure if people would pay for it he'd have no problem installing it.

I, however, don't see why we'd need to buy it. To me it doesn't seem too fantastic.. I'm sure it could be recreated by people here. :)

I believe you could easily make another tag for outside pages, or add some logic (not sure how much logic you can have for BBC tags) to what I posted, for it to work as needed.

Wizzup?

I don't feel like installing more plugins now, Hobbit. (I tried to do Ho+Tab, lol)

BTW, Coh3n. Sphinx can do these references (it produces html). So if you write it in sphinx and did an external link I suppose you could use it.

I see how this is useful, but I don't think it'll be added that soon. Unless someone else feels like adding it. (You can bother nielsie and see how he feels about it)

I like this, it will help me find topics easier in Coh3n's enormous tutorials :p
