New scripting tool

Hi all,

I'm sick and tired of SMART/Simba (read PS) not functioning as they should. All the weird crashes and stuff really pisses me off. Therefore, I've started to develop completely new tool written in C++. As for the embedded scripting language, I've chosen Lua. There's several benefits for that. For example it can be compiled to byte code on the fly which makes it super fast.

I'll setup a GIThub later from where you can download the source.

Can you explain a little bit more what it does do :) (Is it like New SMART?)

Good luck with your developing. If you need some testing help, count me in!

It does exactly the same thing as Simba/SMART. But more efficiently with different scripting language (no more pascal script). Also, creating completely new solution for RS client reflection instead of SMART.

Lua… ;__;

Why not just work on MML which I think is Simba in Python? Much better I think..

So are you going to create some site for this project? (Yes I know that you host sauce in GITHub).

And will there be Includes or something? Sorry for my little knowledge about this kind of stuff :)

I like Lua. Lua is a neat little language that combines Algol family syntax with the Lisp idea of basic but powerful language constructs. So why not?

No, I won't create site for this. I'll just release the code/binaries here.

Is work still being done on rutis and lape? Continue that? Pretty much the same thing you are doing now

Why not use SCAR?

Probably the same reason as: "Why use someone else's script when you can make your own, exactly how you want it". There's always a certain satisfaction you get from using your own work as opposed to someone else's.

Or, atleast, that's why I believe he's doing it. :p I always support new ideas. :)

Because Scar too uses PS, and that's where his issue lies?

This sounds good :) New ideas to the table are always welcome in my eyes. If you ever need any testers count me in, I will help in any way I can. Good luck with your project.

P.S Sounds like your a bit of a wizkid to me haha

Perhaps instead of making your own, why not talk to Nielsie about LAPE? Its a great project and progressing nicely, but he needs help! Its written in Lazarus/FPC which is muuuuch different than PS. Just a thought. :)

Also, you may want to talk to nxtitle (Keith on IRC) about this. He already started/tried something like this!

Unless he meant Titan, which as for Titan, it is in Beta and from what I've seen has less but worse bugs in it.

SCAR 4.00 (Titan) does not, nope.

Compiling to bytecode doesn't automatically result in fast code. Pascal Script compiles to bytecode, too. LuaJit, however, compiles to machine code :)

How about a Clojure based macroing system then?

To be honest,

sounds like a very fair solution. You'll be rewriting a lot from scratch, some of which took me and Raymond months to write.
It's fun to make stuff yourself, but it's more useful and still fun to build on work by others, especially if that work is already very complete and stable. Why not use the existing library for most stuff? I'm sure lua has something similar to ctypes in Python; so interfacing with it even without any C++ should be possible too.

PS: It isn't Simba in Python, it's the Simba ``MML'' library exported to a C-type DLL so pretty much any language can use it. I just wrote some python code that uses it and called the python code ``pyMML''.

+1, work on libMML

For everyone telling him to work on libmml, read his OP. He wants to make an alternative to SMART and libmml is not an alternative to SMART, it lets people write scripts in different programming languages but it still uses SMART. Anyway, @OP wish you all the best.

You're a little wrong.

He said that he's not happy with PS, and libMML is a direct alternative to PS, except you don't need to recreate everything.

Why would libMML force a user to use smart?

The crashes have nothing to do with Simba/SMART. It's reflection.

Do you know of anything else that we can use instead of SMART with libmml? I don't, and probably most people here don't either, which means people going to have to use it with SMART.

What? I don't think you understand what libMML is..

You know what MML is, yes? I assume so, as you're trying to recreate it. libMML is simply a DLL of MML which can be used be any language, essentially. There is already a (very underdeveloped) pyMML, and there could easily be a luaMML, if you pleased.

But, it'd be best to work on libMML itself before trying to add more languages.

The Runescape client? :p

I should make a big sticky about what MML actually is. It's Simba's core functionality. Finding windows, targetting them, grabbing their bitmaps, performing analysis of the bitmaps (findcolor, ocrr, findbitmap, finddtm, etc).
If you'd strip the ``mml'' out of Simba you'd be left with a program has a code editor with auto-completion, extensions and the ability to run starts (but the scripts wouldn't even be able to do a findcolor). libMML is an (somewhat incomplete) library the implements the MML functionality. The library can be loaded from just about any language thus effectively exporting the MML features to any language.

In other words, MML does a lot. You could easily write a GUI around MML with pretty much the same functionality as Simba; except for the GUI features Simba has, settings, extensions, colour picker, etc. (Although the colour picker does heavily depend on the mml)

I didn't understand superuser wanted to write an application like SMART. If that's the case, libMML wouldn't really help him until he started working on stuff like FindColor, TakeScreenshot, FindBitmap, CreateBitmap, etc.
