Hey guys, I am posting this because one of my friends is going to college for music and is looking for a great computer to record and play music on. I didn't know if any of you knew of any laptops with great quality built in speakers or if you knew of any good recording software.

All help is appreciated 8)

P.S. sorry if this is the wrong thread, I will gladly move it if so!

If you are an 'audiophile' and want to listen to music 'properly' he would want to buy a good pair of headphones.

So is he studying/majoring in some kind of music?
If so he should ask the school/professors what kind of stuff he should be looking for.

If he just wants good gear to listen to music 1) get a pair of hood headphones and 2) Get a DAC (Digital audio converter I think?) they help your computer drive/amplify/convert the music to digital (?).

Google: 'headfi' and go to those forms and ask there. They REALLY know their shit!

in terms of specs you dont need anything too powerful for music

its the program you need to know about

unfortunately i dont know of any programs apart from audacity

Foobar is commonly used but a lot of music lovers.
And yeah you really don't need any good specs for music just a good sound card or DAC will do it!

No laptops have good speakers built in.

As for a line in… I have no experience.

Not enough information given to suggest what hardware you need for "college for music"

there are many programs for lots of different branches, it really depends what exactly he wants to do.. also as said, there are no laptops with good speakers, they're all pretty bad.. the best you could do is get decent headphones..

depending on the program, you should get a higher specced laptop

When I was in a band, the studios we went to either used:

Windows:
Steinberg Nuendo: http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/nuendo.html

Steinberg Cubase: http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/cubase/cubase6_start.html

Mac:

Pro Tools: http://www.avid.com/US/products/Pro-Tools-Software

As for laptop specs, he will need one with a very good sound card. A daily use PC processor and RAM will suffice, it's the sound card he needs to worry about. The better the sound card, the better he will be able to record.
