Hello!

So, my soon-to-be step Mom has asked me to build her a new computer for work at home and a family computer.

Her specifications:
  • Not to be outdated and slow within three years
  • Dual Monitor support
  • Fast enough for children (They're 17,13, and 4.. and more than capable of using a computer)

Pretty general stuff.. so here is what I have:

Total Current Cost: $656.45 (including shipping, no Mail-in Rebates included)

Budget: 700->900.

Blu-Ray player is missing because I have to ask whether she wants one installed or not.

So I'm not bad, but I can't help but feel like I'm forgetting something.

I suggest getting an at least 7200rpm drive. It would be better getting a 500GB 7200rpm than a 1TB 5900.

The APU is excess if you want to keep that 460. The APU has an amd ……….. ( decided to try irc )
[23:26:23] < noidea> navatwo: im trying to reply to your thread
[23:26:46] < noidea> navatwo: teh apu is exceeisve
[23:27:09] < noidea> because you already have an nvivdia 460
[23:27:23] < noidea> u should get like a 5770 or a 5750.
[23:27:28] < noidea> thatll save bucks
[23:27:50] < noidea> then u could get a cheapy amd quad?
[23:28:11] < noidea> and use money to get a 7200rpm dricve
[23:28:43] < noidea> case is probably excessive
[23:29:15] < noidea> and get an asrock or cheapy mobo
[23:29:32] < noidea> thatll save bucks
[23:29:42] < noidea> its not like theyre tryna oc or anything rite

MOBO & CPU COMBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.660186

This is better than what you have picked, but it is $910

I can knock ALOT off if they are never going to overclock..and are never going to use say the PSU for any upgrades?

Bootleg windows 7 ultimate…do not pay for it…

I don't understand why all of these builds are so expensive… Should be able to do it for around $500 easy. I'll put a build together soon, sorry I can't right now, I'm packing up for college, I leave tomorrow.

charmz is cuz the mobo/cpu. Plus the build that you make for $500 is not going to be upgrade-able.

I'll make you a new build:

Case/PSU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156258
HDD: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533
CPU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103942
GPU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150545
MOBO: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130605
RAM: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
CD/DVD: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204

Side Notes:
This build should need a maximum of 450W, so the one included with the case should be fine if there won't be much upgrades.
The GPU has been designed to work with the APU, so they'll work well together.
Comes with a $25 mail-in-rebate.

With shipping (to Ontario), the cost should be around $700.

agree with everything except mobo/cpu could be amd and get more bang for the buck, easily.. also power supply is way over priced

something like that for PSU would save a lot.. but he definitely doesn't need 750w

There's no point in buying a APU if you are buying a dedicated GPU.(and the APU's need to come down in price by $10-20 to be worth it)

You can buy a Phenom II x4 955 for $100 when it goes on sale (it's usually $110 or so)

You could probably drop the GPU down to a [5670 or 6670, both same card]/6770. 6770 will have a little more oomph but both should play all games, just not maxed. I don't know though you know your siblings? better than I do :P. I would drop the GPU and try and squeeze for a SSD though. That's just opinion though.

So some responses:

noidea, that's a good idea, I had not thought about that. Thanks! I will look into getting a faster HD.

TRiLeZ, there is almost no difference between the builds. The case is a good addition under the consideration of the built in PSU. But for a family which is always fretting about saving money (seriously, its irritating.. they miss the big picture) I feel like its a better idea to get a Bronze 80+ and pay a bit more.

Capricorn, I will definitely do that actually.. I was unaware really what APU stood for. I did some research and realized my mistake. I will probably get a Phenom x4 and then drop down to an ATI 6670. My siblings BARELY game at this point so its more for the dual monitor support without it taking all of the graphic back-up. Thus I will be looking for a card with either dual dvi or dual vga outs. SSD is excessive for this ;).

E: Updated first post, much better from what I'm gathering. This is only my second build. :P

To each their own I guess, a SSD boot drive/programs can really make a computer feel snappier and if you are still going with the 5900rpm drive it might be a good choice. Don't quote me on this but I don't think you'll get a card with dual VGA, and for dual DVI I think you'll have to go up to a 6770 as I'm not sure there's enough room on the 6670's for OEMs to put that many ports on.

I did have to move up to the 6770, but the price point is hardly a big deal in comparison. Its all relative.

Believe me, if this was mine, I would agree on an SSD, but they would not do the maintenance to keep the SSD running properly. AKA storing the wrong things on it.. blah blah.

Alright I get ya

Hopefully MS brings in some stuff to help people take care of their SSD's and hopefully they fix their DPI scaling issues so we can move onto higher resolution screens :)
