Hey everybody, I could use a bit of help right now.
I'm trying to embed a video using the new html 5 <video> tag, this works and the pages are rendering the player fine.
BUT.
I want the video to appear as a thumbnail that people click on and then have a lightbox with the video appear in the page, similar to the first install Firefox page (I can't find a link right now.)
So far the only solutions that I have found are other 3rd party players and javascript, does anyone on here know if it is possible to do this with just raw html 5? Or is javascript required?

JavaScript (read: jQuery) will be necessary for this. HTML (even 5, at least not at this point) isn't a graphics-heavy markup-language. jQuery has good methods for stuff like what I think you're talking about.
If you need more help, I'll try to check back. You may wanna PM me for faster results.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I'm using
this right now, seems to be working OK.

I don't like that site, but whatever. (Well, the idea/product/whatever.. I'd say you'd be better off just using jQuery.)

It uses jQuery? Plus a little bit more javascript.

I know it uses jQuery, but from what it looks like it's a plugin or another library or something, which I don't like. But you're probably not doing this for the enterprise, so it's fine however way you do it, really. :p
(Sorry, this is my job and I'm currently doing it and having to deal with stuff like this all the time.. Sometimes forget that my circumstances are different from most.)
However you get functionality is good. :) But being aware of latency issues, third party pros and cons, etc. will be good to keep thinking about if you want to work with the web as a job.

Ah ok, well thanks for all of your help with this anyway! :D From what I've seen latency hasn't been a big issue… Any suggestions on how to do this with pure jQuery? Would be nice to clean up the mess of code I have right now…

Well I don't have the code you're using. And I don't know how much your page has, but if you test your page on mobile (not sure if you care to - I have to for work), it's a much better judging tool because phones are slower with much worse latency, but whatever. :p
And look at api.jquery.com or something. Or docs.jquery.com or whatever you like.
I could maybe help a little if you sent me some of the code, but I'm at work right now and am only on villavu because we got new machines and updates take ages.
If you PM me the site/source (if it's minified, don't care to deal with that), I could probably give you some tips.

I tried it on the phone. loads pretty quickly IMHO. Then again I'm using an Atrix so most stuff does :p. Anyway, I'll see if I can send you some of the code later, but it's really quiet simple right now. It's just an <href> element with a "rel" attribute set. Javascript is all loaded in the header.
P.S. Waiting for updates to finish sucks.

And they're all either service packs or beta Microsoft stuff, so you can probably imagine how slow that goes.. :p
And that looks like a nice phone (I have a Samsung :) (smiley), so I'm not big on the whole smart phone thing ;p). :o Impressed by Motorola, actually. They talked about working with Microsoft to have Windows Phones manufactured by them, which would be great for MS, since Nokia is already working with them.
And of course with very minimal trips the phone needs to make it won't be noticeable, but if you add a bunch of images and files and what not, you'd notice a difference. Our stuff is much heavier than what you seem to be doing, so it's more important for us, and we were also testing it on either a WP7 phone or an iPhone 2g, so neither of those are a big market.. :p
But anyway, shouldn't say much more about that.. I have an nda.
