Poll added July 31st, 2011, and will end August 14th, 2011.

Hey graphics gurus!

A lot of people have requested that SRL have a sort of "introduction page" that is short and sweet. One that get's to the point and quickly explains what we are, like RSBuddy's. There are no guarantees that this it will be used, but I will be pushing it as much as I can. What we need right now are ideas/mockups of what it should look like. Once we know what we want it to look like, we can find someone to write the code for it. Keep in mind that it shouldn't be too crowded/bloated. It has to be easy and simple for the user.

Page can include (so far):

• SRL's new favicon (banner possibly) when it's decided upon here. Maybe a cool graphic specifically for this page.
• Links to download/setup, scripts, and forums.
• A watermark perhaps? I think this is pretty cool. :)
• Quickly explain our best features - open-source, community, free, reflection, color, etc.

Feel free to post what you think should be included, a layout/mockup, anything, really. :)

That's the point. It's just a mess of words that describes SRL. Probably forgot some, but another one can always be made.

Perhaps a scaled version of the SRL favicon as a watermark would be better?

Here is my concept page. I used Frement's design, because I actually like his better than mine. It's scaled down to not be a pain on the forums.

Here is a link to the [URL="http://oi54.tinypic.com/e04q5z.jpg"]full size[/URL]. Colors and everything are of course changeable. Sorry the logo came out a little rough, I got it from the thread and photoshoped the white out the best I could.

I also thought the top orange bar could be for our current menu links. I just didn't feel like adding all of it.

Everything is done with gradients and patterns, so creating an html version shouldn't be too hard. You could even just export the html and images from photoshop, but that's kind of messy.

Well, it really isn't that glossy IMHO, gradient yes, but the only major one is the header and bg. What else would you like to see there?

Yes I like the blue more…

The blue seems like a "chill" less energetic page
The orange seems like a bright, yet vintage page for some reason…

I guess the blue would do better for like professionalism and it gives the page a better sense of order imo.
But I could see how the orange could also work cause it stands out and people would probably remember the community better for those colors…

Still though I would prefer the blue… (I really gotta work on the adjectives)

I personally like the blue one, it could be better, just a little pimp up here and there… but i don't know how to design or anything, its just fantasy on ma head.

My idea was to pick the best ideas from these, so, the placement of elements, colors, and content. The final layout might include something from everyone.

EDIT: the logo also blends in with the background far too much. its hard to distinguish it at first glance

EDIT2: too many buttons. make them: Forums, Getting Started, Download (merge wiki,register,and rules into getting started - like link this to a tut that will explain all those things)

How about something Minimilastic? Something Linish and clean?

I really like the mission statement. I think it gives off a good first impression of a strong, stable community.

@Geo: I feel like that's too much like the RSBuddy one. When I linked to RSBuddy, I was talking more about concept then the actual design. Sorry if there was confusion.

Yes, I really like that homepage. SRL probably wouldn't need that much information, but it's definitely clean and professional looking.

If you're talking about the logo in the header I know. It wasn't a very good blend. Otherwise I don't know what title you are referring to? :confused:

I thought so. I didn't spend that much time on it because I figured if this was actually getting published whoever was coding it would have access to the actual psd, so eliminating the white wasn't a big priority for me. Here is the mock up I touched up a bit using Dervish's logo.

I also did a basic export to html from photoshop, I don't have time to code a proper page right now, other projects have me tied down. Anyway, here is what it could look like live. Didn't take the time to do things like center, etc. only linked the three big buttons.

It's beautiful. :)

E: The stuff at the top (User CP, Calendar, etc.) won't be possible unless we created our own forum theme I don't think. This is just mean to be a home page, not a part of the forums.

Well alright. I just had them in there for the sake of being complete. They aren't even linked lol. I believe we are the only legal bot because we don't modify the client? Or at least that's my guess, or does SMART do this?

SMART doesn't, and I don't know about other bots, I was just curious.

Simple and to the point…

LOVE yours, Frement. I think the undetectability description should say that we can use either color or reflection or both. From the current one, it sounds like we rely on both, when scripts can be 100% reflection or 100% color.

We'll probably have to go to a vote again. :rolleyes:

I think the mission is fine, but undetectability could be changed a bit. And no point in having links to Simba docs on this page in my opinion. The point of this is to be leecher-friendly. A Simba docs link should be elsewhere, we don't want to crowed this page.

I really like Frement's buttons, but the background is too busy for me.

SPY, too much gradient, and only 2 almost solid colors.

I cut a lot of gradient out already, but I guess I could do a bit more. What do you mean with the colors though? White and blue are definitely the two colors, but I don't see why I need more?

It looks plain.. Imo we need something representing technological advances but in a simple way… not like all high tech and random graphics and colors, but professional and innovative.

What exactly does that look like? Any pages in mind when you say that?

Honestly I love rsbuddy's …. It stunned me when I first saw it. I was like what the heck? I forgot how to use a computer for a second…

Yeah I like it. Some suggestions, though if you don't mind. Make the "Mission Statement" text the same size as the "Features" text. Also add some more space between the banner and "Mission Statement". The part above the buttons look crammed together compared to below the buttons.

Actually, maybe remove the "Mission Statement" and "Features" titles altogether? That would also leave some extra room, and I think a gallery would be cool, scrolling would be even better (but that's more of the programming side than photoshop).

Features maybe, but the mission statement kind of starts out weird if you don't have a title IMHO. Yeah gallery would be cool, except I don't know where we would put it, or what we would put in it?

If you keep "Mission Statement" then I think the text needs to be smaller, but remove Features, or make it smaller as well. Gallery could just go at the bottom or in between the buttons and features and would include screenshots of Simba, SMART, maybe some scripts that use paint, etc.

Ok. My vision of what you said. I also have the gallery in this where the shadowed circles are. I don't have any demo images to throw in there, I'm going to try to find some more later, but it's late here atm… Last post of the night. Look forward to everyone's comments in the morning.

Also, i dont think it looks anything like rsbuddys… Just a bit but not much. Maybe with frements bg itll look remarkably different…

agree with that layout, I was going to suggest something similar to what rsbuddy has.. really simple, big, forums link.. download link (for simba itself).. and different scripts link
and of course a register / login at the top somewhere (smaller)

Well this thread has been open for 10 days already, so July 30th will be longer than 2 weeks, and it seems that Frement and Silent SPY are the only ones creating a layout (unless I missed one?) The deadline is just for the design, the actual HTML/PHP/whatever code doesn't have to be done by then. Frement has already volunteered to write the code (I think?), he just needs to final design to work from.

July 30th is fine IMO. I also like the latest SilentSpy one. We might Be able to work in the Video on the Frontpage :)

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. With the video and some cool screenshots I think we'll be good to go! You guys also may like to know that Wizzup has agreed (well, more considered) to remove the portal page and replace it with whatever is decided in this thread. :)

All 3 are pretty good! :) Frement´s buttons could use some work. The gradient makes the letters looks a bit weird. And Silent SPY´s could use a better font and perhaps some less eye-catching bevels.

It was really hard to decide, but I voted for frement1. It's simple enough and not at the same time. It's really just a tiny bit better then the other 2 because those are really good too. The colors that made me not vote them I think.

I had to go for frement2

Reason for frement over spy was that spys looked to basic and i thnk frement bg overall defeats silent spy

Reason for frement 2 over frement1 was that having the buttons be the same color sort of looks boring…. Like really really boring

Frement{2} > Frement{1}

2 is more colourful and eye appealing, overall more aesthetically pleasing than 1.

As for the video file type, I don't think that's really being discussed here, but I would think you would want MP4 with a OGG Theora, or maybe even flash backup?

Plus, with flash we can have our own player. Could make one as example. We got a much bigger audience with more options than if we would used html 5.

I'm a flash developer for the living. I believe I was the only that was yelling 'FLASH! FLASH! FLASH!'. I honestly don't know any reason not to use it. It's fast and since as3.0 the code is cleaner, better and more programming like than pascal script will ever be.

Yes. Yes, it would, but I don't know if they were planning on moving the forums soon to a different theme and or new system too? If that was the case it would make sense to do it like it is now, but otherwise what you have posted would look the best… Or so I think.

Speaking as a aspiring web dev, please don't flash at all. Use more open standards like h.264 or similar.

Almost any new mobile phone will at least somewhat support HTML5 standards. Apple and Android phones are the best, actually, as everything since v1 (of either) at least support some HTML5 (and it's actually a good amount for any practical use).

Don't go with flash.. HTML5 + jQuery will suffice for whatever.

And Wizzup?, Mango supports HTML5 standards, so that's not a real issue, not that mobile support matters that much, really.. just have a m.villavu.com.

^ This, also, the jQuery can detect if they don't have html 5 capable browser ( IE <= 8.0) and load flash instead, easy.

IE8 doesn't have support for HTML5 btw. And there's not even any reason to detect if they have html5 in jQuery.. no need for those added trips. Just if lt ie9 or whatever it is, or just have m.villavu.com be "dumb" and assume there's no html5 support (which would be a bit silly, as most phones that will be connecting to the mobile site will have html5 support.

I'm assuming you're talking about the watermark, like he said. The background that has a bunch of words describing SRL in which case it's only noticeable if you look for it. The only way I can see it being annoying is if you put your monitor at an extremely awkward angle, otherwise I completely disagree and can't see how it can possibly be distracting.

Won't matter much, but my girlfriend agrees and says Frement (2) is most aesthetically pleasing. That's coming from an outside source, obviously.

No worries :p. 15 hour day? Ouch…. I feel your pain though (sort of) I've been doing some coding projects for friends of mine to get experience… Seems to eat the entire day and your head feels like an over inflated balloon afterwards.

@ the watermark, I too find it kind of distracting, and too busy for my taste. That's why I left it out of my design.

This is what I don't understand. How can it be distracting and too busy when it can barely be seen? I've looked at it on 3 different computers just to see if I could see what you see, and it appeared the same on all machines.

im not saying its too bold, im saying that you can just see it, and as the saying goes, "what has been seen cannot be unseen"

so it sort of draws your attention because your constantly un-purposely focusing on it slightly, enough to make it a distraction

Crowded is the word I would use. It seems noticeable enough for me.. It just doesn't float my boat when it has text behind text :( that's the main killer for me. Sometimes being not being obvious is a bad thing, because people notice it, but don't really notice what it is saying. It just sort of becomes a blur and makes the rest of the page hard to read. I wouldn't have a problem with it if it didn't go under everything Kind of like the background on these forums is left to the side to make it easier to read the posts, which are displayed on a very light blue/grey. Easier on the eyes IMHO.

I think that was kind of the point of the gallery, to embed whatever media we wanted to show, such as screen shots, or video. How that would be done though, is still a little above me, though I know there are Javascript programs that will do it.
