Let's Bring SRL Back To Alive!

How we can bring SRL back to alive.

YouTube

How often RS players will look in YouTube.
Often!

We must create videos how our scripts work compared to Java Bots.

SRL Promotional Video Competition!

SEO
Google.. It's always about google (and other Search Engines of course)
When people will search "Rs Bot", "Runescape bot", "Rs Cheat" it will most of the time result Pow-Bot or RsBuddy.

Why?
Because they have put effort in advertising, and when people will flow in their rankings will raise!

So what can we do?

Answer is extremely simple. Advertise advertise and once again advertise.

Tools that can be used to blow Google rankings away:

ScrapeBox.
SEnuke X

Buying Traffic (Not the best option)

Other Communities

Let's face it? They have users we have brains?

So what can we do?
Make connections to those nasty neighbours.
Show to those communitys about other, different kind of community / bot.
So why they would choose us. Well we are totally OpenSource, good documenting. And biggest thing we are SAFE!

Others

Once again in here I wan't to say few words about Advertising.

Bring up the question what kind of site we are? Ok you got it great.
Then think what we do and for what (Little tip called RS) Great you got that one too.

Answer is:
In-Game-Advertising.
Simple but yet effective.
People will think that what is that, because I swear it's not Pow-Bot. It's something different and people will check it out.
Some people will just think "Screw this" and mabey some people think that this is interesting. "So there is somekind of other bot than Pow-Bot?"

Forums
First of all. We MUST Update IT!
End.
An SRL "Introduction Page" - Improvement

SRL Banner/Favicon [NEW]

Forum Updates [NEW]

Now after people gets here.
Let's make a guess what they will start looking for?
Rules?
Hell no..
Users?
Yeah mabey.

But for most of all they will look for Scripts And The Bot Client (Simba)
Well where is it?
It's even hard for me to find it.

So what CAN we do about it?
Mabey create a download button on main page?

Forum Accessibility

Simplify forums.
They are not in good shape at the moment. Hard to find pretty much anything.

And we must keep focus that Scripts and how to run it must be in first priority when modding forums. That is what people searches for.

Bad Searching.
Advanced Google search instead of old Forum search.

[PHP]program new;
begin
While Not UserCount > P-BotUsers+RsBuddyusers Do This Thread.
end[/PHP]

All this doesn't need to happen instantly, we all have own lifes and not so much time. But this is a community project.

I Created this thread so people would discuss and hopefully take action.
Update: And community have taken an action!

I don't really have time atm, sixthform and stuff.
I should might be able to get some free money on Adsense though if required.

I completely agree with you. :) Villavu isn't as noob friendly when it comes to getting the botting client
 than other communities. With more advertising we make this community flourish..with leechers :p. But at least we will increase the user base, making this forum more popular [b]and[/b] Simba widely used. <33 inc(rep);

Also, making scripts was a lot more enjoyable back when there were lots of people to use/post prog's/etc. Somebody should write a script that spams villavu link on runescape, who knows maybe that might help :)

Edit: can't rep you lol, done it too many times.

Thanks but it's not needed.

What I mean by that is. Adsense would not help us at this point.
You can buy 10k Unique Views (Pm Me the link if needed) For 7 USD.

It's mainly for increasing traffic.

Umm but when we advertise the users will come n just go away… We don't have anywhere near the scripts they have.. No model clicking, interface clicking, custom GUI's.. :S We need a script Database.. u know.. a place where all scripts are categorized and u can just click one and download..

Ref 2 is coming soon.
Our must show them that there is other options than Java bot.
And forums can be re modded that they are easy to access.
Script manager is coming too.

Interface clicking should already be available in reflection 2.
Model clicking, depending on Iamadam's status on his plugin, should become available as well.

We need to get the script manager working too.

MSI is kind of like that. I wonder, if we could make MSI a easy to download .exe it would be amazing.

since we have srl stats, you get feedback no matter what.

leechers > script doesnt get used

One caveat to all this - it seems that SRL has mostly managed to stay under Jagex's radar. Perhaps that's why it has outlasted other botting communities? Posting spambot in the major worlds would end that streak pretty quick. Something to think about.

I'm also heavily against leechers, which is the crowd you would be attracting. IMO you shouldn't be allowed to script/bot unless you can read and describe what the script is doing, or are in the process of learning how to understand it. You don't need to be a master script writer (I'm very far from), but a decent understanding or a willingness to learn should be expected.

We all started off as leachers. I sure did. The only reason I joined SRL was because I wanted 1337 h4x, but I ended up staying, and I'm sure some future leachers will stay as well.

I assume that if we were to do that on a [mass] scale then, a possbiility would be that Jagex may retaliate. However, I don't see the real harm to the community with in-game adverts as so many powerleveling/gold sale sites use the same, and I don't think Jagex takes [legal] action against them.

Many leechers, like myself(once upon a time) transform into scripters/contributors to the community. Leechers are like children, they're a pain in the beginning and usually abuse things, but gradually the grow up (:p) and become better people. So..

More leechers –> More scripts being used –> greater motivation for scripters to write scripts –> more activity :D
More leechers –> More possible contributors –> Larger active user base etc.

Any ways, you get the idea that leechers can possibly be a good thing too :)

Please no. Do we need to do this? I oppose. I agree we could be made much more userfriendly, but this requires a lot of work, and it seems that despite all the technical work of everybody behind Simba and SRL, we kinda overlooked this.

So, in answer Home: Youtube? Hmmm. Every minute there is 48 hours of video uploaded to youtube. Seems rather pointless to me, but it is for sure nice to see your scripts at work, so go for it!

Google? Well, cross referencing works, thats for sure. nough said.

Friendly Neighbours? Well, turn the situation around. How would you like it if someone came here and started advertising ad praising some bot? Dont think the community will like this. I say: keep it low profile. If you really need to do this, then be creative. Give away your script and tell them how to run it. Just to name an idea.

Adversite ingame? No please. I dont want to get in trouble. Beside, I find these spambots the most annoying bots of whole runescape. We dont want to be associated with them.

Forum accessibility? Cool. Love to. But who has the vision to do this? The forums are something we manage together…..and so we do. And that explains why progress is so slow. If you'd ask me, the answer is to a makeover is simple: it requires the effort of one man, maybe two. And the trust and respect of the highest admins. That leaves out many people.

Maybe, maybe if we get crazy, we might have some tricks. Thinking indeed about upgrading. This would instantly mean a new structure.

To cut short. I love your ideas, but reverse engineer first! Now give me proper ideas!

i think theres some confusion if not on your behalf then on mine. I think we all have different ideas on what this thread is trying to address.

"lest bring srl back to alive" suggests that srl is dead? well i would hardly say so.
apart from that by srl what exactly do you mean? the community as a whole? the website? srl the actual library? or did you want more traffic so we get recognized and not submerged by java bots?

as far as i was concerned this community was not entirely based for the sole purpose of botting on rs. besides the obvious aspect of the botting, it was formed of a group of hardworking programmers and engineers dare i say to expand their knowledge. most of the people who write the script we use today claim they dont even play rs anymore…

so are we here for others or are we here for ourselves? do we really need the extra attention? or to be seen as a threat by jagex? im not entirely sure what the end goal is of srl because like i said: as far as i assumed it was to better ourselves.

perhaps this post is a bit confusing or maybe im just not entirely sure what im trying to say, but if anyone can decipher this and or concur my thoughts here let me know..

edit:so i read homes thread on are we dead which kinda adresses the community and all i gota say is it sounds like you miss the people that come and go. but theres nothing we can do about that. people will always come and go… thats just life. as far as that goes, look at all the people that are still here! its been years and were standing strong

The thing is, to better yourself/ learn programming, you make a script. then people use your script, and that makes you want to make more scripts, so more people use them. At the end of the day, because there are people using your scripts, you learn how to script better, improving yourself.

Now a days, there is almost noone making scripts, because there's noone using them.

Back in the day(not even, lol) in about 2007-8, every day there where about 100 new posts, and so many different scripts in every catagory. now theres like 10-20 posts a day, and only a few working scripts in each catagory, if that

well there are a few reasons for that …im thinking its probably because as time passess people get older and have more responsibilities. they may aquire different interests, and theres also members section for scripts. not to mention people are working together for things like rf2 and msi. although im more than 100% sure this will change DRASTICALLY before 2012. why? well ill actually go make a thread about it right now…in the general section of the forum…

Leechers want something piss easy to run. Something they can click download, and run. Simba is almost this but not yet.

If we had another program that could download simba, smart, srl, all the plugins, and have access to a repository of scripts - it would be the perfect client for leechers. Leechers also dont want to be looking at a debug box for information. They want paint, they want tabbed clients so they can bot with multiple characters at the same time without having multiple windows open at the same time.

Another thing they want is to be able to run many bots at the same time. I see many people over at rsbuddy building machines so they can run 20 at the same time. Even if there is such a program as described above (like Cazax's smart grabber) that would run the interpreter in the back round and have smart visible, it would still use a lot of cpu.

Is it possible to refine things so that it is less of a strain on the system?

We know SRL isn't dead. However it is heading in that direction, and that is not the direction this community should be heading into, imo. Basically, there are still a good number of people who enjoy scripting and will likely continue. However, the problem is that the scripts we[people writing these scripts] are not getting used enough :(.

I.E. My barbarian fisher is the only fisher of its kind on the forum, and I have gotten ONE progress report from a user. I may not be a great scripter like others, however a couple year(s) back I would still get more usage. Yet that's not the worst part, the worst part is the fact the script's been downloaded only like 3 times. I rather have leechers just abuse my script like crazy and not post progress reports rather than a few number of users using the script whilst posting progress report(s).

When very few people use a script, it is extremely disappointing. ='(

i make scripts for self use yes, but i still would rather have other people use it, just for the feeling of accomplishment that other people enjoy my work.

I'm in the same boat as Smarter Child. My miner is one of the only working mining(even then, one of the most versatile) scripts atm, yes i got some good proggies(it's even on the second page for srl stats), but it's still not being used as much as it would be years ago. I agree with Smarter Child, making the script is fun no doubt, but what keeps you going throughout the creation process is the hope that it'll be used and people really will prefer using it. So what kind of an impact do you think it makes on the scripter when they spend so long on the script doing everything they can to insure it's fast, efficient, and stable, and after days even months of release the usage is absolutely minimal. It's discouraging to say the least.

I dont have a problem with using youtube(such as posting showcases of scripts in action) or other websites, such as sythe or some other general runescape cheating website.

Sythe still has a SCAR section on the forums, so maybe we can get their admins to rename it SCAR/Simba? then we just have to get people to start posting scripts over there, :)

Maybe, maybe if we get crazy, we might have some tricks. Thinking indeed about upgrading. This would instantly mean a new structure.
I would absolutely LOVE to do this. I think I could do a really, really good job at organizing/structuring a new forum that keeps the atmosphere we have now, but adds the user-friendly aspect to it. I know some people (Wizzup? especially) may hate me for saying this, but I think we should buy this domain, use one of the new forum structures we've been talking about, and honestly, I'd love to take on the task of structuring it and making it look pretty (with help from other people of course, since I obviously don't know everything). Just wanted to say that. :p

Leechers want something piss easy to run. Something they can click download, and run. Simba is almost this but not yet.
We've put A LOT of effort in to making MSI exactly like this. Right now, you have to install Simba, enable MSI extension and you're done. Script manager will help with this though.

From: noidea

If we had another program that could download simba, smart, srl, all the plugins, and have access to a repository of scripts - it would be the perfect client for leechers. Leechers also dont want to be looking at a debug box for information. They want paint, they want tabbed clients so they can bot with multiple characters at the same time without having multiple windows open at the same time.
We already have paint, but it could be explaned tremendously. Tabbed clients would be awesome.

From: noidea

Another thing they want is to be able to run many bots at the same time. I see many people over at rsbuddy building machines so they can run 20 at the same time. Even if there is such a program as described above (like Cazax's smart grabber) that would run the interpreter in the back round and have smart visible, it would still use a lot of cpu.
Yes, yes, and YES. I don't know how, but lowering CPU usage (IMO is definitely needed).

From: Smarter Child

Not to discourage you or anything, but MSI has had a Barbarian Fisher for months and months.

From: Awkwardsaw
I'm in the same boat as Smarter Child. My miner is one of the only working mining(even then, one of the most versatile) scripts atm, yes i got some good proggies(it's even on the second page for srl stats), but it's still not being used as much as it would be years ago. I know i'm not an excellent scripter(maybe closer to "average"), but yeah :p
Again, MSI's miner can mine basically everywhere in the F2P world, so that may explain lack of activity from your miner (not to say MSI's the greatest, just trying to help).

__________________________________________

I took the time to read this entire thread, and the one Home made before this, and Home, you're using the word "our" when you should be using "we" in a lot of areas. Just saying, it was bugging me. :p Anyway, I was talking to Wizzup? about Simba documentation yesterday and the user-friendly thing came up. Basically, we (the community developers) have to assume that the end-user (you guys) know absolutely nothing about anything. We have to make sure everything is easily accessible all from one place. Plain and simple.

We have plans (like the Script Manager) to help make the forums more user-friendly, it just takes time to complete since we all have real life things to deal with, not to mention the many projects in the works at SRL itself.

Just my $0.02.

Smarter Child

@Coh3n: I know MSI has had a barbarian fisher for a while, however the usage of scripts created by individual scripters who choose to release their scripts on the forums is extremely low.

MSI isn't the real cause of our scripts not being used, but rather due to the fact we have a lower user base that chooses to bot[aka leechers].

For example, if I were to create a script not available on MSI, it would probably get a little higher if not the same amount of usage as per say, my Barbarian Fisher.

In conclusion, it is nobody's fault that SRL has less users that use scripts than other communities, however we should be taking steps to increase the popularity of SRL.

@Flight + Awkwarsaw = You guys are absolutely right, the satisfaction that you get when others use your script and post back proggies and feedback is just worthwile the countless effort to improve and advance your script. Essentially, it gives the coder a driving/motivational force to improve and explore more/new programming language/techniques/etc.

It's simple. We don't or did not for sure have access to the domain srl-forums.com and Dankness never changed the IP to our server's IP. After having moved to this domain and spending several days updating the entire database I don't see the extreme added value of going back to srl-forums.com.

I'd say the only real value is that the domain matches our name. Villavu (what's it even mean) doesn't have anything to do with SRL-Forums. It seems like a small thing, but it's really not in my opinion. If you're making a website for your company (lets call it Reputable Inc.), you don't make the domain "furtapiod.com", you make it reputableinc (or some variation of). Something that's easily recognizable to the company.

And I can only imagine how much of a pain in the ass it would be to switch domains. :p

Yeah, domain squatters are money-grubbling sickos who make their wealth off of the loss of others. That's how they remain in business, because people pay thousands to get their domains back.

Though one funny way to deal with them is if your domain had a lot of…. "illegit" traffic going to it. One squatter who took my domain (which I actually had no plans to renew) didn't realize I had a few thousand torrents pointing there as the tracker prior to him taking the domain… after a few days of all the torrents attacking the domain trying to find peers, it was removed with "Services for this domain have been discontinued" :p Of course I never tried to renew it back, I just find it funny how they wasted money on it, albeit they would make it all back after reselling another domain.

But, I do think that we will not change the hosting name simply because it is soooo much work for Wizzy to parse the whole DB. For sure a lot of inconsistnecies will stay. I will let Wizzy decide on this.

2011-06-29 13:01:27

I haven't read all of the thread, so i don't know if it has been posted, but…

Some factors why the community is getting smaller.
1. The ease of general installation and use of the bot/scripts/client as a whole (or lack thereof).
2. The reliability of the scripts that are released are much lower than java counterparts.
3. The quality of the scripts compared to counterparts.
4. Lack of leecher interests: Black market, porn, and illegal activities, lol. (Not saying we should have them, just that people flock more to that type of thing.)

The community on average is probably a lot poorer than others so a fraction of the community uses members scripts, and the proggies and accounts are weaker.

I think a solution is to have more stable and 'epic' public scripts out with a script manager.

Too many people who can actually code/program keep their scripts private and then boast about their private scripts all over the forum. It's degrading to everyone else.

Maybe format the top section of subforums to be main things: Scripts, Progress Reports, News, Client Help, etc.

Well, how about we actually start to do do something about this?

I propose starting an "SRL youtube channel", make videos, both showcasing scripts, but also Simba, and our community. There are always people searching youtube for bots in action, just to see if they work how they would hope, just a thought ;)

then we could make some sigs for use on other botting sites, nothing saying "come here we're better than this place", but possibly a pic that gets data off of SRL stats for a random script, for example

I think we should really vote for ideas, discuss them thoroughly before we do something. I can see a lot of people want to do something; but your effort will be in vain if it's not organised correctly. Sure, discussing them may take some time but it will ultimately be a lot more effective. Plus, just advertising alone isn't enough, we'd need to set out some plans on scripts we'd like to make, a script manager (yeah, I know …) and settle some other things before we advertise it. You need to time stuff like that, you don't want to draw people to a as we have decided - not easy to use setup.

Plus, it's not like it comes down to a matter of days. Like I said, we've been somewhat stable, at least in the last two years. Not a huge decline.

No, in the source of SMART is a list of all possible functions. Just feed it the right hook and you got you information. It's not that hard, but the trick is to do it efficient, as calls to SMART are slow. (Simba -> Smart(C++) -> Smart(java) -> Client(java))

While making an updater you would need more knowledge. And when making your own version of SMART you will need a LOT more knowledge about the client.

Lol I had to re-read the original post to get my mind back on topic here. Anyways, I'll keep working on some more scripts and I might try landing a few advertisements on Rune-Server and Dodian. I'll also post my scripts on Mopar's forums (if I can remember my multi year-old password).

Another key note to keep in mind is when you're posting scripts be sure to use the 'Tags' available when starting a new thread. Link as many key words to your script as possible.

Edit: Just a quick question, but what would be the requirements of making dynamic signatures from a Simba script? Maybe you can give some recommendations, Wizzup?

then we could make some sigs for use on other botting sites, nothing saying "come here we're better than this place", but possibly a pic that gets data off of SRL stats for a random script, for example

Not only botting sites, I would suggest private server forums as well since their userbase is also interested in the "dark side" of runescape gameplay.

The Youtube channel is a great idea as well.

Agreed but that also means we need to take action on such plans. I know you and other have been busy with school and R.L. stuff, but just noticing in the last year that I was gone not much had changed. When are you going to have your break time where you are willin to work on this stuff as well? We need to plan according to who will be able to do what-and-when as well. Just my 2-cents on the matter. It's obviously a big task and going to take the efforts of a lot of us. I for one am going to have terrible availability for the next month or so (hence I'm trying to push out ref2 asap, as I leave on the 5th).

You're absolutely right. I'll have some spare time in august and perhaps before that as well. Regardless, if a plan is good, I'm a lot more motivated to carry it out. ;)

Please no queries to the Domain owner of srl-forums. Give me some time to grab the .org/.net. If anyone shows but the slightest of interest in srl-forums.com, sure they will grab the .org/.net/.biz/.info first before even replying.

But, I do think that we will not change the hosting name simply because it is soooo much work for Wizzy to parse the whole DB. For sure a lot of inconsistnecies will stay. I will let Wizzy decide on this.
I suppose there's no way I could help with that? Anything to make a transition like that easier on Wizz. I do like the idea of having srl-forums.net/whatever as a "main page," then keeping the forums at Villavu; although, maintaining two domains is an added expense that's not really necessary.
____________________________

As for a plan, here's kind of what I gathered from the thread (sorry if I'm missing some things, I'm going off memory).
  • Advertising
    • SRL YouTube channel. Someone would need to take control of this, though. I don't know if anyone has the time/knowledge to create videos for what's needed.
    • Stats signatures
  • Domain Change
    • Using and "srl-forums" domain for a "main page" for Some and SRL. Maintaining two URLs is an added expense and moving the entire forum is a huge pain and takes a lot of time. Time that Wizzup probably doesn't have if things like the Script Manager is to be finished (Fakawi is trying to get a hold of .net/.biz/.org domains, srlforums.com is also available).
  • Making Setup Easier
    • Making the forums more leecher-friendly (I've volunteers to do this).
    • Script Manager. Wizzup? last I heard a GUI needed to be made?
    • Adding features to SMART (not sure if it's possible).
Anything missing?

So why do you think there's so many guests visiting and not signing up…rather than actually signing up and making use of the point of this forum. It's not like they're is any advertising for the site to attract so many guests in a 24-hr period..is there?
I just don't understand why so many guests visit versus members. It was a question rather than a statement. I was 95% sure you needed to register to download/view attachments, just checking. So why do you think that is, that so many guests visit and no signups/more activity?

That is strange considering a lot of the unregistered user activity is in the public scripts section, yet you aren't allowed to download scripts from attachments without registering first. Maybe they are getting scripts from threads with the script itself posted in Simba tags?

I think there's only a handful of those even. Maybe they ran across the forums while searching for "Runescape bots/scripts" (ect…) and saw we don't have alot of the more advanced scripts as some java bots would have and just decided to look elsewhere. That's my theory anyways.

You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

You are not logged in. Fill in the form at the bottom of this page and try again.
You may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

In-game Ad'ing is the worst thing we could ever do. No one likes spam bots. No one.

Lets face it though, the botting scene is way outa control… And, Afaik, Jagex gave up on catching bots. (Why do you think all the new updates are about clans and things that require actually playing the game? And when was the last time you actually got banned? 2010? 2009?) What we have on our hands is an all out bot war! Everyone is chasing logs, ores and everything else that only 1 or a few people get every 45 seconds or so… So what do people do? Find a flawless bot that does something else, like fish or smith or cook, something many people can do at the same time… But now all those spots are flooded with bots, so people look for a bot that does something else, like kill npcs or pc/sw or dung… But now all those spots are flooded, so we need to figure out whats left to bot… Figure out the "New" bot and we'll have all the noobs you want.

we need to make all those bots that are either never made before, or are very few, and you need to pay for.

example:
Dunguneering
Farming
Slayer
Barrows
Rune miner
questers
MTA
Waterfiends, and dragon killers
Sorcerers garden

The only problem with this is that they are all high level or p2p scripts, something that almost no one here is :p

if we don't move to higher level scripts, we need to emphasize on our biggest wepons that the java bots don't have:

Color, and Multiplayer.

imo, if we show everyone that multiplayer is the way to gold farm, and color can be just as reliable as reflection(and doesnt break every update), we will be set

No, but there isn't any real disadvantage either. You can make any script just as awesome with color. Sometimes even better. It just comes down to scripter prefrence :p

and tbh, sometimes i find it much easier to make a color script than reflection, I hate getting tiles and id's, when i could just use my object finder and sps for walking

Buy .net (I'll donate it if you want), redirect to villavu for now, then make a dead simple page for noobs. Everything on one page, not links to existing tutorials on the forum (yes I know that means doubling info to be updated). And of course have a link to the forum. Have links to MSI and other up to date public scripts. Look at other programs, not other bots, but say the Firefox homepage etc.

Then make an installer (AutoIt or something) that takes care of everything with a double click. Update the noob page with that.

Once the script manager is done, update the noob page.

Then advertise the hell out of that start page.

Edit: unattractive… People have no idea what msi is …. The download links have to be more available… When i first saw the page i didn't notice and of the links or guides… I clicked a second time and then saw the links and guides… The links and stuff is good just make it more ovbious… IMHO

It sort of looks almost boring

One thing that I personally think would do very well (Which I have noticed lacks in other forums) Would be a simple install thread. Rather than searching for hours on end trying to find out how to install simba, there should be one download button, and a text + video tutorial to go with it. Just an idea :)

Also, I agree that the forums are messy and not so nice. It needs a de-fragment :P

Also also, maybe we could keep simba kind of deep web, rather that open to the public like rsbot or such.

Why … the whole point of this thread it to attract people…

(I had to include norris in the quote…) :)

The entire point of Simba is to be open source, and be open to the public

I have been experimenting with the portal templates: Is this Portal idea any good?

That's a good start I think.

My break will be in a week (for about 4 weeks), but I'll also have to work on a paper then. But I'm sure I'll find plenty of time to work on Simba and SRL-stuff as well. Seeing that yours monthly absence was some time ago (well, not for a month) I'm sure we can all find some time to work together and produce something nice.

This thread needs to be bumped.

As a reminder to scripters, be sure to post/release your scripts on other Rs cheating communities, such as Mopar's forums. (http://www.moparisthebest.com/smf/index.php/board,167.0.html)

Don't just go around spam posting advertising for SRL, just post you work with a link back to the original post here at Villavu. It will help spread the name. ;)

Home, you should add links in the first post to things that have been started (i.e. the favicon, introduction page, and promotional video).
