Interesting article on how to make successful software

It's actually nothing new, but I feel the first part touches the issues that we all run into eventually. I'd say that Simba is at about 42% of the second 90%, although it's already ``shipped'', I feel there's a lot left to be done it make a better product, although it's obviously usable.

Hopefully we'll all find some extra motivation and get back to work when we have time ( yes you Raymond ;) ), as well as trying to get some new developers, although those should probably work on new features rather than fixing bugs. :p

I didn't read into the Quake specific details, but the first part was interesting, and very very true. :p

Same here, and I couldn't agree more :p

It's a common problem, I guess :p

When will Simba be "finished", though? Simba is an ongoing project without a real plan.

I kind of want the shirt…

I don't think Simba will ever be 100% finished. There will always be suggestions and features that can be added. There may be a time when Wizzup? is finished with it, but that doesn't mean the program itself is finished. It's like MSI, MSI won't be finished until it does everything in RS, and RS is continuously updated.

Yeah, it's also said in (one of) those articles. One thing that just crossed my mind: developers of Java bots with paying users have an extra motivation. If you make a statement like "if the bot doesn't work again 24 hours after an update, you'll get your money back", you'll make sure you update ;) Of course, this doesn't have to result in a good product.

Very true. However, I wrote this ``plan'' a few months ago, http://wizzup.org/simba_plan.html … although I'm not so sure if that would make Simba finished, as some of it looks more like a rewrite than touching the last parts, something we'd want to avoid. It does however introduce some aspects that would make Simba less prone to crash…

Regardless, the code could use some refactoring, a script manager, (hopefully) different interpreter + linux support, UAC on Windows, documentation and tests, all sound like valid targets before we can call it anywhere near finished. Perhaps stuff like tabbed debugging and of course the usual bug fixes.

I've never thought of programs or anything relating to software ever "finishing," to be honest. Just seems to me like you push a big update and then you start working on another, which is fine with me.

If you make a game and release it, then it should better be finished. ;)

But it's still not really "done." Bungie, Rockstar, Activision, etc. don't finish a game and then just stop working. ;) There's still bugs, DLC, etc. to deal with.

I'm pretty sure they have deadlines that they must meet, therefore I think they rush the project near release and so there will always be bugs to deal with.
