Should we upgrade to VB 4.0?

I know it is easy for me to say, since I do not do the actual implementation, but is it worth to upgrade to VB 4.0? Atm I really dislike the %%40%% around simba tags, though I understand the neccesity (sp).

Money is not a problem, harhar…so?

It looks better in my opinion, but upgrading to 4 doesn't mean that you'll get rid of the bugs (as I believe a big part was rewritten for 4). Also, I think you and Wizzup are the only ones who can upgrade so it will probably be up to Wizzup ;)

The character stuff is a one time issue. The problem is that I don't have any newer versions. I was waiting for Markus to send me his pirated vBulletin so we can take bits of code and fix out current one without becoming ``illegal''. Unfortunately (fortunately for him I suppose) Markus is currently partying. ;)

I COULD temporarily fix the character issue by closing registration, as it is only a problem with new names. Or perhaps niels' suggestion works, but I'd want to test that first.

Really, I'd *much* prefer to use phpBB 3.0 to vBulletin 4.0. vB is really more of the same crap. The only problem would probably be links that no longer work, etc. And it's likely we'd have the same problem with vBulletin 4.0.
phpBB is free and afaik most of the components are free too. It's a very popular project and security has AFAIK much improved since version 2.0.

I'll be away for the weekend, but I can announce a temporary forum close for either maintenance or upgrades.

What exactly is causing the ***40; problem?

Wizzup had to patch some Words / Letter combinations. Because there was Exploit that could really harm these forums.

So Wizzup "Banned" These words.

Upgrading to vB 4.0 is relatively painless (those links, I doubt they'll break), though early versions were REALLY buggy (not sure how they are now, but I assume less buggy).
Also we could just update to a nulled 3.8.7, how can Jelsoft check it? This domain has paid, and if we just patch the version so it shows up as 3.8.4 no way they ever find out :')
Jelsoft used to offer a cheap license to update to latest 3.x version, but that was discontinued around two months ago :(

Anyways, sources: 3.8.7: http://www.vbteam.info/attachments/vb-3-8-x-releases/31670d1300234035-vbulletin-v3-8-7-vbulletin.v3.8.7.php.null-dgt.zip
3.8.4: http://www.vbteam.info/attachments/vb-3-8-x-releases/16888d1250628689-vbulletin-v3-8-4-vbulletin.v3.8.4.php.null-dgt.zip

It wasn't a very big issue, but it allowed you to register as a user+somechar and then all the pm's sent to the user would be send to you instead. (sent/send, I'm too tired atm :) )

Oh wow. Not *too* bad but could cause harm indeed.
