ok so i have made a bet with my friend that my laptop would last 18 months without getting a hardware failure
i bought the laptop on 23rd december
about 4 months after the foot fell off which i stuck back on
we both agreed it wouldnt effect the bet
he is now saying it does effect the bet and i have "lost" because the foot falling off is a hardware failure. i however class it as wear and tear
what would you call it?

"the foot"?
Also, if he agreed that it wouldn't effect the bet, then he agreed on it.

Does the laptop still work? If so, wear and tear. Hardware failures are crashed hard drives etc and will cause the laptop to malfunction.

EDIT: @Zyt3x - the rubber feet on the bottom of most laptops

That's pretty typical. The heat just causes the glue on the feet to melt a bit and fall off. Not a hardware failure.

Definitely no hardware failure.
The foot isn't even hardware. Hardware is the electronical stuff inside. If I scratch the case, that's not a hardware failure. You slap that friend of yours and tell him it's wear and tear 100%.
Not hardware failure…how are the "feet" hardware? It doesn't make the computer work…so yes; wear & tear :).

I think you can see it as hardware failure, but not enough to lose the bet for. You won't even notice it while working on it.

masterBB,
You thought wrong. Rubber feet are on the bottom to perch the laptop to sit a certain space above the sitting surface for cooling, and they are used to keep the laptop from sliding.

It's not, it's the rubber things on the bottom of the laptop. Hardware failure would be something like the hard drive failing to spin

Hardware is anything physically…

As long as your screen, keyboard, speakers, touchpad, cd/dvd drive, hard drive, memory, fans, cpu, HDD, & all other ports like usb are still working. Not a hardware failure.

hard·ware /'härd,we(|e|)r/
Noun1. Tools, machinery, and other durable equipment: "tanks and other military hardware".
2. The machines, wiring, and other physical components of a computer or other electronic system.
The last time I checked, I don't believe that rubber feet do anything mechanical.

even if he classifies the foot as laptop hardware, you fixed it for free, and it is non-critical.

I'm 100% sure that's not hardware failure. If your computer is still running and doesn't act stupid, then it's not hardware failure. It's wear and tear and being a person who had dozens of laptops in his family, this is normal, each one of the laptops we have/had has gone through wear and tear. Tell your friend to get his facts straight.
