WinMerge is awesome for comparing the changes made in files. For example, if you have functionality that broke with an update for a script, WinMerge is your man. It makes seeing the changes extremely easy with color-coding (!!) and other goodies. + It's open-source and good for everything ranging from web development to scripting to writing essays to etc.

You are really recommending Nano?

nano is decent for editing files. Wouldn't use it for larger programing, but it works fine.

Sex

2011-06-04 19:48:27

I used it when I started using Linux. But there is more control with vi(m)..

Edit: For programming I mean. I can use nano for like text, but not really programming.

Frement

2011-06-04 19:54:27

Yes I recommend nano, I usually have a connection open to my server. When I need to code something and test it, I just open a file with nano, write the code, save it and test it. Easy and fast.

Same thing with mostly any other editor ;P.

I suppose it is not directly, but on their front page :

"Built around a plugin framework, Code::Blocks can be extended with plugins. Any kind of functionality can be added by installing/coding a plugin. For instance, compiling and debugging functionality is already provided by plugins!"

Which I can add the Compiler Info list.

Thanks!! Good catch!

Komodo Edit is Multiplatform I use it on my Mac's and Linux boxes for a IDE.
jCodeCollector is Multiplatform I use it to store my snippets and sync them via dropbox.

Just 2 I didn't see on the list.

O and check out Oh-My-Zsh for your SSH needs, it has some also features for GIT and HG repos plus it looks cool ( and with the right .bashrc it fixes your typos like forgetting to type cd into a dir or LS instead of ls )

I perfer ConText over notepad++; ConText has code highlighters for lots of different languages and allows you to create keyboard macros for specific file types. So I'm working on some assembly code and bam! I push F9 and the file is saved, compiled, linked, and the code starts running.

I've been using "Espresso" for Mac for quite some time now. Its a HTML/CSS/Java editor with a preview option, and also acts as a FTP uploader. It also has a Dev tool, much like Google Chrome, where you can select elements in your preview to see what exactly they're doing to help figure out what is going wrong. Absolutely love the program. Its very easy to use. You can get a free trial version of it off of their website MacRabbit. The paid version is $79, but the free version is identical. The only difference is that once your free trial runs out you have to wait about 20 seconds every time you save. It does get quite annoying but I enjoy the product so much I deal with the wait time.
