I know that the black market is a privilege for all users and we currently have a 0%/very low scam rate, but knowledge is the best protection.

I would just like to inform all users to just be careful and take caution when selling accounts, gold, or services though PayPal [PP].

Common Misconceptions
1) If payment is sent as a gift, it can't be taken back.
FALSE! A buyer can file a 'Unauthorized Transaction' claim any time withing 45 days after the transaction and get their money back. PayPal is pretty much 99% on the side of the buyer in this case and there is nothing much you can do to get your money back!

2) If a payment comes with the note of something like 'I am paying for virtual goods I have already received and am completely satisfied' then it can't be charged back.
FALSE!
This can still be charged back with the same method as above. OR, the buyer can file a 'Never Received Goods' claim. Since you are selling virtual it is hard to provide any proof/evidence like faxes or invoices that the buyer actually got what they wanted.

Another thing that sucks is that charge-backs can happen up to 45 days after you receiving your money, meaning potentially any other activity you have done or your current paypal balance may go into the NEGATIVE, in which case you must get more money onto your paypal account before being able to use it again!

I personally limit myself to accepting very small transaction in PayPal from usually $5 - $10 so in case I am to get charged back, my losses will be very minimal (when selling at shady forums/to shady people). Only if I fully trust the buyer do I allow myself to accept larger amounts. I've done about 15+ small transactions with Sythe.org users and luckily only one was charged back, which happened to be under $5 anyways, so I'm glad I only deal with low amounts!

By no means and I trying to deter anyone from using PP, infect I prefer PP the most (given the person I'm dealing with is someone I can trust completely) because it is very quick , easy, and they charge VERY LITTLE or no fees at all compared to Western Union or Player Auctions.

I hope NONE of you ever charge back falsely, and that this information just serves as good things to know to keep you safe.

Post any questions/discussion about PP and their services here!
Happy Trading!

Yea very true Home, people often believe that special 'notes' left or getting money as a gift protects them, but it does NOTHING at all! I have once been charged back with a GIFTED and NOTED payment before and it sucked, it was under $5 but it hurts to loose any money to a scammer.

This happened to my brother he sold a crap load of stuff for an online game, about a month later, the guy reclaimed the money, so my brother spoke to him again, refused to give the things back and blocked him.

He went -200 or -300, and had to pay it all back with his own money. So beware of scammers!

I suppose if you filmed the transaction with camtasia or something, the proof would be sufficient that the buyer did receive his or her goods?

Sounds like a lot of trouble in case of a scam. The best solution is to just use Western Union. Perhaps a small guide on common payment methods and their advantages/disadvantages/maybe a little about how they work.

@Cyc thanks for the story! I'll add how charge-backs can be a real pain in the future sometimes by giving you a lower/negative balance! Also, I really doubt PP knows how online games/runescape works a video of a game trade would pretty much mean nothing to them and could be fake for all they know :/. There's just too many different things to prove that they won't even understand like how the guy you are talking to in MSN is indeed the guy you are trading in RS etc etc.. It's just too hairy for sellers to prove!

@Cohen, thanks, and I just did make a very basic WU guide before I even read that hah!

Great advice! I didn't know about this because extremely rarely do I use Paypal… for anything.

How exactly would you go about, let's say, ordering RS GP from someone? I've only ever sent money through an automated money request, never done it manually. :/

Cant you have them do the claim and cancel method?

Flight: you just talk out a deal on forum, IM each other about it, meet ingame, seller gives GP and buyer sends money ( go to paypal, click send money, enter email address of seller and send) (this can be done other way around too, depends on who decides to 'go first')

King: I believe that actually doesn't work anymore for some reason maybe, good idea though I'll look into it some and even try doing it myself as a test, I'll send someone like 10 cents and try it out.
