Release date is 8th November 2011.
Instead of one developer, there are three; Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software
Of course, the publisher is Activision.

Campaign
Modern Warfare 3 opens as Modern Warfare 2 closed: The United States under siege by Russian forces, ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov on the loose, Captain John "Soap" MacTavish and Captain John Price wounded and on the run with the Russian informant known as Nikolai.

Fleeing to a safehouse in Dharmasala, India, the three are attacked by Makarov's men. In this firefight players take on the role of Yuri, a loyalist who works for Nikolai. Their safehouse compromised, the group flee the area in a helicopter.

The game then cuts to Manhattan where Russia is launching an attack on the city from a fleet of ships parked in the Hudson River. (It appears the famous U.S.S. Intrepid may be destroyed.) The U.S. calls in Delta Force to repel the attack. You take on the role of Frost, a Delta Force operative under the command of Sandman. Your goal is to take out a jamming tower on top of the New York Stock Exchange to open the area for a U.S. counterattack.

Following the mission, Delta flies out of the city on a Blackhawk, gunning down enemy choppers as they make their way to the harbor where they have to infiltrate and take down a Russian sub which is coordinating the attack.

As the New York missions wrap up the game jumps forward in time half a year, thrusting players into the role of a Russian agent tasked with protecting the president of Russia as he flies to sign a peace treaty with the U.S. The plane is attacked by hijackers mid-air who attempt to kidnap the president and his daughter. The daughter manages to escape. The president of Russia in hand, Makarov vows to prevent a peace treaty by getting the launch codes out of the president and launching an attack against the U.S.

The game then returns us to Price, Soap and Yuri, now in Africa in a search for Makarov. They meet with a local South African arms dealer who tells them about a shipment of chemical weapons that Makarov is trying to buy. The group make their way to Sierra Leone to secure the weapons from African militia.

Next, players take on the role of an SAS operative who is tasked with stopping a delivery of weapons of mass destruction at a London dockyard. A gun battle ensues, and the agents are chased through the London subway. The mission culminates with a series of unmarked trucks exploding in front of the house of Parliament, releasing a deadly chemical agent.

Several other European cities and military bases are hit by similar terrorist attacks backed by Russia, and the death toll rises to the tens of thousands. The series of chemical attacks opens the door for a Russian military blitz strikes across the continent.

Price discovers that the South African arms dealer who tipped them off about the chemical weapons deceived them and travels to Somalia to find the man and interrogate him. Through the arms dealer, Price discovers that Makarov's right hand man, Volk, is hiding out in Paris.

The game's attention next shifts to Hamburg, Germany where players take on the role of a U.S. tank gunner fighting to push back a Russian advance backed by armored divisions.

As Hamburg falls, the game shifts us back to the story of Price and his crew. Now in Paris, players control Delta Force operative Frost who, with the help of the French special forces, leads an assault on Volk's location in the underground catacombs of the city. Next, players take to the sky supporting Frost's ground movements as a gunner in an AC-130.

After capturing and interrogating Volk, Frost learns that Makarov has a meeting in a Prague hotel. Players control Yuri as he and Soap slip into the Russian-controlled city and set-up an ambush for Makarov in a church bell tower. Makarov somehow catches wind of the trap and escapes. Soap, Yuri and Price then have to fight their way out of the city.

Yuri leads the team to one of Makarov's headquarters in the Czech mountains and the group infiltrates the location, looking for clues. They discover that the ultranationlist has the president and is trying to get the codes out of him. Makarov has also discovered the location of the Russian president's daughter. The group move out to Berlin to try and prevent her kidnapping. Playing as Frost, gamers must find the daughter and protect her, while making their way through war-torn Berlin. The daughter, however, is captured and flown away.

Frost next makes his way to the Kremlin where a task force of operatives attack and free the hostages, but Makarov manages to escape again.

The game's final mission occurs in Dubai, where Yuri, Price and Sandman launch an assault on a heavily guarded hotel, eventually finding Makarov and, yes, finally killing him.

It also appears that the game may also include a post-credits level that features the burning of Washington, D. C.

The stage seems set for a passing of the torch: from player-controlled members of Task Force 141 to the new characters from Delta Force.

Multiplayer
Sources say that MW3 will have as many as 20 multiplayer maps, though it's unclear if some will be cut before release or perhaps sold later as expansion packs. The game will also include a powerful mix of mission-based and survival Special Ops modes. While the mission-based levels will be designed like the ones made popular in Modern Warfare 2, we're told, the survival maps will have players fighting until they're overcome by increasingly difficult waves of enemies.

The premise of this new mode is the idea that rather than taking on campaign missions, as you would in traditional Spec Ops mode, you and a friend join forces to combat waves of enemy bots. This feature takes advantage of all the multiplayer maps in the game, allowing you to play survival mode on maps you already know. While Survival Mode is intended to be a co-operative effort, it can be played solo as well as split-screen and of course over Xbox LIVE. We played over Xbox LIVE on a map called Dome, set at a radar station in the middle of the desert. I believe this is the level TheLegendOfKarl can be seen spawning in at the end of the Call of Duty Elite trailer.

Starting with only a pistol, players can pick up a shotgun from their kills, during the first wave of enemies. From that point on, new weapons can be purchased from the Armory, which is another new addition to the game. A laptop is placed in a semi-safe location around the map, indicated with a large green gun icon. Players interact with the laptop, bringing up the Armory menu. Here guns, ammo and upgrades (such as red dot sights) can be purchased with in-game money.
Resized to 98% (was 613 x 344) - Click image to enlarge

As well as the Weapon Armory, there’s also a Support Armory, indicated by a plane icon, where players can buy Air Support and AI backup. The backup can be extremely handy during the trickier boss stages. Players can call in friendly AI with the D-Pad, just as you could with Perks in the regular multiplayer modes in Call of Duty. The friendly AI is available in two distinguishable squads: Delta Squad are there for extra fire power to distract the enemy, and Riot Shield Squad are more of a defensive team, with riot shields at the ready to absorbs the enemy’s shrapnel. You can only buy one support feature at a time, but once you’ve used the support action, you’re free to buy another.

The bright green grenade icon highlights the third and final armory, the Equipment Armory. This is the place where you’ll go to stock up on frags, flashbangs, rpgs, and what are known as Auto Sentrys, which are the turrets from regular multiplayer mode. The Auto Sentry is a very welcome addition and enhances the tactical gameplay by providing additional cover for the player characters.

In-game money is earned from kills, in a Counter-Strike fashion. Bonus money is also a reward for completing challenges. For example, the Kill Streak bonus earns a player $500 for killing 4 enemies in a row without taking damage. Each time you earn the Kill Streak, the bonus money goes up by an additional $500. An interesting aspect is that you can share money with your co-op partner. So if player one is short of a few bob, player 2 can dip their hands in their pocket and help them out. There’s a nice performance ticker at the end of each round, detailing kills/deaths and money earned.

Players are given 30 seconds at the end of each round to pick up weapons and prepare themselves for the incoming onslaught. Of course if you’re ready earlier you can both press A to start the round immediately, but after playing a bunch of horde and zombie modes in previous games, this feels like a nice little touch.

Enemies get tougher with each round, gaining better armor and weapons, and acquiring sub machine guns at wave 4. Each round of enemies features new challenges, such as enemies with gas masks and smoke grenades. You may have heard about the Kamikaze enemies, which run at you with C4 strapped to their chest. Once the timer has been initiated (which happens when you shoot them) it doesn’t matter if they’re dead or not; they’re going to blow! This can be used as a tactical advantage, to take a few of their buddies out with the explosion. Dogs are re-introduced to Modern Warfare in this mode along with enemy bots, and by wave 8 they too have C4 attached to them. Red flashing lights and explosions all around you, the playing field soon becomes quite hectic, making the 30 second breaks all the more necessary.

If you make it as far as wave 9, you reach the second boss round; Juggernauts! This being an Infinity Ward title, they don’t just spawn around the corner, out of sight. In true Modern Warfare style a helecopter flies overhead, drops a smoke grenade down, and out of the cloud of smoke comes the beast that is the Juggernaut. Pure blockbuster awesomeness.

The AI seems to have some nice depth to it. It’s the small things that really count. If you stay in one spot, enemies will pick up on that and try flush you out with grenades or flashbangs, and if you plant Auto Sentries, enemies soon become aware of the tactical advantage and will target the turret in order to take it out of the equation.

By wave 10 the enemies have full armor and AK-47′s, and attack helicopters will be popping in every few rounds. From that point on it’s a pretty damn challenging experience. This is definitely going to be a game mode used to hone those multiplayer skills, online or offline.

Gamers familiar with the Call of Duty franchise will be aware of Last Stand and/or Final Stand. It’s a perk that’s been used in multiplayer so that instead of dying immediately, a player is down but not out on the ground, with nothing but a single pistol clip to avenge your impending death (or not, in Call of Duty Black Ops, where team mates can recover you). In Spec Ops Survival mode that’s the default situation, but in this game mode, when a player is shot to the point of being knocked down, they can recover themselves by killing another enemy with the pistol. This can only happen one time per game though. After that, it’s up to the co-op player to help you up.

Probably one of the most anticipated features of the new Spec Ops mode is the independent ranking system. Ranks and Leaderboards will be completely seperate from those in the regular multiplayer game. This will breed a whole new type of Call of Duty player. Joining the single player campaign fans, the multiplayer aficionados will be the Spec Ops enthusiasts. There will be a whole new elite community and I’m sure we’ll see plenty more entertaining and tactical videos on YouTube.

Misc
Currently, you can still quick scope in Modern Warfare 3. Keep in mind though, multiplayer is always changing at this stage (new perks, new balancing, new everything all the time based on feedback), however our philosophy on that hasn’t changed since MW2

Dive-to-prone is not returning.
Call of Duty Elite Premium members will get DLCs for free
Weapon base damages will be increased to compensate the lack of Stopping Power
Security is a top priority for IW
Soundwhoring will not be overlooked
Theater Mode is returning.
MW3 will focus on gun on gun fights, and less on air support.
Playing the objective in MW3 will be more rewarding, thanks to tweaks done to the XP, Match Bonus, Challenges and more.
There is no Stopping Power, Danger Close, Juggernaut, One Man Army, Commando, Last Stand or Tactical Nuke.
The melee will be nerfed.
The MW3 unlock system will be "unique", and will not use currency.
The killstreak system has been re-vamped.

I will update this thread when more information is released. Post any findings you have here!

Lol, Activision has always published COD games. IW is just the developer, and I am pretty sure IW is co-developing MW3.

The point went right over your head. I was referring more to how rehashed the story is every single time. Not that it's bad they are pro-American and anti-Russian, but that they should change up their story instead of rehashing the same crap they do every single time, while fanboys eat it up every single time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the MW series supposed to be a trilogy? You know, following the same story arc across three different games? How Makarov ultimately leads the US and Russia to start WW3?

Or do people not pay attention to the story lines of shooters anymore?

I think you're right. MW2 has characters from MW1, and MW2 has characters from both, and starts just after the ending Rust scene.

I'm talking more about the COD series in general, not just the MW part of it.

Well then, let's go back to your rehash thing then. If anything you should be complaining about WWII rehashing, not "Russia is the bad guy" rehashing. CoD 1,2,3 and 5 were about the different theaters of WWII. CoDs 4,6, and the coming 8 are following a single story arc involving several terrorist cells (including Zakhaev's and Makarov's) that spark WWIII*. Black Ops involved Russia as an antagonist because it's historically accurate; the Cold War was between the US and Russia, no two ways around that.

*If you paid attention in MW2, Russia isn't even the real bad guy. The entire point of the "No Russian" mission is that Makarov assaults a Russian airport and frames an undercover US agent for the attack, thereby making Russia declare war on the US. They were duped into war by Makarov, same as the US.

WWII - 4
Terrorists - 3
Russia - 1.5

So the only CoD game that features Russia as the 'bad' guy… does so because that's how the Cold War happened. I give Russia an extra 0.5 as the bad guys because they do invade the US in MW2, but that's due to Makarov's "No Russian" plan.

tl;dr - Definitely a rehashing problem here, folks.

Only one of those games are multiplayer afaik, and most of them suck.

Deus Ex is a classic and Half life is pretty good, Bioshock and Halo can kill em selves for all I care.

I'm indifferent about FEAR.

(well maybe some good multiplayer FPS games have storylines but nobody really cared for them)

I don't play for the story mode (didn't do mw2/black ops) don't find them enjoyable as playing online, especially when everyone's low leveled and just getting the hang of the game/maps.

First-Person Shooter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but were not every game I listed a shooter which takes place place from a first-person point of view? A game does not need multiplayer to be a first person shooter; it simply needs to be a shooter in a first-person perspective (it's in the name…). You should choose your statements more carefully, as story is as much a part of FPS as it is of any other genre.

Knifing was consistently one of the most annoying things in the cod series… I can't understand why the developers haven't nerfed it yet. You absolutely should not be able to kill someone with the press of a single button, even at close range. (oh yes, you dont even have to be facing him) unfairness to the extreme
