Developing a Website

Sean[714]

I'd like to start developing a website,

Domain, BetterJokes.com,

I think it's a decent domain,
I will have a lot of content, such as: funny pictures, funny videos, jokes, games etc. I would like it to be all visually attractive and extremely professional looking, no shitty designs.

I think that I could get a decent amount of money from advertisement,

If anyone else has any suggestions, or would like to help me develop,
I have no knowledge of any programming languages, so a little help would be appreciated.
I can't really pay you, cause I have no money, so all the help you'd be giving me would be from the kindness of your heart,
Again, you don't have to help me for hours on end.
Would just appreciate some links to some guides on how to learn HTML/other languages i'd need to develop a professional looking website.

Also, what are your thoughts?
Do you think this could be potentially successful?
I'm not expecting it to be the next 'google', but I would like to try at least :P.

Edit: I was quite impressed with this website,
http://www.zynga.com/
I'd like it to look similar,

Edit: Send me a PM if you'd like to help more than just offer suggestions

W3school.com. Best web-making tutorial website

Suggestion: Don't give away an idea if you think it's good :)
Now anybody that comes here, can buy that domain, make the site and you won't be able to do anything about it, even if they become millionaires from it!

First learn HTML. Either XHTML or HTML5
Next learn CSS.
Then JavaScript.
Then Learn about databases and networking.

I always used w3schools

EDIT: betterjokes.com is already taken<– hopefully you own it? :p
apparently not though based on the current content…

It's owned by my father,

I have just recently thought of developing a website,
I looked through his domain names, i'm choosing this one.

He is giving it to me.

I highly recommend NOT to use this site as a reference for any purposes. They publish frequently inaccurate and / or misleading information. If you want to develop yourself as a programmer, use something else.

For more information regarding the problems of w3schools, visit w3fools.

Interesting read. I have noticed a lot of examples and things they use aren't semantic at all..

Just because Intersuck Exploder can't handle a line of code does not make w3 schools bad. In fact, it just makes Microsuck that much worse.

W3 is a good place to try out some code online and reference questions.

W3Schools has great PHP tutorials, I remember when I first started like 6 years ago, that site was gold. As was IRC, mostly #php.fi @ QuakeNET, but you can find #php channel on Freenode too I think.

As for the basic HTML, W3Schools should provide a good basic training for it, I always code valid XHTML, but thats just how I want my code to be.

http://php.net/manual/en/index.php is also a good source if you need to find out how some functions work, they usually include examples also.

For the graphics, you can pretty much google all sorts of layout tutorials, and challenge your self to make better graphics. When I started I usually got few tutorials which I liked, and combined all of them to make an epic layout.

W3 has a validator which you can use to validate your XHTML/HTML/CSS codes, if you include JavaScript, remember to put them in CDATA comments or the validator will give you errors.

I don't think you read the whole site or at least the section ian linked to.
w3schools states that:
No versions of Internet Explorer (including IE8) support the property values inline-table, run-in, table, table-caption, table-cell, table-column, table-column-group, table-row, or table-row-group.
But all of those properties are supported in IE8.

Microsoft does suck, but that's not part of this argument whatsoever.

This argument is a little out of place, but it's close enough for me to not care to report.

luffs' seal of approval.
