16 next month, looking to buy a car as a project to drive when I'm 17, but…8 grand to insure a 1988 VW Golf?! Are these people mad? That's like 16x what the car is worth, and without extras like a courtesy car…No wonder so many people drive without insurance! It's a f$*king liberty!

He lives in England. So i dont know how thier inssurance policy works.

I know that the younger you are the more it costs. Over here in the United States for males you have to wait till 25 to get a lower inssurance cost, and women at 21.

Why?

Because Men are dangerous drivers.'

How many tickets/accidents have i gotten in? 0

How many tickets/accidents my sister has gotten in? 5

GG insurance company.

Edit: Oh my sister is 18, and I'm 20. and we both drive the same vehicles, Jeep Liberty 2003. Mines green, her's is red and her's has more engine problems Lol. stupid waterpump.

i luffs yeww

Welcome to the joys of being a young male driver ;) Is decreases ridiculously with every year of age though, I'm waiting until I'm 18 to insure myself, it'll save me a fair amount.

Other ways of getting insurance down:
-Get your parents to be the main driver of the car, and have you as a named driver. Even though it covers 2 drivers, it's still cheaper. (Note: this doesn't get you any no claims)
-Get 3rd party only. Getting fully comp at our age is just a waste, just hope you don't drive into anything (even if you do, paying for the repair yourself might still mean you would have saved).
-Take the Pass Plus. It's only an extra £60, just teaches you some things like motorway and nighttime driving. Knocks a nice sum off insurance.
-Lie about how much you'll be driving. Just say you'll only use it on rare occasions.
-Get a car over 25 years old, classics insurance is incredibly cheap compared to anything under 25 years.

EDIT: @Overtime, yeah, statistically, women crash more often. But, as we are testosterone filled, we are more likely to take risks, at high speeds, such as motorways. Because of this, our "rarer" accidents cause a lot more damage, while women just reverse into lampposts etc. (I'm not being sexist, but my sister has put so many dents in our car, all from speeds of less than 10mph)

Yep your right richard, 100% agree with you.

Just saying they shouldn't base insurance off of science though!

The thing which I find amusing is that my brother's first year of insurance cost him £4k, but he was driving a Ford Capri, which is hardly a KA, but I suppose that goes in with your final point.

Yeh, I'm definitely going to do the Pass Plus. Most insurance companies take a fair bit off when you do that. One thing I read that is that sometimes fully comp. is cheaper than than 3rd party (fire and theft), because those who take fully comp. are less likely to be in an accident, but that's what quotes are for.

I paid $60 a month for minimum coverage a Red '89 Pontiac Trans Am, and I am a male. I was still paying more for insurance than my sister. At the time I owned that car:

My wrecks and traffic stops: 0

My sisters wrecks and traffic stops: 6 wrecks (3 totaled) and countless traffic stops. She was forced to take defensive driving.

My sister took Driver's Ed, I didn't.

In America I remember there being something called 'Uninsured Drivers' that acted like minimum coverage but it was something close to under $500 per year.

Since you're not American I don't know what to suggest for you, but if someone else here is looking for some cheaper insurance you might do some looking into that.

AFK Pass Plus in only accepted by about 3 insurance companies so i dont think you will get that much benefit from it.

check on a few insurance site to see if they take pass plus and tell me how many you find that ask for it when you sign up.

as for adding a parent make sure they also use the car otherwise you are breaking the law.

i insure with direct line only me and its was 600-800, if i added my dad it actually got more lol.

How can you afford that car? How much does it cost? Are you even legally able to be employed in the UK? Are your parents buying it for you? I wish my parents loved me. Obivously i can't do anything but ask question after question when im jealous, but instead of buying a classic car you should buy a classic truck with a 4 inch lift and some 36 inch tires. If you're gonna ride in a SRS lacking deathtrap might as well be able to drive over other cars.

Got some money in the bank.

The one I was looking at was about £800.

Splitting the cost between us was the plan.

Awwwwww :(

Definitely.
