If they're down for good, they won't be missed. Sadly, they'll probably be back. They came back after that whole Arbiter thing, and even worse than before.

In your case, it would be no more than 30 seconds.

Jagex needs to make the legal case against the bots already. It would be betrayal to their players if they didn't.

If Jagex can't down powerbot for copyright infringement, maybe google can ;)

Richard

Powerbot is very poorly hosted, I believe this happens on a regular basis. JaGex can genuinely sue Powerbot though, there is a law something along the lines of copyright infringement when distributing edited code of a company (ie, injection that ASM/BCEL, thus PB, uses). Isn't reflection's innocence brilliant?

I agree with this, I don't see how reflection is breaking that rule. Nothing is modified, only… remotely viewed.

2011-05-18 21:01:11

Don't be silly guys. Having a working lawsuit against a Java bot is not what you should want. As terrible as the userbase and admins behave on those sites, a ruling against them can only equal bad for us as well. Do you think a court cares about "reflection vs injection"? They will see the past ruling and will use it against anything they want.

Innocent until proven guilty. Prove us guilty.

Granted, they honestly have the power to do as they want.

RSBot doesn't distribute a modified version of the client. It downloads it at runtime and injects code into it.

Yago

2011-05-18 22:20:34

So they distribute the client, you run/load it and modify it using their injected code so its your fault? … I'm being stupid at this point

Which in essence is distributing a method of editing the game code, which is theory is the same thing.

Yes but powerbot is using bcel and its only modifying the actions of a player so it don't break copyright rules.

RSBot uses ASM now, and it is technically breaking digital copyright laws, as you are using a modified version of the client.

tom99

2011-05-19 09:38:13

Yes but powerbot don't get paid for that you use a modified version so it still don't break copyright, but its illegal to the rs rules indeed.

Redistributing something for free is still copyright infringement.

The RuneScape client isn't distributed through RSBot, either. The user running RSBot downloads the client just like every other RuneScape player.

They've stooped pretty low when it comes to making money, but I don't see them doing something that drastic, much less risk being sued in return.

Jagex ddos someone? Who told you that?

n3ss3s

2011-05-20 15:15:57

This discussion is retarded.

1. RSBot is a very good bot, you can say the community sucks, you can say there's leechers, but nobody's got nothing on the bot itself.

2. Jagex hasn't ddosed anyone, I have no idea where you got that from, TomTuff.

3. As Method said, Powerbot doesn't provide the modified client anymore, it loads the client just like the webpage does, but doing injection at runtime.

4. If someone has trouble comprehending the above, most importantly they're located in CHINA.

Most likely it would be a very tedious task to get Paris or w/e to court.

Paris lives in England and the administrators at RSBuddy have his contact information. There was talk about suing him for the damage caused by his smear campaign after RSBot was infected, but I'm not sure if that ever occurred.

RSBuddy is owned by Automaton Software Ltd., and I sure hope a court would be interested in reprimanding people who lie and abuse their influence to cost someone else thousands of dollars.

Are you seriously suggesting that people shouldn't be held legally responsible for publicly spreading lies in an attempt to damage someone else's reputation and cost them money? I can't imagine why you would think that defamation is a good or acceptable thing.

Companies that do important things to the world/economy/public/etc. are treated differently in court. There's a reason child labor still happens. If we started having well regulated working conditions around the world, as well as appropriate pay, the whole world would be screwed, at least financially.

But still, I don't think a court weigh out a botting community like they would Nike/Microsoft/Google/Apple/R.J.Reynolds/etc.

Call me crazy, but I don't think anything you said before was related to the point tom99 made. What I thought he meant was (although I assume sarcastically, to an extent) that RSBuddy shouldn't be charged because what they do is well done, which is weighed into court decisions in the real world. Don't think it would be in the RS cheating world.

Who was talking about taking Jacmob and Arbiter (the owners of RSBuddy) to court? n3ss3s and I were discussing Paris' actions and the legal ramifications those might have. I don't know when you guys made the jump from RSBot to RSBuddy, but I've been talking about Paris and RSBot the entire time. As far as I can tell, RSBuddy hasn't done anything legally questionable regarding its conduct with RSBot.

You said "RSBuddy is owned by Automaton Software Ltd., and I sure hope a court would be interested in reprimanding people who lie and abuse their influence to cost someone else thousands of dollars."

Then tom99 said "I dont because it got good methods of picking id."

Then I was just saying that it would be weighed differently if it was an important factor to rs in general (which it is, imo), even though it's wrong. Used real life for a comparison.

Did you even read the post I was responding to? For reference, here it is with the key part in bold:

From: n3ss3s
But I really don't know if courts are interested in smear campaigns between two runescape bots that aren't even businesses?

The first part of my response was to clarify that RSBuddy is, in fact, owned by a legitimate business. The rest of my response addressed his suggestion that a court wouldn't be interested in Paris' smear campaign against RSBuddy. Nowhere in there did I mention that RSBuddy should face legal action. I'm sorry if you and tom99 misinterpreted my post to suggest that RSBuddy was the party at fault here, but I wasn't suggesting that.

Furthermore, suggesting that the relative societal "value" or "importance" of a party should have any bearing on its ability to be heard in a court, especially if there is sufficient evidence to show that another party is at fault, seems pretty laughable to me. That's a topic for another discussion, though.
