Graduated today (with honors) from Montana Tech of the University of Montana with a Bachelors of Science in General Engineering with Civil Option. I was also awarded (as a big surprise to me) the "Outstanding Achievement in the Department of General Engineering" award. Which included a special plaque and $100. Only one person per department gets this, and I was really honored to be chosen.

Just wanted to share with you guys, I'm pretty proud of myself. I think I'll be more proud of myself when I actually get a job though…that IS the reason I went to college anyway, haha.

I'm the guy with the white stole (for being in Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honor society). (aka, the guy with the white bib).

Congratz man! Hopefully you succeed in your job hunting in the near future.

Just out of curiosity, why General Engineering and not something specialized more?

It's just how Montana Tech works. The degree is actually really similar to standard specialized engineering degrees. I did really enjoy the electronic classes and mechanical classes I was able to take while mainly focusing on civil. A lot of places that higher like that too, Tech has nearly a 100% placement rate…..which makes me not having a job yet all the more embarrassing….

edit: we also have to take 136 credits minimum to get a degree (which is around 10 more than most schools), and many people don't get one in only 4 years like I did

Lol they misspelled Brain on your plack!

But seriously, congrats!

Brain

That's actually how I got this nickname….middle school spelled my name wrong on the roll the first day of class in 8th grade, every teacher that day called me Brain…..some people never stopped calling me Brain, lol.

Congratulations! Are you planning on going for your masters?

Brain

2011-05-15 02:25:56

No masters for me right now, I would like to pay down my staggering debt first…get some good experience under my belt, and decide if I want to get the masters in Civil, Mechanical, or maybe Environmental. That's quite a few years down the road though.

semester credit hours. So like a typical 3 credit class would meet for 3 hours per week for a semester (usually one hour on mon/wed/fri). Labs are the bitches, they are always 1 credit, but usually take up the most amount of time…
this degree has like the 3rd or 4th highest credit requirements in the country for civil/mechanical engineering if I'm remembering what was told to us in freshman seminar correctly.

Thanks guys, heading to the capital tomorrow to talk to someone about a job with the FAA. Hope this pans out since it'd be in state and decently close to home with great fishing nearby!

I feel honored having you around. Great achievement. You will find yourself a pretty decent job no doubt!

BTW: What is your specialisation? And what did you do to receive the "Outstanding Achievement in the Department of General Engineering" award? (I love the title, just had to type it)

I wish I was as smart and determined as you,
I'm just a failure pot-head :(.

Thanks everyone!

The meeting in the capital went well enough I guess. He says the the funding is screwed up by congress and hiring is dependent on that. It's a 7 person job and they've only had 3 for like 8 months. He can't even get them to approve funding for a new secretary there….but he's hoping at the end of this month or the next month they'll issue funding for a few years (as opposed to the month by month funding they've been screwing him with) and he'll be able to actually make some plans.

Thanks Fawk! I guess I basically stood out as a great student during my time there. They only give out one award per department, and all the faculty in my department (2nd largest) voted to award it to me.
As for a specialization I guess it's Civil Engineering, pretty broad really. I really enjoyed the hydraulic structures class I took (at the graduate level).

Huh.. last semester I had 37.5h of class/labs. I think about ~9-12 was labs.
