I was thinking the biostar one because faster sata ports

they're pretty much the same.. except for the sata ports & the msi has firewire & stuff which I don't really think would be used

this ram:

also processor I should get..? or should I go intel for a server? I didn't think it would matter for not a high end server

Man I would definitely go for that Sata 6.0, even if you don't use it always nice for potential upgrading :).

Yea, that's exactly what I was thinking.. I see a 500GB hd that uses it.. which is $54 so probably get that

this is my server that will be for just fun & messing around with so like you guys could use it, sex (kyle) is helping me set it up probably :P

I've never seen it go lower than 18down 4up during high traffic hours on cable (since cable is split among everyone on the line unlike dsl..) so it's pretty good!

I wasn't sure on the processor honestly, I was looking around.. I know it really depends on what you got going on with the server… like game server hosting would need a lot more processing than a simple website

probably just a decent quad core, maybe a six core? lol idk

cause

2011-05-01 00:29:43

4up? wow nice! I get 2up max with an avg of 18ish down (tonight is slow though, 13 down).

whoops try this lol: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103932
Maybe that for you're processor?

I actually changed it up a LOT

mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131670R

ram
4x2GB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139051

was debating on

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105277

vs

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105276

both are about half price of a six core.. so I'd be getting two quad cores for the same price as a six (which I doubt I'll need more)

so 8cores total
8gb total (easily expandable to 16GB of ram via 4x2GB's more since it has 8 slots)

I'd go for the faster one. $20 total is worth the extra speed.

Yea I'll go for that

I was confused with power supplies.. is the only reason the server ones are so expensive is because of the redundancy in some or..?

vs

I don't really want to spend as much as I already am tbh lol

Depends on your form factor. Rack servers are thin and have to have longer power supplies as you can see in the first picture. Towers and some bigger rack units have normalish power supplies as you most likely have in your own computer. What case have you picked?

idk since we changed everything

but I'd just go with some computer case.. not a server rack or anything, so just get a regular computer PSU?

Though one thing to note is the lower speed proc would generate less heat and use less power, which may be in your interest.

EDIT: You can use a consumer PSU, etc.

Yea I was talking to my friend who works in washington and sits in the basement with servers lol… he save the $20 because the high GHZ isn't what is important at all

Yes, number of cores is what you want :p. I'd say 2.0GHz at least is fine enough though..

grats

2011-05-01 01:29:41

yea

I'll go with some random case that has good airflow & a PSU that will power my stuff (obviously)

this case is kinda funny lol

If you want a server why not buy a VPS?

why would I buy a VPS instead of have my own server O_o

Well you pay for Internet and power and everything for it …

If you have a VPS you pretty much just pay for that.

http://ideastack.com/vps.html

On that website you can get one for 90 dollars for a year, now that's pretty cheap. It depends on what you are going to use it for so yeah your choice

90 bux for 10GB of space & 256 ram lol

at the specs mine will be it would be like $800 per year & I'm getting it at half that price, seems like a great deal to me.. I could even rent out usage

Uptime will usually be better in offline locations. Nobody has redundant battery backup at home. Few have multiple separate internet connections. However, if you're okay with 98% uptime, it makes more sense to run a server in your own home. (Plus you can use a local server to stream AV around your house ;))

:P my router already has 4TB of space in its USB port for videos / music around my house

but yea, 75% + is fine for me lol.. but honestly it will probably only go down 1 or 2 times a year if that

Pff, 4TB is nowhere near enough ;)

TBH I'd be tempted to go intel for its hyperthreading. I'm not sure what the price differences would be. Probably big enough that it wouldn't make sense to go that direction.

I see you're in Denver Colorado :p

A big price difference man. Haha. I would get a Xeon or something but it cost too damn much..and he'd have to change the mobo as well. The mobo he has looks great and he is saving a bit of cash although it is open box but whatever.

Yea the warranty > openbox imo

that's a $300 mobo for 180

they can steal all the sata cables they want out of that box I have 20 laying on the floor\

nvm reading now it says it's non replaceable? -.- that would ruin a lot

Also keep in mind with your current internet connection I seriously doubt you want to be sharing it with anyone :P. If you consider that an average youtube vid (480p) requires about 1.3mbit (correct me if I'm wrong).
