Scar is closed source, and only has one developer so updates take time, and so do minor bugfixes.
Simba is open source, managed by a few people where anybody and contribute :)

None besides one is supposedly more stabled than the other, one will not be compatible with srl 5 and one has different functions :S Other than that, I dont know any other differences

Simba = open sauce.
Scar = closed sauce.

Simba is maintained/developed by a few active members of the SRL community. Anybody is free to contribute to the project and encouraged to do so.

Scar maintained/developed by Freddy1990 solo (2.03+) away from the SRL community(he has his own forums). Bug fixes and maintenance take a lot longer.

That is the basics, others can point out plenty of other differences. (and I'm sure they will)

SCAR is more stable and has a better UI, but Simba is the future.

Simba has a lot more potential than SCAR - it just hasn't lived up to that quite yet.

In what ways? There are no major problems with Simba, and there are a variety of features such as downloading SRL/Reflection/MSI in one click.

Form support etc. is far from complete in Simba compared to SCAR. Also, Simba can't run form a USB stick (portable) whereas SCAR can.

Not quite true. I run Simba on my work computer From Thumb drive.

Simba has a lot more potential than what is being used at the moment (i.e. will still improve a lot more).

Now move the simba folder to another folder and, possibly, another drive letter. Notice how the include paths seem to fail in the settings.xml?

It's not a portable application why would you even try that? Just set your thumb drive to a letter no one uses like Q:\

There's a bug open for this, feel free to implement it.

That's exactly my point. SCAR has a portable version.

@wiz: cool, but I hate coding more than I hate cleaning my room.

I think you can actually use non absolute paths in the settings.xml, by the way.

Simba doesn't randomly crash due to DIB error :D

Smartzkid

2011-04-13 12:11:28

No, it prefers to crash silently :p

Personally I have yet to see Simba ``crash'' by anything other than SMART/Reflection crashes / random script form mockery.

grats

2011-04-13 13:19:12

Well it crashes after it's ran for a long time with smart/reflection I've never seen it crash with just like something that only uses color.. so that's definitely something else

also what's wrong with the portability for it? I think it works fine for portable, just change the drive letter real quick in the settings and it works for me?

Simba killed Scar in dat one movie.

But seriously, SRL5 support is probably the best argument to use Simba instead of SCAR.

Lol, that's hell of an argument;). I believe they've chosen to drop Scar support with SRL 5, cause users wants to use Simba (SRL is made for the users right). Where users wants to use Simba cause of SRL 5 support. That would be an circle.

I believe Simba's potential would be the best argument.

if srl5 is up and running and tuely makes a difference from previous versions than simba is pwnage. but i still want to master scar first before i use simba regularly…

btw watch this movie about a blind samuai master… awesome film (couldent find subtitles but japanes is an understandable language) "zatoichi meets yojimbo"

Simba has a lot of potential yes. Does it currently have all the features SCAR does? No.

Why do the devs get their backs up when someone mentions this? Nothing starts out perfect with every "wish to have" feature implemented, so why so touchy? I've noticed this elsewhere on the forums as well.

Because they have the features they think are necessary (and that's too much, imo). They can't add stuff unless you point it out to them. ;)

(And even then it's not guaranteed it will be added, as not everything is useful (like most of what's in Simba/SRL now).

Just because some of the built in functions are named differently than they were in SCAR doesn't mean that Simba is lacking what SCAR had.

Nava2

As far as I know, the only thing that SCAR has that Simba does not is a form editor..

… and random DIB errors. :)

Simba is a faster, open source, and community built project. That is all you really need to know. It has a lot more potential than SCAR does, unfortunately, and will continue to be worked on (not that SCAR won't, but quicker for sure).

i feel as if this DIB error business is basically like people telling me Firefox has memory leaks/is bad at memory management. Do these DIB errors actually exist on 3.25?

Well, the few people who still use SCAR to macro with SRL surely wouldn't admit it. I think it's safe to assume that they are still there, since I've not seen a message ``Fixed the DIB error'' in any changelog.

FWIW I'm pretty sure Firefox did have some leaks at some point.

I think that's his point. ;) He's saying that SCAR DID have that DIB error, but that it doesn't now (or may not, as we've no proof anyway, afaik, or something).

Too me the errors don't matter. Bugs happen. They exist. But that's one reason why Simba > SCAR, because I can fix them and present the fix for everyone. I don't need to wait for a single person to find the bug and fix it (not that Freddy can't, but we all have lives and other priorities, etc.).

The community can't support two different scripting platforms (IDE's w/e) and attempt to function efficiently.

SCAR has been around for a very long time and seems to me that it's where all runescape botting took off. However everything is moving open-source these days, especially when it comes to community projects such as these. There is no way a closed-source application with 1 developer can compete with something like SIMBA.

To me it's clear that the SRL community should drop support for SCAR and move on to better things. I don't see how it can go any other way.

SRL5 will drop support, and hopefully by SRL6 there will be, along with a complete restructure, more language support than PascalScript (Python is the main one right now).

So true. However, if SCAR went OSS, I'd switch to it without a second thought.

It uses so many closed components that could only happen in your dreams. Or most of the functionality would be dropped, and you'd be left with nothing more than something like libmml. But yeah, if SCAR would go open source you could merge all it's ``good'' parts to Simba. Nice isn't it, Open Source? :D ;)

Collaboration is much easier.

Freddy seems fairly competent at form prettiness. Afaiknew he hadn't used anything special for the new include manager thing. No pretty form editor though D:

Well, I'm sure it's not too hard to make Simba look a lot more pretty, you just have to put some time into it. If you want to give it a try just let us/me know. Personally I'm not much of a designer, so I've tried to stay away from the graphical design… ;)

2011-04-24 06:31:41

It would be awesome to have something like SpTBXlib for FPC. Not likely to happen, though. Simba could use something like VirtualTreeView, but Wizzup doesn't like to use too much external components.

Wizzup?

2011-04-24 07:33:59

I don't think it is a problem to use external components, as long as the license is compatible…? The virtualtreeview may be nice for the script manager?
