Firstly, WAIT for Bulldozer. Just wait and see what comes from it. You have time, so wait it out.

Perhaps you could link us to the components? It would save time searching for stuff.

That also seems high for what you're getting.. o.O

I have the quad core version of this and it runs great!

Buy an un-overclocked GPU to save your money.

Depending on your normal use maybe more RAM. You won't use it running any games but check how much RAM you use now and see if you come close. (Sometimes I will have a -lot- of tabs open and that takes a lot of ram depending on what websites you're on)

Consider an aftermarket heatsink/fan.

Well Bulldozer is coming out in like, July? Pretty long wait if you are ready to buy right now. And besides, the i5-2500k is a good processor.

He does live in Australia.

I don't think AMD bins the Thuban CPU's as quad cores.

Wasn't to sure about the ram, reduced it to 4GB..

I'm going to get the H70

Get 2x4gb RAM instead of 2x2gb (or 1x4gb if you're looking to save)

That's a very solid CPU.

Buy a bigger SSD if you can (90gb is very nice!!). Of course, you can always add more here, so it's not a big deal to skimp a bit.

If you can wait, wait for Bulldozer. Even if you don't get it, your prices will drop.

Don't blame it on the Australian prices, our dollar is higher then Americas.

Actually the Australian dollar is going up, when comparing it to Euro's too, it use to be 1 aud = 0.45 euro now its 1 aud = 0.72 euro

Everywhere but the states pay high prices of technology stuff. You just have to dealwithit.jpg

From: Simtoon
Why not

Because you pay a shit load extra for marginal benefits. And in some cases, none at all.

Spending too much on a case and PSU. As mentioned before, just buy a regular GFX card and over clock it yourself.

Good catch - you don't need a 750w PSU either.

Drop that down to 500w and buy yourself a nice quality one though like seasonic or something.

Also you do not need to spend THAT much on a motherboard. My motherboard costed me 50 bucks and it has USB 3.0, supports nearly every cpu out there (its AMD), able to take in 16gb ram, can go crossfire, 2 pci-e slots, 4x sata, 6x USB and has pretty good cooling.

2011-04-15 20:14:29

Yeah I agree you are spending too much on your mobo, I'm sure a $100-$150 would do the trick nicely. Also, you should definitely not buy the overclocked grafhax card, it's not hard to OC one. That CPU is awesome! I personally wouldn't shell out that much, but still if you can afford that good on ya.

As people were saying don't go all out on video card. More then likely that's the first thing to fry in the system anyways. I'd get a decent video card and if you want to make up for the video card get a i7 2600 or 2600k. Idk the Aus prices on it but for US the 2600 is $300 and is like in the top 10 charts for benchmarks atm.

Don't go over the top for a case, it might have a bunch of fans in it but you'll regret all those fans later. From my experience the fans gradually go out making more noise then stop working all together.

Motherboard - despite what people have said on here, I'd throw more money on this then anything else other then a cpu. I didn't check your link, but read the reviews make sure its a reliable and compatible mobo. By compatible I mean there is always weird things that come up, like some ram it doesn't support or a glitch in the bios etc.

PSU - you probably only need a 600w or so PSU if that. Again reliability over power, I've had bad experiences with PSUs frying computers. Get best reviewed/rated PSU thats 600-650w that would work for your system fine. You would only need 750w if you ran 2-3 graphic cards.

IMHO stock fans are always junk. Buy a few high end (think $20+) fans, and throw out anything that comes with the case. You'll thank yourself a year from now when your computer doesn't sound like a jet airliner taking off.

probably should go amd processor, would save a lot can get more power
also no reason to go h70, h50 does fine for like $40 less? it's like medium power h70 (since h70 can go from 1500rpm to 2000rpm or whatever)

Just buy a $40 heatsink and spend the extra on a SSD

Way better way to spend your money.

I think you're paying roughly $50-70 (100 at most) more than you need to, in regards of the case.

Well you could make a case out of card board, so you could say any money spent on a case is paying more than you need to.

The difference between a $50 case and a $150 case are the details - less weak plastic, better design characteristics, higher quality materials.

It's up to the person purchasing stuff to decide if the trade offs are worth it. (I personally don't care for pros and wouldn't care if my case was cardboard*)

*poster has personally made a case out of cardboard

I have the Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB, I have to say at first I was very impressed, it is a very fast drive. Unfortunately, 6 months later this thing is making a HUGE racket in my machine, I built it to be very quiet and now the drive read head is making all sorts of sounds when doing even the most modest of work. I want to RMA it but noise is not covered under the warranty, I have to wait for it to fail or have a SMART warning…

Also, skip that power supply, its very over priced.

I have this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 and it is a very solid 750w PSU, Corsair makes VERY nice PSU's, also its $70 cheaper.

hello,

his site is dedicated to the many thousands of ordinary people who decide to build their own personal computers each year – very often, on their kitchen tables.

My goal is simple: I want to present an illustrated, step-by-step guide to building a computer from scratch, in simple language, to help make your do-it-yourself computer-building project as enjoyable, educational, and rewarding as it can be.

If you're visiting from an iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, or other mobile device, please check out our Mobile Version. It loads a lot faster and is formatted for easy viewing on handheld screens.

Thanks
