Whats funny is this was caused by a bad driver. LOL and everyone says ATI drivers suck.

At least ATI don't release drivers that make your graphics card catch on fire! ha!

Mhmm I have ATI Radeon HD 4200… I have to say the graphics itself is insanely amazing.. Except the brightness and stuff sucks.. when u edit the default settings to custom ones, it just gets bad.. so default is where ur stuck at.

I wrote a 3D C++ program, and there were small green boxes all over the edges… ETQW had the same problem. And openGL was like 10 times slower than with an nvidea card. Had no problems with directX though. Still pretty sure it was an hard ware issue;).

the 590 doesn't "destroy" anything on the market. Unless by "destroy" you really mean it beats the 6990 in half the battles.

Yes, absolutely annihilated. I won't even comment on the second thing.

Technically it wasnt the driver's fault. If they hadn't even tried to overclock it this wouldnt have happened.

iirc the driver issue was that it didnt limit the overclocking when issues were occurring.

IMPORTANT: The supplied Geforce Drivers 267.52 for Geforce GTX 590 will not stop the card from overheating when overclocking. Please use newer versions from the Nvidia website and stay away from 267.52. Otherwise this may happen …

Benchmark running was 3DMark 11. Settings used during card failure:
GPU Clock @ 772 MHz
GPU VCore @ 1,025 V

Basically the card destroyed it self because it didn't limit itself when it detected its temperatures getting higher. Hence, why the next drivers fixed this problem and help set a "limit" on the card for better detection.

(If you watch the 20 min, Newegg video, he mentions all this.)

The company is called "SweClockers". Its there job to this since they have a youtube channel and get paid to put videos like that up.

Everyone's uncle will always try to Overclock something, why else would Nvidia release a Overclocked edition of the 590?

The Southern Islands might be overprices since they will be released around that time. And buying a 7000 series graphics card may be overkill for everything i might need. Besides a 6990 will last a good 5-8 years. Till ill need a upgrade. We can only wait and see as there is still little information given as the conference is being taken in June, who knows whats going to go down.

Overtime

Hmm makes no sense though. Nvidia releases a overclocked edition, but yet you can't overlock it no more?

I overclocked a 5 year old Graphics card and it didn't "overheat" itself.

If there going to release a $730 card and drivers, they should make sure there tested at the fullest.

Again company is "SweClockers" I guess, they should just sit on there chairs drinking tea. It's not like they were upset about it that much either. Legitmate business like those get free stuff to test to its limits to "help" promote there products.

Obviously Nvidia failed at that. I'm sure they got a replacement.

soldered onto a real slab of a circuit board. Nvidia has tweaked clock speeds to fit: the 772MHz cores have been reined in to 607MHz, the 1,544MHz shader clock to 1,224MHz, and the combined 3GB of GDDR5 memory from 4,008MHz to 3,420MHz.

That edition there using is at 630mhz stock. The gpu can run at 772mhz but have been downed a notch so that it can be "stable" upon release. These guys pushed it to 772, and it was running great im sure, but it just couldn't control its temps upon overclocking.

Besides there new drivers fixed this.

Tests have to be done to fix bugs. These guys had to do it.

wut. Half a 590 is a 580. A 580 certainly doesn't play every game max settings. And neither does a 590.

And that isn't even mentioning multiple monitors where the 590 would take a beating from the 6990 due to lower GDDR.

Yea it runs on my gfx card fine.. not the best(obviously) but on max settings it's perfectly playable…?

This means my graphics card that is half the power or less vs a 580… can run it.. so 580 would run it with ease

and two 580's is overkill by far

All I want to get at is the graphics cards we have out aren't needed for any games.. for a long while

and overclocking them is silly.

Come back when your 460 can run Metro 2033 at 2560 x 1600 max settings with 120 fps (which would max out a 120 hz monitor, which is enough for 3d)

And please, you can't really compare two GPUs and say one is "half the power". It doesn't work that way. (especially when comparing a 460 to a 580!)

You seem to be under the assumption that people buying multiple GPU only have one monitor. But if these people are dropping $1500 on GPUs they certainly have enough money to have 3 monitors running 5760 x 3240. And believe me, no card on the market would be able to run Crysis or Metro at that resolution with max settings. Just look at the 590 - it already loses to the 6990 because the 6990 has more vram at high resolutions.

My 460 can run that.. it would be laggy? yes

It was whether 590 is needed or not.. which it still definitely isn't

No see, you think your opinion is fact. I adamantly believe buying into x-GPU setups is a waste of money, but if you want to take advantage of a 120 hz screen + 3D you don't have any choice unless you drop down the graphics.

And I don't consider that a GPU can play a game max if it doesn't break 60 fps. A 460 does not play Crysis at 60 fps, or Metro or STALKER at 1080p, which is native resolution for almost every LCD over $120.

inb4 there's no difference between 30 fps and 60 fps

If you had said, "my 460 can run everything max that I care for" you would have gotten away by saying that. You are obviously not the people AMD and nvidia are targeting with their dual GPU, so you'd never see the benefit to owning one.

So it's just like a regular quad core chip that you place in an am3+ socket?

Silent

No, unfortunately it runs on a new socket. FM1

Capricorn

2011-08-09 14:03:32

The A8-3850 isn't worth it until it drops in price a little bit.

Otherwise you're better off buying a regular budget build. Where Llano really shines are laptops though. There they have Intel beat on performance/battery life and that's quite amazing. Actually it makes Intel look like a bitch, it was a real shocker when I read the battery life on Llano laptops.

Intel's CPUs are still faster but their integrated GPU sucks dick, so it's still all comes down to what are you willing to trade for what… Battery Life? GPU? CPU?

It should not bottleneck your Phenom. It shouldn't unless there are some software conflicts between drivers lol. In fact getting a good GPU relives stress off your CPU in a lot of cases. Thats from my experience and what I read around.

Well… Where to start…

First off a 430 isn't really fast, at all. And compared to AMD's offerings it's kinda… mediocre. I can't decide for you if you made a mistake buying the card, but AMD's options at that level beat the 430 in the majority of the benchmarks (iirc)

Nvidia's lower tiers just weren't that exciting this time around.

As to bottlenecking a CPU… no, that doesn't really happen. A CPU can bottleneck a GPU but not really the other way around.

Onto unlocking cores, the Phenom II X4's are different dies from the Phenom II X6's, so no, there are no cores for you to unlock.

As to saving up money for a higher tier card - maybe, your choice. AMD is shipping their new series sometime September or October. Or is that sales launch? Honestly I can't remember but they'll be available soon.

Mr. Doctor

2011-08-14 21:58:08

Thanks. I will definitely buy a new card when I order some new parts. The 5770 is twice-thrice as fast as the GT 430.

I should have definitely looked more instead of blatantly buying a card. But buying a quad core seems sufficient enough. Is there a website that shows card releases, new computer stuff and such? Seems I'm pretty late on everything here. Seeing stuttering in my games when playing with my Pentium 4. Right when the action begins, too.
