Never really occurred to be until Timer IM'd me on IRC today.
(8:51:47 PM) Timer^: Hey
(9:52:21 PM) Coh3n: What's up
(9:56:35 PM) Timer^: Are you working on finishing LWS?
(9:57:55 PM) Coh3n: finishing it?
(9:57:58 PM) Coh3n: You mean fixing it?
(9:58:59 PM) Timer^: Yes, have you fixed it? :p
(9:59:14 PM) Coh3n: No
(9:59:22 PM) Coh3n: I haven't really thought about it to be honest
(9:59:40 PM) Coh3n: I went and looked at the mine after the update though and I couldn't even tell when there was coal there :p
(9:59:57 PM) Timer^: Yes.
(10:00:02 PM) Timer^: Haha, it's challenging. :p
(10:01:24 PM) Timer^: amg
(10:01:28 PM) Timer^: I'm ready to shoot myself.
(10:01:35 PM) Timer^: Making MSI SCAR compatible is blehh.
(10:08:07 PM) Timer^: FINALLY got MSI to compile in SCAR.
(10:09:43 PM) Coh3n: Lol :p
(10:10:30 PM) Coh3n: Do you not want to use it with simba or what?
(10:10:51 PM) Timer^: RRL
(10:10:57 PM) Timer^: well err.
(10:11:00 PM) Timer^: I just dislike Simba. :P
(10:11:44 PM) Coh3n: How come?
(10:12:37 PM) Timer^: Code is sloppy.
(10:12:53 PM) Timer^: Lacks a good base, hasen't been developed long enough.
(10:13:00 PM) Timer^: Plus, SCAR is more stable.
(10:14:03 PM) Timer^: Well this sucks, the form crashes SCAR.
(10:14:04 PM) Timer^: : [
(10:14:15 PM) Timer^: "Could not call proc: ..."
(10:14:42 PM) Coh3n: MSI's form isn't written as well as I'd like it.
(10:14:50 PM) Timer^: Works without the form! :D
(10:14:57 PM) Coh3n: Awesome
I feel like he'd be the type of person to convert it to reflection and pass it off as his own. Am I just being paranoid?

A license wouldn't stop him though, but I agree I can see him do that.

I don't really want to read that whole thing, but basically does it mean that he can copy and distribute it, but can't copy, change it, then distribute it?

Because of copyleft, he can do whatever he wants with it, then distribute it. (GPLv3 btw)
I don't see why him doing whatever he wants with it is a bad thing though…

GPL v3 pls. Also I have yet to see Timer make a definitive argument against Simba other than "it sucks".
Wizzup?
2011-03-28 05:08:22
He's just an attention whore. Next time, just ignore him. I'd say make it GPLv3 and be done with it. That way you force the license on to him as well. I doubt he'll ever complete this.
You could obviously make up your own license with very strict terms but I can't really recommend that…

Just go Public Domain or BSD or whatever.

If he doesn't want someone to rip his work and claim it as his own, I would avoid BSD and Public Domain if I were him.
This made me laugh though…

He just can't come up with a proper argument. The core code base is actually pretty well written, IMO.
E: A funny fact is probably that you can't use the GPLv3 code in a non-free program legally, either. We've had discussions about interpreting it being a different case, but I don't think it is.

That's just his opinion. I even agree with him about the sloppy code to a certain degree. The thing is though, he doesn't know what the code of SCAR looks like ;)

GPLv3 it. Its open source, the source is freely available, and people need to ship it with that license.

Thanks guys, I'll look into GPLv3. :)

What would he achieve from 'stealing' MSI?
Might as-well licence SRL then?

If I'm not mistaken, by laws of copyright he's not allowed to distribute the code, but would law stop him? same as license…

If he were to steal it, distribute it and sell it, I think we would have some ground in court even if we don't have a licence.
But adding a licence wouldn't hurt either

He isn't going to/can't steal MSI and it would be pointless and impossible to sell.
SRL and MSI should be under GPL but it really doesn't matter.
All he wanted to do was make a version of MSI he didn't have to run in simba.

Nah I'd say it is a good question to raise, Timer isn't a real threat but if RS cheating gets too big again anything that isn't protected is at risk.

Isn't it possible to make it so that everything released on this forum is GPL if it isn't released in a specific licence?

Possibly, doubt if it will hold in court and I even more doubt we will ever (have to) go to court with this. You could have a disclaimer that you're giving away all your rights to the code unless stated otherwise by you, but that's like taking away freedoms. Not in favour, not really an option.
Making SRL ``properly'' GPL is not easy. You'd need to get all the developers to agree on it. Although ones that have left for years probably don't care; it's still not nice to license their code just like that. Although I suppose we're just blowing this all up. :p

Probably, but its also not hard to append the code at the top of the license:
(* This file is part of the MSI project as hosted at http://villavu.com
*
* This file is protected under the GNU General Public License (v3). For a full copy
* of the license please see the LICENSE.txt kept in the root of this repository.
*
* Copyright (c) Cohen Adair (Coh3n) 2011
*)
Adding this to the top of each file would be suffice. You could also add a LICENSE.txt to the root of the repository containing:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.txt.

You think licenses would stop him? A lot of larger companies don't obey the GPL completely (except for Microsoft, they actually do) and we don't have the funds to prosecute him.

Yeah, thanks I know what's needed to add a licence to the code, but I was thinking we wouldn't have to worry about situations like this in the future if the code was licence'd by default :)
