Why SRL doesn't thrive

I've come to a conclusion about why SRL doesn't thrive like it should. It's got great scripters, a very friendly and helping community, reasonable moderators and administrators, a smooth and flexible platform, a stable include, and a pretty much undetectable method of automating play. So what's missing?
A drive to make scripts for advanced players.
Go take a look at the powerbot forums. They have scripts aimed at higher level accounts (e.g. Soul wars, pest control, auto-fighters, specific purpose fighters, sorceress's garden, runite miners, hunting scripts, construction, prayer altar training, thievers, farmers, variety of Magic scripts). Scripts aimed towards those who are tired of playing runescape.
The community here really doesn't play runescape. And those who do only bot to farm gp, or if they do they don't in fear of a ban (which makes no sense to me because SRL has a proven low ban rate).
Who really expects people to come along looking for a script that will mine all the copper and tin in the world on 15 different level 20 accounts? No one, except the people here who made them to farm gold for themselves. When people come to a community with a free bot, they're not looking for these sorts of things - they're looking for the sort of variety of scripts that is available from bots like iBot, PowerBot, and RSBuddy.
In addition to the benefits of our community listed in paragraph 1, it is incredibly easy to learn to author scripts. In comparison to the popular java bots, someone with 0 programming experience can come alone and learn pascal-script in a matter of days. One of the prime motivators to learn to script here, besides the fact you can make your own bots to do what you want, is the SRL Member subforum, and the scripts within. Upon reaching thise milestone, they see that there are almost no up-to-date and worth while to use scripts.
Why stick around? Discuss.
Note: this is not a rage quit thread.

Now that you can trade normally again, I think that a lot of moderate players will be looking for fast ways to make gp. They too will understand that it is a good idea to not bot on your main account while you're still playing, so I guess we must target those players.
You're right that SRL doesn't have many (member) scripts for high level tasks. This is probably because, as you said, not many scripters here play RS any more and they'd rather create a script that'll get used a lot.
It's hard to get people to stay around, especially with such good alternative bots. But the reason why you should stay around is that you can change things. If you feel that there are not enough scripts for high level tasks, you can create those scripts. Or wont you, because they probably wont get used a lot? If that's the case, then I guess we're in some kind of vicious circle.

I don't use any scripts here except the Rogue's den cooker. The reason I stick around is because this is a great and friendly community. We're like a big happy family, not just another group with thousands of people who don't know eachother. Also it's great to easily be able to help with the ongoing project here such as MSI, reflection and SRL. :)
I don't use any scripts nor do I create any scripts. The only reason I am here is because it is an awesome community, and I've like grown up with it :p. I love it here :).

Most people that bot, simply want to push one button, and of they go.
SRL has a steep learning curve and requires a lot of skills for a beginner, programming knowledge for starters. This excludes the majority of botters. Also, we do not advertise ourselves at all nor do we affiliate with buying/selling, payed scripts, etc.

You're absolutely right. The biggie about this community is pretty focused on 'bot armies', which is why we're very intrested in MSI, which for the majority is centered around the free worlds. There's a huge possibility of scripts in the members worlds, but how many bots can you really make for a members army before it gets expensive?
In my opinion, the majority of member world scripts should focus more around 1: individual accounts, and 2: skill training priority over cash.
Edit, I could agree more with Fawki. Simplicity is what attracts the majorities. This is a learning community, not "Here's our bot, use it with no effort required!" I LOVE that about this place, and if you ask me I say it's a good thing we aren't swarmed with people who don't give a damn about 'how it works', just as long as it does. It makes us more of an exclusive community, kinda like setting up a barrier between scripters and users.

I dont think that the community is influencing "bot army" type scipts…i think its because there are few scripters contributing quality scripts which everyone uses and those scripts are bot army based…..i think we just simply need more people contributing quality scripts. I for one am finishing up a shilo village / edgy fly fisher, and an Any NPC fighter, probably release them by Wednesday.

I disagree, the SRL community knows how their scripts work, unlike the RsBotters. Because of this, we have a fair percentage of the active community has written a script (or several) that works. The main problem is that we are a little bit more intimidating than RsBot and others because we discourage leeching and expect users to want to learn. I really don't think we want to target most of the leeches to enlarge our own community.
I guess the botted army based scripts go back to the fact not many scripters play runescape actively here, so there is no need for high leveled, member scripts.

It is an advantage to us that our community is not as large as Powerbot's, because then Jagex focuses most of their attention to them rather than us. Also, it seems like only the smarter botting population come to this community, and that is an advantage because there aren't as many stupid posts and trolls everywhere. That's why I like it here :)

Actually The OP is right.. I dont stick around because I like the scripts (besides the fisher and the rogue cooker and enoyhs agility) but I stick around cuz its nice here and I learn something about scripting..
I use powerbot(once) and simba both inorder to get what I want done.. Mind u I do play on my main account.. When u play smart, u dont get banned. Thing is most of the scripts are for low levels which is of NO use to me at all.
Yeah I bot members on a high lvl account 115+ but the scripts here are just -__- except for the few mentioned at the beginning of this post. You argue that there isnt much u can bot on a members? Thats not true at all.. I bot herblore, farming, THIEVING, Cooking (99 now), Agility, Fletching and WC..
Every bot I used except for cooking and agility, I had to modify in some way as they were made for noob tasks… like stealing tea from a tea stall or killing rats or cutting willows.. etc.. And from an honest point of view, powerbot and other java bots have way more advanced scripts that appeal to a user like me more.
One script that deserves a good applaud would be the harry's fishing script which I modified to do monks because after all you wont really see a high lvl with 80+ fishing doing lobsters at karamja on a members account.
All the scripts here were made for levels <= 50..
Just my two cents.. dont kill me or flame moi please.

What kind of (more advanced) scripts would you like to run on your high lvl account?

What kind of (more advanced) scripts would you like to run on your high lvl account?
Well Thats about all I need… I already have a modified thieving bot, fishing, fletching, crafting, herblore.. Thing is if I werent running these modified bots and I search these forums for such bots, they dont exist.
Not a single Herb cleaner exists, Not a single Monk fisher, As far as I can see every crafting bot does flax (Not a single one does glass or d'hides or anything).. Actually had to modify a fletching bot to do glass blowing.
As a few people on this forum pointed out to me: "We make bots that makes money in f2p.. As far as I know there is nothing u can craft that makes money in members".. Thats the answer I basically got when asking for a crafting bot. When asking for a runecrafter that does natures via graahk rather than the abbys ones that currently exist, I was told it'll COST the user more so its sorta useless… Well I kinda find the Idea of recharging glories every single time a waste of my time… every 28 glories u go through, u gotta stop the bot and recharge urself.. then thats not really a bot to me.. So I modified that too and added webwalk for graahk..
TBH Most people just make bots on here to either gain wealth or gain wealth in f2p.. other than that, the bots wont exist.
Yeah its not a bad Idea to make bots for wealth gaining but where is the diversity? Bots like the agility on, cooking one, fishing one, shuttle u's ivy cutter : all appealed to me cuz its not just money only.. Lost money cooking, gained it back eventually.. Cut Ivy's to get lvls.. Fished and gained money, Agility gained xp and lvls.. Not just money alone.
Those are just few examples.. Im sure there are more but those examples only apply to myself.
One nice suggestion instead of all the varrock east miners and weird miners would be one that does living cavern… yeah u need a high lvl for it and im gunna get bashed for saying that but so what.. U might need a high lvl and people are gunna say: "Most users wont have the mining lvl to do that so its useless" "There are more lower lvls so Varrock East will have more views" etc..

ggzz, Emherb cleans herbs and makes pots or (unf) pots ;)
I feel the diversity in scripts will also come as the community expands as the demand will become higher (there is no point making a script that only 2-3 people will use tbh).
The main reason people don't mind about the small diversity it script style types is because 1. its all about the community and how everyone works together :) (testing/scripting) and 2. as previously posted the scripts on this website are mostly for either gold farming or army usable scripts :)
This is the only scripting community I have used and will ever use, I have looked on powerbot and I just hate the lack of community there, its practically like sythe. Also, when saying thank you/posting proggies on here you know that the scipter/helper is grateful for every helpful comment you post, and you WILL be remembered for what you do here ;)

Once everyone refocuses their efforts on the include itself and script making we'll see a 2nd glory age.

The only problem with Python right now is it's speed. Some things in pyMML would have to be done in C, or else it would just be too slow. Pascal isn't that slow. It rivals C/C++ in some cases. But one reason I'm slowly moving away from Simba is because it's Pascal. I don't know many companies who use Pascal.

@Thread: I'm willing to bet that the reason we don't have scripts like you mentioned in the first post, Tom, is because most people who actually write scripts don't have member's accounts, and if they do, they're not high enough level to test/develop. Its just giving people options. A lot of new programmers start with Python these days. Some dont have the motivation to learn something else. Some places teach Delphi and Pascal. I remember mixster was in the IRC last year telling us how he was taking Delphi in one of his college cources.
People start with different languages, so why not try to accommodate as well as possible? :)
Python is also a very versatile language that can be used for many different problems. If someone wants to quickly hack up something, Python is usually the language to use.

The only problem I have with saying python will bring more users/scripters is that there is still a learning curve. People want to just run, as has been said. I do think libmml will be a cool tool for this community, but it's still not the final factor to bring more people to SRL or anything.
For the scripters it will be sweet to be able to code in whatever language they please.

The only thing to keep in mind is speed.. (almost?) none of finder.pas can be in python, for example. It would be ridiculously slow. Not only because Python is a slow language in comparison to FPC, but also because of what it takes to do it. Same goes for Java/whatever. Java is faster than Python, though.
Just thought about something.. With Java people will want to use reflection, and libmml doesn't have anything like that (it's Pascal), so there's really not much point in making a "jMML," I don't think. I also need to sleep so don't take this too seriously. :p

But sometimes simple pascal is too simple and problems could be solved with another language more efficiently. For example, I don't think pascal has the
ternary operation.
in c, and example would be 'result = a > b ? x : y;'
If a > b is true, result is set as x, if its not, then its set as y.
In Python its 'x if a > b else y'

Nope. If you think about it, C is pretty much the base of most languages today. And a lot of things factor in to how fast a language is. Obviously there's no set speed that any language will always be, and different machines will run some things faster than others. But besides that, some languages are dynamically typed (Python), some are statically typed (Java), some process information differently, but just about all if them have some start in C. Dynamically typed languages (Python) are much slower, by default really, than statically typed languages, just because of how they work. The internals of languages effect a lot as well. Python's internals are pretty cool. :3
I somewhat agree with Wizzup? though. I don't really see why we need Java support, as we don't need a jMML for any reflection stuff at all, which is what I believe people think. RSBot doesn't run how it does inherently because it's a Java bot. They did the work to make it run how it does. We'd just have to do that work, but nobody really does.
I really don't like how Java runs though so I won't make a jMML, but whoever wants to can when libMML is done.
