nerd rage & tears & custom computer case

My motherboard died so I got a new one and it was DOA (dead on arrival) so now I have to wait a few more days -.-

all I got at home is my old ass macbook so it can't run simba because OS X etc..

I tried wasting time by working on a custom computer & router case, but it's pretty much done and ready for computer parts now

QQ

anyway I still need to put a shelf in for my PSU (power supply)

anyone got ideas where it should be placed? (the power supply)

I was thinking right in the left center corner
looking at this pic:
http://i.imgur.com/kArQx.jpg
right above the blue intake fan (which is for the gpu)

Also got to build the bays for hard drives, which I might make out of metal because of the heat they put off… haven't welded in a while

Please don't be silly, a wooden computer case is not a wise/worthwhile idea. The heat probably won't properly dissipate, the heat and possible moisture can make it flex, etc. Just throw in 20 bucks and get a decent metal case.

How will you do the power/reset buttons and front ports?

Hobbit

2011-03-24 21:32:59

Harry is right, there is a reason saunas are make of wood.

Its really sweet I just don't think its very practical unless you intend to watercool.

I definitely want to see a picture of the finish product.

Remote controlled up on my desk

@ other people, I have metal mounts for motherboard, this won't be the first case I've made & probably won't be the last.. wood is fine for cases

a lot of wooden cases are about, no one directly places motherboards onto wood, pretty much all of them are grounded

My case is waterproofed & glossed it won't have much if any moisture

by the way it is so big because I'll be adding a "burning tower" 6 dvd/cd roms for burning for a few bands etc
it's also part of the legs for a desk I'll be building

It's going to get too hot as well, even if it doesn't flex. You're going to regret it.

My other one is fine with heat O_o

I've been working with woods for years, I'll post my kitchen which I made when I get home :P

I'll definitely post it here ;)

part of what you guys don't see are possibly two 120mm fans on the plexiglass which will be blowing across the motherboard out the back (where the pci slots / usb etc etc)

Hobbit

2011-03-24 22:09:00

The incomplete one and the complete one differ greatly.

The complete one seems thinner wood and has much more plexiglass surface area.

(Just my observations)

Like this one

two 57 CFM fans down there, idk it the case might look smaller than it really is, it's about 20inches tall to give perspective… it's part of a desk leg..

the next thing I want to make is a desk where it has a glass square you can see through down to your computer, so it would be embedded in the desk (just motherboard obviously) haven't really figured a design for that one yet

http://i.imgur.com/qILDC.jpg

only thing I can find that's even close.. but small piece of glass in the middle

I'm heading home, my silicone is dry by now so I can take better pictures of more complete box etc

Well if you don't intend on this being a serious build than it's awesome for nostalgia, but in all serious Metal >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wood

overclocked to 4.0ghz I doubt my processor will have more than 2degrees C difference in my case vs any metal case, I'll test it out once it's completed

of course metal > wood for getting heat out, but with 2 top exhaust fans, 2 fans that blow across the motherboard & out, 2 intake fans (1 for gpu 1 for cpu) & 2 fans for inside uptake of air for airflow this case probably won't have a degree difference

the back of the case is on the floor in these pics, the bottom is on the "bottom" of the pictures

Looks cool man, with the kind of ventilation you have going on, I doubt wood is going to be a problem for you. My next build I'm going to do submerged in mineral oil (obvs not wood lolz). But ya looks good dude keep posting pics :)!

Thanks! I've never seen one of those submerged in real life, do the parts etc just touch the oils physically?

I'd like to see that.. I can see a lot on google but don't know much about it, etc.

idk why so much people think it's going to have heat problems, it'll probably be cooler than a $50 metal one actually

some of my other wood works if anyone wants to see, these were a few years ago my first ones I actually used in my house.. sandblasted some of the glass, was just practicing since I hadn't done any since I was a little kid..

my comp case was the first time I worked with plexiglass, not sure if I can sandblast it

Grats, You Rock, don't listen to the naysayers, keep the creative energy flowing..VERY STEAMPUNK !!!!.I've personally always been intrigued with submerged mineral oil setups….

Yea those look very very cool, I was thinking about different additions to a desk with one of those, possibly like the glass tank in front of where people sit, so it's visible

biggest problem is how high the desk is compared to where legs go etc not sure what to do with that.. I build a lot, pretty much everything in my house

Wood isn't a problem, obviously is not "ideal" but he obviously knows his wood (no pun intended). Depending on the treatment etc. of the wood it CAN handle very high temperatures it just doesn't displace it as well.

Its not like he's going to overclock it or something.

There is evidence that suggests that HDD's fail more often when they run too cool. So your HDD fan seems completely unnecessary(They'll never get too hot unless your overall airflow sucks).

lol what? Show me a confirmed article on this.

Ive been running a 230mm fan in front of my 10 year old HD for 4 months.

EDIT:

10 year HD runs cooler than my 2 month one. LOL

To proove another point.

Looks cool but if i were you i would either make it watercooled or make sure theres a crazy amount of evenly distributed airflow because it is, wood.
Just one question, wheres the power button? :P

EDIT: I just realized this could be a nice mini heater for your feet lmao just jk

yea, still haven't done any of that yet, also have to put in the dvd drives etc.. just wanted to get it up & running tonight

they'll never get too cold either unless I live in Antarctica, believe it or not fans don't cool the air.

It's cold as hell inside the case… even while overclocking.. there's far from any need to watercool. This wood case has better cooling than all the metal ones I have

Irony? You're the one trying to say room temperature is going to kill my drives

Smartzkid

I wouldn't want it (I prefer smaller computers) but it looks like a solid build. I think it would look cooler if it was all wood & watercooled… it could blend as a small table :p

Just read through the whole article and this is what i came up with:

The data used for
this study were collected between December 2005 and
August 2006.

oh okay so these results are 5-6 years old. I'm sure technology has changed this, and the fact that my 10 year old drive is proving this whole article wrong.

next:
For example,
some drives have reported temperatures that were
hotter than the surface of the sun. Others have had negative
power cycles.

LMAO, your disk would have melted if they were hotter than the sun, let alone, your computer would be on fire. (are these guys amateurs?)

The most important quote:
Temperature is often quoted as the most important environmental
factor affecting disk drive reliability. Previous
studies have indicated that temperature deltas as low as
15C can nearly double disk drive failure rates.

WOW 15C geezus thats 59 degree Fahrenheit? What did these guys do, turn on there computer outside when it was40-45 degrees outside? I have no worries i run at 30-36C . So i just lowered my chances of disk failure.

I also took the liberty to share the graphs on here.

As you can see, as the years go by the hotter you run the HDD the more failure it has. SO my 10 year HDD should be doing just fine :D

Then this graph just contradicts that graph as the probabilty of this happening from running from 30-35 only has a 0.01 probability. DAMN im so worried!

Oh and the fact they didnt mention what HDD they were using is fail. They mention 'Seagate' but that was someone else's work not theirs.

So the question is for grats,

How old is your HDD?
How cool/hot are they running?

Then look at the probability that your HDD will fail at. Because damn I'm sooooooo worried with that 0.01 probability lol!

agreed with overtime, that article is pretty bad, I doubt it's very accurate & if it were true case companies wouldn't be putting hard drive fans in

Yea, eventually I'll probably go crazy with a system & watercool it.. etc

I like this case because I'll (hopefully) be able to build any computer I want in it for many years to come with flexibility
