So I used gparted on my laptop to make a small partition for another os. The other OS is fine, but the original I (read: think) is corrupt :(
The screen just goes black.
The win boot comes up with both partitions as options.

Any helpz?

You didn't really give a lot of information. What is the look of your partition table? Are you using LVMs? RAID arrays? etc.

Um, what is the other OS? etc.

Windows doesn't like you changing partitions on it =/

This happened to me once I had to find a way into the os and delete a registry key, google it up!

LOL! *sigh* lemmie explain.. Insert a windows 7 cd, boot up.. open command prompt in the recovery menu choice…

type the following:

Diskpart
ListPartition
Select Partition # <– The partition that isnt booting..
Active <– Will set the bad partition (selected partition) active..

Restart.. put in the winxp or win7 whatever one..

Do the same thing and this time repair.. it will repair the boot.ini file or replace it.
Restart and repair 3 times in a row.. as it WILL NOT work the first time 100% sure.

After the third time, remove all cd's, restart and u will boot onto the bad partition.. now the good partition wont show up right..
well U can either use EasyBCD to add a bootmenu option to the boot.ini so that when it boots u can choose..

OR

whenever u wanna switch, boot into either partition and open cmd from the start menu.. type the diskpart thing above.. and choose whatever one u wanna boot into and restart, u will be in that partition..
This is exactly how I boot my hackintosh(win + mac) + linux

P.S. I had that problem before. The above solution will always work unless your not doing it right or the partition has permanent damage(other than boot.ini being overwritten) and restoring is needed.

Or you can make a very small partition <50MB and install grub to it. Completely customizable, reliable, fixable, supported, open-source (iirc), grub. Gotta love it.

Make sure there are no USB flash drives connected.

This happened to my moms computer. She left here USB stick in the computer and everytiem she turned it on it went to Black Screen. All i had to do was remove the usb stick from her computer and it booted right up.

For some reason when you have a USB Flashdrive connected it will detect that as the first hardrive and try to run off it, resulting in a black screen, unless you had a OS Installer in there like Windows 7, Ubunutu etc.

I know it seems pretty logic, im just trying to see what you have connected to your laptop when you boot it up.

On the command prompt, I have done:
Diskpart
But I tried ListPartition (Read: LIST PARTITION) but it says:
"There is no disk selected to list partitions."

The disk is how many hard drives in the computer.. Type this:

List disk
Select disk #. Usually 0 for hard drive #1

Then do the list partition etc

Right. Thats an old bug. My mum's computer has that issue. Idk if it can be fixed with a bios upgrade or not though.

That only makes sense if it detects it as an hdd, or if you have 'boot from usb' selected in the boot menu.

Umm, XP doesn't have a repair option on disk boot?
Just has partition stuffz xD

EDIT: So I think I F'ed my computer -.-
I thought meh, doing setup on the non-working partition might fix it, thinking it might do the repair.
Well it started isntalling windows, then my laptop overheated, and now I can't boot either windows (read: maybe because I selected active partition?) and it won't let me continue until I finish installing windows xp…
FML.

Damn bro ur in a tough situation.. as always if u think its the partition selected that wont let u boot to either of them, just repeat the steps and select a partition u kno will work.. Lets say I install mac and windows.. and windows only works.. I did the above steps to fix mac, I reboot and mac isnt fixed, now I cant get into windows.. I just repeat the steps using a windows 7 cd and whala Im back on my windows partition and have to use Easy BCD to boot mac instead.. Thats just an example.. The above steps can be repeated to switch partitions at any given time no matter how badly gone one of the partitions are.. A windows 7 cd will help u. Or if ur winxp cd supports this then your fine..

Mine supports it but Im not sure why {I think I customized it, Kinda like the windows 7 cd with removing ei.cfg to get all in one ;)}

Not sure why your windows xp cd doesnt have a repair option but If it has command line options then im pretty sure you can repair it through the command line. Or get easy bcd to rebuild u a boot.ini file, copy it safely somewhere, uninstall it, and copy it back to the partition… Or just leave easy bcd on the computer and let it boot that way I guess..

Im kinda weird when it comes to this stuff.. I dont like having to have programs boot for me.

Just did a search, Seems some windows xp cd's only support recovery through a console mode.. while some have a GUI( mine).. To get to this recovery console U press R for repair, u choose the windows xp installation you wish to repair. http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Honestly… all this partition selecting stuff probably works, but it is much more difficult than setting up grub… I KNOW there are people that will agree with me.

Sounds like a shitty mobo - I leave USB drives in my computer all the time and they are only booted off of if they have a OS on them.

If you move removable devices below hard disks + CD/DVD drives in the boot priority does it still do that? Look around in the BIOS for options that have to do with booting from USB or anything related.

Boot to windows install disk. Hit repair. Open command prompt, type FixMBR and also FixBoot (Just to be safe)

Also guys… it still wants to finish installing xp?
All that I want to acheive now is to get the data off it…

All of which goes to show if you don't know how to fix it if things go wrong, do not attempt this.

Brandon

If u wanna get the data off it and they are both on separate partitions but on the same harddrive, just go to the working partition, boot up.. open my computer and u should see another partition in which u can copy data from via teh drag and drop.. It should be kinda like if u have a USB in, then u see two partitions (removable) and the C drive..

as for it wanting to install… it should ask u to install anything.. that will just overwrite anything already there.. it should just show u stuff like chkdisk fixmbr fixboot diskpart etc..

For Windows 7 I think you need to enter bootrec /FixMBR and bootrec /FixBoot.
