The Claw

2011-03-09 07:24:20

Just installed Ubuntu, and am looking for some tricks/tips/1337 programs to put on it. Such as:

- Music Player
- IRC Client
- Anything else

Any ideas?

Oh yeah, that was it, I had forgotten the name of it. :)

I don't recommend installing Amarok, because it needs a lot of extra libraries…
Banshee or Rythmbox work fine for me.

As to an IRC client, I think you might just want to get XChat: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XChatHowto
Irssi is still the best, though.

IRC: irssi
Video Player: SMPlayer w/ mplayer from source
Music: SMPlayer or JuK (I prefer JuK over AmaroK)
Internet: Firefox 3.6+ (Nightlies are nice!)
EMail: Thunderbird
Dev: Eclipse, and vi[m] (duh?)
Other: Install WINE from source or get the dev branch of binaries, its much better than the current [k|x|]ubuntu repos version.

Dont use IRSSI if you have Ubuntu, use X-Chat, it actually has a GUI. For music player use VLC. And if you have an iPod use gtkpod

Why does the GUI matter? All irc is is text..

This.

Irssi is a BETTER client than xchat, in its own ways. There is no reason to use xchat over irssi unless you prefer a GTK/Qt gui over a text-based gui. I think Irssi actually has more features. Its just much less noob friendly.

I find using any other client to be obnoxious now.

I personally use Rhythbox, I like it because it detects my iPhone and can play music off of it.

Lots, it really depends on what you're looking for. :p

Hmm yeah.
internet - firefox
file browser
notepad there
music, video, IDE for programming(I know it's nooby and pros use editors and compilers separate, but I like for example codeblocks), torrent, things like normal ppl uses

p.s.: I find it very funny that most threads I write in you are the most likely one to respond. It's like I am invisible, but you can see me? :D

File browser? The default file browser? :x Or nautilus if you need it for whatever reason (just open up a terminal and sudo nautilus).

I personally am a fan of gedit. Comes by default with ubu (I assume that's what flavor you're using).

I use rythmbox for music, just because I don't store music on my ubu partition and only use last.fm, and it works just fine for that. When I did have music before, I liked amarok. Plays every format besides .mp3 and .wma I think, as they're proprietary, but there's a plugin for that. VLC is great for video, as it plays just about every format, if not every format.

For and IDE.. uhh.. well it depends on what language you program for. I don't like language-independent IDEs (I don't like IDEs anyway.. I still just use gedit/notepad), but I just checked winehq real quick and codeblocks works fine with wine, so you can just do that. :p

I guess you do C++ if you use codeblocks, and gcc is a great compiler from what I've heard. Not an IDE, but yeah.

"
For your convenience, we provide binaries for all platforms Code::Blocks supports:

  • Windows 2000 / XP / Vista
  • Linux (Ubuntu & Debian, 32 & 64 bits)
  • Mac OS X 10.4+
"

From codeblocks. So if you're using ubu or debian, they have a native IDE I guess. :p

Torrenting, just use the bittorrent client that comes with it (if you're on ubu).

Also, I think pidgin > empathy, so I'd recommend getting pidgin. :3

What flavor are you using?

Sabzi

2011-03-10 14:07:19

Thanks Ian that's pretty much what I was asking for, a good summary.
Kubuntu btw.
I know codeblocks is running on linux, I already installed that, I was interested if there is a best one known wide among linux users.
Also you was right with C/C++.

Well generally in the linux community (at least the legitimate users and not the hipsters who just use it to be "cool," like me), the more non-graphical way to do things the better.

There are valid reasons for that, imo, as you almost 100% of the time have more power with a terminal than the synaptic package manager.

Dunno if there are any big differences between (x/k)ubuntu, so not sure if there's any kubuntu specific stuff I should recommend (obviously I don't :p).

Notes on an IDE:
I'm tired of having to use the mouse all the time for small edits. It's annoying, tiring, and counter productive. I can see why the more experienced developers suggest ides such as vi, vim, emacs, etc. Everything is done via the keyboard. This is much more efficient than having to move your mouse every time you want to run, quit, edit, etc. The only problem with the suggested ides is that they take configuration, more than a lot of people are willing to throw in to their schedules. I'm soon going to attempt to learn vim. There are plenty of sites helping with vim and I'm sure if those that are looking venture onto the irc at the right time, will receive help from those more experienced.

i luffs yeww

2011-03-10 17:13:59

Ay, Lucas. ;3 What sites, other than possibly vim's own site?, do you suggest?

Also @ Wizzup?/anyone else who's good with vim.

vim, by far. Kate is also quite nice for an editor. vim is much faster once you are used to it though.

Thank you :) I'll try to remember that, in case I for some reason get questions about it.

And I do agree that vim is great, but I don't know how to use it, and I don't think a brand new linux user would know, either.

VLC plays music? :o lol. I don't do much media stuff on linux. Just last.fm through rythmbox.

Pidgin is just absolutely terrible when it comes to MSN. File transfers don't work and neither does webcam/voice calls

I can send and receive files, and I don't care if webcam and voice calls don't work. I have skype for that.

Or aMSN works, iirc.

What's the point of installing the Gnome version if you're just going to replace it all with KDE apps? Really. Those suggestions are really bad for a gnome environment.

Its perfect for someone that doesnt have the will or time to learn the ropes of a new semi-complicated editor.
