Public Scripts section is a mess!

It's really a mess. I guess you could say "it will help against leechers, they won't bother to search for the wonderful gems" - not really. It just wastes people's time and might give newcomers the impression that most scripts are broken (which is somewhat true; if you take the entire 5+ years of SRL and throw it into a single subforum, due to the updates that happen in RS, it will be very unstable ;))

I propose making a new subforum "Graveyard" in the public section, and moving all scripts there that are confirmed "broken" (i.e.: won't compile without editing procedures, and scripts whos author hasn't visited in more than a year). A script author can request to be un-graveyarded via the report system or some other method, and it will keep itself clean.

At the time of this posting there are over 82 pages of threads in the public scripts section. Quite a bit is general questions that should not be posted there, and most of the rest are really old scripts that should get archived but not kept in the area where "working" scripts should be kept.

Or there could be an unlocked sticky saying "***Working scripts list***", and people could post what they confirm as working (and if a script that's on the confirmed list doesn't work anymore (it might be derailed into a "help me with this script" thread, but I don't think it will)); but I think it'd be better to have the entire section cleaned and sorted out. The title prefix is fine, but it's really bad when there are 82 pages of stuff that is pretty hard to see what still works.

"Harry can complain, but Harry wouldn't have the effort fix it!". I actually would try my best to clean it up, as it's been bugging me for ages now. I'd just like to note though that this is NOT a thinly-veiled "give me moderator status plz" thread; I am simply offering any assistance I can, to help solve this problem. I understand all of the mods and admins have lives, and that's probably why it hasn't been done yet – and I'd be glad to help cleanup that section if anyone wanted me to. If not, no harm done.

Please consider this suggestion to cleanup that section, I can bet it will help everyone both old and new. :)

We used to have all scripts in sections. Would that be of any help?

Harry

2011-03-03 04:19:48

With the current limited number of scripts, sections would not be wise in my opinion. The little RS icons is a good method that is already implanted, but it's disorganized with all the "spam" (old unworking scripts).

As always we'll need someone to sort everything.

An idea though, I'm not sure about vB's abilities but maybe have the script auto-moved into the Graveyard if the thread is inactive for X amount of days/weeks/months and/or if the thread is closed. If the script is updated, give the OP the freedom to move it back.

"Working scripts" thread never work because they get outdated as soon as the OP or mods forget or go inactive.

Just an idea running through my head to further Zeph's idea to ultimately clean up that section: 5 sections:

- Graveyard(the thread itself has to be at least 3 months inactive and the script not working)

– Popular working(Highly rated working active scripts, the threads in this section should be moved from working after a certain amount of good vouches by a high staff member?)

— Working

—- First script.

—– Requests.

All with Icons to display what skill the script is for. A coin stack for money gathering(like a regular flax picker without a spinner). sword for combat. ying yang symbol for a hybrid script. a sword infront of a ying yang symbol for a combat hybrid.

Just my idea of something that would work.

All we need is an up-to-date list of working scripts, sorted into sections.
Quick and easy. So quick and easy, that if no one else does it, I will in the next 48 hours.

Like RS Pro Said

Breaking it up into a ton of sections is ugly and honestly SRL isn't filled with enough working effective scripts to even make that a worthwhile option. Format:

-Working
-First Script
-Obsolete

Three simple sections. Moderators can easily move the non-working towards obsolete. Simple, clean, effective.

Thanks YoHoJo :D

I think popular working would make people want to get their script in there.

But we want to say that scripts can become un-outdated, it's not a one-way street.

When and why was the icon legend/sub categories removed (I believe it was Sex ? that updated the legend) ?….I admit my frustration as of lately, having to search through all scripts to find the relevant skill I'm training….even if the scripts aren't current, it's nice to have an archive in case someone wanted to pick up where someone left off and update and existing script…..

Bring back Sub-categories ?

Iamadam

Having all of those sub-categories was really ugly. We don't have enough scripts to warrant it.
How about Beta Scripts, Stable Scripts, Broken Scripts?

Dan Cardin

2011-03-04 07:07:57

+1 for Bebe and I'm not really sure that it matters what the graveyard is called. The only people that would care are the people that aren't updating their script. And If they update they'll either update and make a new thread, or update and request it moved. Just make an announcement that says to request it moved, or put that in the section description and you're done. Name is unimportant, but the fact that you have a section for workin scripts and outdated scripts is what should happen.

First scripts is kind of meh. Either its a short, like…powerminer or something and it probably wont get updated anyway and soon go to the graveyard, or it will actually be a useful script and not having the negative "first script" label will be good towards actually having people use it.

It's already broken down into sub categories, hence the icons, personally I think it looked great, but I can understand that it would be bulky without enough working scripts….

but there at least needs to be a way to search for each specific skill, hence the icon legend, searching and searching, where did it go ?

If you click on the icon it only displays scripts of that skill, is that what you mean?

Daniel

IMHO I was against this icon categorisation system from the very start. Sub forums are much better, IMO, regardless of the amount of scripts.

I think what he's getting at is that what if the skill you want to train is not in those first few initial threads listed in the Public Scripts section? There's no easy way to just click the icon if the icon doesn't exist for it to be clicked. Hence a legend, or, list-links/whatever.

A similar example is you know in the member list how there are links to sort by alphabetical characters (A, B, C, D, E, F, etc, etc)? There's none of that for the Public Scripts section (no links to sort by Mining, Woodcutting, Smithing, Fishing, etc).

I liked the categories of scripts… I think we should implement the categories again and add another section 'outdated scripts'. It's the easiest to navigate, and the subforums that are empty will enlighten our users to make more scripts!

It'd be better if these categories were more like tags where a thread could have more than one category.

Daniel, Yes, and Hobbit, Thank You ! :) and everyone else has made some good points as well….

I liked the sub-categories very much, but the icon legend works just as well, without the bulk…

soo, how about sub-categories for the "Script graveyard" :p, j/k…even if a script is outdated, chances are, there is still some useful relevant code in it than can be used later ?…..

Harry

The legends work on Graveyard scripts, you just have to change the subforum number in the URL.

Ok, here's a problem I see.

When Ref2 came out, it broke 99% of Reflection scripts due to the renaming of functions. Some of the time the script still worked previously, and renaming some functions will get the script to work again.

How should this be handled? They are technically broken, but technically not.

Moving them all would ensure the section is kept constant but would kill off another very large group of potentially working scripts.

Any ideas?

Post an announcement that all ref1 scripts not updated in *insert time frame here* will be moved to out dated section.

That should get the original writers or anyone else wanting to use the scripts to update them, I would think anyways.

That sounds good, and in the meantime just move them to the outdated section if someone reports that it doesn't work.

Obviously we don't want any scripts that don't compile. That just gives a bad impression for the new users.

Harry

2011-10-19 21:43:21

The only issue I see is it gives the impression of a dead site if there are like no scripts… but I guess failing to compile does the same? Except users can realize they are procedure changes instead of actual RS updates breaking it?

Coh3n

Kind of a lose-lose situation I guess. I would just make an announcement and wait a couple weeks, then move them if they're not updated.

Looks good, and yes 2 weeks should be plenty. May not be a bad idea to mention that if a script author isn't around, testing is welcome. If it's simple compiling errors, I don't see why one of us can't quickly fix it and replace the original post.

Harry

I see no problem with this, its open source right, there for anyone can do anything with the scripts here ? Also everyone knows who originally made the script as it says on the original post plus normally within the script.
I think anyone would be happy if someone updated their script so it works

Right, it would just be a staff member editing the original post, BUT I still think we could at least PM the author.

Uhm, who deleted my announcement in public scripts? And why was I not informed why?

Is the plan still active to move non-compiling scripts on the 31st, like I said in the now-deleted-for-some-reason announcement? If so, I would like a Reflection subforum made there where I can move the Reflection scripts that will work once Reflection is fixed, but won't be cluttering the main sections for the newbies. If that sounds good to the admins anyways…

Edit: it was nava2 I guess. Why'd he do that?..

You should have permissions to change it to an anouncement. I believe Anouncements are on top of all the sub sections.

E: NVM Anouncement go below the Sections

E2: Could probably make a copy in each subsection.

Never had that unless the anouncement had something related to the search I was running. Like I said though you could make a copy in each subforum, but this could get messy if we ever go back to the sigle section for scripts.

Make it say something about only reporting a script they personally have made or something, and to report issues into the actual script thread? It's a bit of a pain to see (well-intending) newbies reporting scripts because they did something wrong in setting it up.
